Most of the time the size that they say on information is nowhere near the size that they animal can actually get. If anyone has seen a wolf spider, they know what I mean. If you look them up online, they say that they're about 2 inches or so (with legs), but at my grandparent's cabin there is a creek. The bank is very stony and a lot of spiders live in little holes. I have seen wolf spiders that are about 7 inches with legs and everything. These spiders are scary. The smaller ones can walk on water with some substance on the tips of their legs, and the bigger ones can swim very well. They jump pretty far, too. I remember running away from them as a kid.
All spiders freak me out at least a little bit. Orb weavers freak me out the most though...
Orb weavers get very big and they're very scary looking. At an aquarium in Boston (New England aquarium), there were some very large ones just hanging in front of you in a giant room. It was pretty cool.

Man that clock spider is crazy, I too am one of those people that doesn't kill spiders (anymore) I figure we're both on the same side and we hate bugs. If I happen to find one I try to let it outside now. I don't mind having them around sometimes (theres one in the downstairs shower, the one that no one uses, and I refuse to let one kill it)

If anyone can explain how a austrailian huntsman spider
got into my house in michigan, in the winter, I would feel
a lot better. I would swear on grannies grave that thats
what it was.
I saw "deep jungle" on PBS last night. This guy went
hunting for the "chicken eating spider" in Peru. Damn if
he didn't find one! It was quite large. I've seen tarantulas
in Ariz. get that big but this chicken eater had much
larger and more solid body. I couldn't believe it when
he picked it up though,

eeeeeewwwwww!!!!!!

The photo of the spider behind the clock and on the wall near the curtains reminds of the spiders they used in the movie Arachnaphobia. They were Spiders who breeded with a Triantula from Peru or Brazil someplace in that region.
The venom of these spiders are so deadly they could literally wipe out a small town in a number of a few days.
Scary thoughts... all I know is they crep me out and I wouldn't want to be near any of those.

You are very observant...it was the same spider used in the movie

I imagine because it was so easy to get that many specimens. Alot of huntsmen are social spiders, they live in a communal nest like ants or bees. I remember when i was little. My dad decided to knock down an old shed in our back yard. It was infested with a nest of Huntsmen, must have been at least a hundred of them that came scuttling out Huntsmen were also used in Lord of the Rings(Part 1, can't remember its title) But the bit where Frodo gets off the road to hide and those big icky spiders crawl on him. I know they were introduced(accidently) to New Zealand from Australia, and other native species live in South East Asia . So maybe they escaped to the US in cargo at one time or other

This spider lived in a flower bed at the side of our house through most of last summer. I thought she was quite beautiful (and yes she ate lots of earwigs!). You can't tell in the attached pic, but the yellow on her was very brilliant. She was also quite large for a garden variety spider, about 3 inches from leg tip to leg tip. There was a male with her for a time but he was a drab brownish colour.

Ewww! I live in Arizona and thankfully I have NEVER seen anything so nasty! The biggest and creepiest that we have are wolf spiders (and they do get big!), tarantula's (though I personally have never seen one hanging around) and a ton of black widow spiders. We also get quite a bit of brown recluse spiders....

WOW!!!!! Lot's of spider talk. Lest's see how much of it I can comment on.
The Goliath Bird Eating Spider is the largest living spider in the world. The John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago Illinois USA has one. I'm glad it's on the other side of the glass. I have a healthy respect for spiders. I tolerate the smaller ones so they can take care of bugs. And I'll tolerate the bigger ones from a distance or through glass.
The spiders from Arachnophobia were imported from New Zealand for the movie. Unfortunately, New Zealand wouldn't let them be shipped back. That speacies is supposed to be very poisonous but very docile. And a community spider. If one kills something big enough, it will share it with others. Which is kind of creepy in and of itself.
The largest land arthropods are spiders, but many species of crab get FAR larger than spiders. They have the advantage that the water holds up their body weight. One of the problems of arthropods is that there is a limit to how big they can get. It's one of the disadvantages of an exoskeleton. There's only so big it can get and still have room for everything it needs inside.
The movie I want to see but haven't gotten the courage to yet is Eight-Legged freaks. Apparently, they filmed a bunch of real spiders before having the computer animate the giant ones.
BTW Driders are a creation of Dungeons & Dragons. They have no precedent in any mythology that I am familiar with although the Drow are based on the Svartheim (?) of Norse mythology.

I wonder if anyone could tell me how intelligent spiders are? I keep spiders in my room to let them take care of all the flies I get coming into my house, and I mess about with the spiders all the time. I always wonder if they are aware of what around them, and if they learn things. So do they? Or do they just act on their instincts? And does anyone know the average lifespan of a house spider?

Dude you serieusly dont wanna keep spider alive in your house, they plant like hunderds of eggs a day. And before you know it your house is full of spiders, and you'll have to call the insectman to take care of them. And after that you will receive a bill of about $300 for clearing the whole house.

This is weird timing for me to find this topic... there at least four spiders in my bedroom last night, I saw the first two while lying in bed and listening to the radio, so I got up, got an empty water bottle, captured them both one by one and let them go in the backyard (I don't kill spiders, spread the love, people) then I go to sleep and wake up this morning to find two more on the cieling, also catch and release. Personally I love spiders, they are pretty cool looking and, yes, I've been bitten a couple times, but it was never bad enough to make me stop liking the little dudes, and if the Native Americans were right and they are actually very wise and powerful spiritual beings, I want to be on their good side.

I've never liked spiders, but I don't get really afraid unless they get too close. I used to live in a room that I shared with quite a lot of spiders, so I guess I kinda got used to them after a while. I killed them as soon as I saw them, but their numbers never seemed to decrease...
One night, when I was just about to fall asleep, I heard a faint rasping sound, and when I opened my eyes I saw something dark on the wall right in front of me. I turned the light on and voilą, there was a big friggin spider sitting two decimeters from my face!

After that I always had a lamp turned on while I slept...

The kind of spider I had in my room, only slightly larger than life.

Brazilian Wandering Spider (Phoneutria fera). These spiders are extremely fast, extremely venomous, and extremely aggressive and are ranked among the most venomous spiders known to man. In fact, the Brazilian Wandering Spider is the most venomous spider in the New World! In South America, these true spiders are commonly encountered in peoples' homes, supposedly hiding in peoples' shoes, hats, and other clothes. It does not remain on a web, rather, it wanders the forest floor, which is how it got its name. The Brazilian Wandering Spider has another name - the Banana Spider and it was given this name because there have been cases where these spiders unintentionally appeared on banana boats heading for the United States.
