Huge statue of Helios built and positioned to greet ships at a harbor of Rhodes.
"Wow, Impressive! Look everybody at Rhodes, Lets go visit Rhodes, There is a huge statue of Helios at Rhodes." The fools all say.
Then an Earthquake...
The statue topples and crumbles...
In fear of offending Helios, Officials order that the statue remains are to be left alone and not to be reconstructed...
Like that to this day, Some fragments sold or stolen.

from what i have read that is not ture, the Colossus was built on the hill side near the Harbor, and after the earthquake the statue stayed in one place for allmost 1000 years untill the Arabs invaded to sold the metal for scrap. The Statue of Liberty was inspired bt the colosus.
