Spider expert Martin Nicholas travels to South America's Amazon in search of a spider known as the chicken-eating spider.

You believe that mother spider was about 10 inches across. How big are the biggest tarantulas?

I believe the record is 11.8 inches, held by the Goliath spider of Venezuela.

Is the chicken-eating spider a new species?

We don't know yet. I would like to get it properly identified. There are two or three other large black tarantulas that live in the area.

I have never heard of that spider...I would of definitely heard about it on the news or through NGC.

I doubt it's existance. There looks to be no proof.

Oh right because you haven't heard of it, it doesn't exist?
You can always trust the BBC when it comes to new discoveries in nature.
The Spider is real, whether it eats chickens or not is another matter but the locals claim it sneaks into their villiage and eats their chickens. Hence the word allegedly

Camel Spiders are actually arthopods or whatever. Might as well call them spiders though, frigging crazy looking.

Is there any truth to the old wive's tale that says that if you kill a spider, it will soon rain?

If so somebody must be killing alot of spiders where I live. It's been raining for 3 days and supposed to go on all week. laugh.gif

There are some seriously creepy pictures in here. I can feel them crawling on me. crying.gif

I think spiders are pretty cool, but definitely at a distance. If one gets on me, I usually freak out. A couple years ago I kept getting Wolf Spiders in my room. They'd crawl along my ceiling all the time. I heard that it was bad luck to kill them, so I always got my boyfriend to catch them and take them outside.

About a year before that I was home alone. I'd just made a sandwich and was walking back to my room to watch TV. I sat down and looked over at the table beside my bed to grab the TV remote and there's this huge brown spider sitting on it. I promptly threw my PB sandwich at him and ran.

I ended up going back in though to get him out of my room before he disappeared and I wouldn't know where he was. ph34r.gif I ended up scooting him out of a window with a very long piece of cardboard.

I know it's silly but I am deathly afraid of Daddy long legs. They absolutely terrify me. ( I think it's cause of a dream I had once) Other spiders I try to catch and release myself, if small, if they are big I have my boyfriend catch and release. I do admit some are so beautiful, when they are only in pics.
