Full Version: Some of my wood carvings

Ninor
Here's a few pics of some of my wood carvings/sculptures. They're all designed and carved by me using mostly hand gouges. I sometimes do the fine detail and 'clean up' work with a rotary power tool and bits. They're all made from local wood that I've either bought from mills where I live or they were found already cut down/fallen down in the forests where I live. I try to air dry them all in my garage for a few years before carving them.

The 'femaleWoodSpirit' is made from Eastern White cedar and sealed with a clear varnish. The one called 'MyWoodSpirit' (the one with the open mouth) is made from Eastern White Pine and is also sealed with a clear varnish. The 'MoustacheWoodSpirit3' (the one with the closed mouth and prominent moustache) is cut from the same Eastern White Pine as the 'MyWoodSpirit' one and is also finished with a clear varnish. The 'IndianHead' is also Eastern White Pine but is finished with a mahogany resin stain instead of a clear varnish. The 'The Mask1' piece is made out of Eastern White Pine also but finished with an Antique Walnut resin stain. Last but not least, the 'PolarBearCub1' is an 'in the round' sculpture (it's carved in 3D) and is made out of Eastern White Pine finished with a clear varnish.

Hope you enjoy! original.gif

w00t.gif That is truly amazing....

How long does it take you to carve one of those?

I like the 5th one best...kinda looks like a bird? Although they are all magnificent...I wouldn't mind having one of those in my house.

On average, the relief ones take around 30 to 40 hours and the 3D (in the round) ones can take up to three or four times that, depending on the size.

That one is based on a Papua New Guinea 'Good Luck' tribal mask.

AWESOME. I love the mask - or the good luck symbol as you said. How did you learn how do those, trial and error, did you get lessons, or what?
Loaded_Revolver
Now Ninor needs to do a carving of Silent Bob.

And that one carving might be good luck, but it looks like my brother and he is NOT good luck, he's more like the spawn of Lucifer.

Those are freakin' awesome, for sure.

VERY well done. Really makes me want to pick up more art again, and you know I probably will, unfortuneatly art can be EXPENSIVE -- although there should be NO price to make art.

Where can you get a proper widdling knife, and how much do they cost? I am currently making myself a staff, and so far I've sanded, slightly shaped, and cleaned the wood Im using which I got off a beavers damn while I was in the swamps near my friend's house , and my ultimate goal is to carve designs and figures into it. I would really appreciate the help of a master like you.

Those are very nice. I have a bit of background in woodwork, but mines in furniture - i'll try and get a pic of one of the things i've made. I've never tried carving. Very, very nice work thumbsup.gif
