X/1999 was pretty good. The movie was kind of confusing but they had a lot of crap to shove into just a few hours. CLAMP did amazing animation and artwork on this one.

Ahh I really dig Inuyasha, so does my 11 year old son.

I think the story is really cool. Id love to download the originals and movies. Anyone watch Adult Swim on cartoon network. WolvesRain is pretty interesting also, is that Japanese? My son really likes Case Closed too. Interesting but not my cup of tea.
What can I say, I like a good anime.

PS Super Milk-Chan is alright too.. LMAO!

1. What was his obsession with blowing up everything and meeting akira.
2. What was with that crappy ending!? - reminded me of 2001 Space Oddesy
And what i didn't like about it, the film is called Akira and we only see him for about 1min. I wanted this huge Dragon Ball Z type battle and when the film was over your like 'What the hell just happened'

OK first point
This was Probably the first time that the west in general had seen anything like this. This was far beyond the Kid Cartoons most had seen before. The story was complex with an adult theme. Not to mention the fact that it is Beautifully animated and well ahead of it's time.Just look at the opening scene of the bike chase through Neo Tokyo.A night scene!!!! most animation studios avoided these if possible as due to the muted colour the shadows etc they are very hard to animate and get right.
BTW think "Akira" broke the top 20 in offical greatest cartoons of all time. The only Anime feature to rate higher was "Spirited Away"
2) I'll assume you mean Tetsuo. He blow things up because he was in possesion of powers he did not fully understand or was able to control.Akira was calling to Him to release Him(Akira) hence the obsession
3) The final Scene does seem to Mirror the last scenes of 2001.This is because both Characters(Dave Bowman,Tetsuo) are evolving beyond being Human and the visuals are supposed to reflect this transition

You haven't watched a lot of anime then

Most of my collection doesn't have the slightest amount of gore and nothing about saving the world. A lot of Clamp stories do revolve around saving the world like X, RG Veda and CCS, but to be fair on half of them like CCS, there cutsy not violent. Other Clamp animes like Angelic Layer are more about Teenage Lovelife, daughter finds long lost mother and some action thrown in. Clamp also have done a lot of romance animes. Actually give me a second and I'll get a list.

In a recent interview posted on Mecha Anime HQ, Bandai's Jerry Chu announced his companies (US) acquisition of Gundam SEED: Destiny.
The interview also touches on the precarious state of the US anime industry; commenting that after booming over recent years, the US has been flooded with too many anime releases to the point where "... many companies run a risk of collapse if they continue to release at breakneck speed".
This is of particular interest when stopping to consider that the UK anime industry is currently going through a similar state of 'release schedule growth'. You have to wonder, will the British market eventually suffer from the same problems of over-crowded anime shelves?

I find japanese anime very accurate in expressing the supernatural unlike marvel comics cartoon. For example there is less outer tight fitting underwears and blind rage but more focused on human nature, love and nature. Also, their potrayals of ET is also astounding and elaborative, creative and authentic-----awesome.
Examples are 'blue submarine 5', 'ninja scroll', 'macross plus', 'spirit' and many more.

Perhaps I don't hate anime, as much as I dislike american fangirls/fanboys. They are perhaps the most annoying people I have ever encountered... not to be stereotyping or anything..
I think Maddox defines my reason for disliking hardcore anime fans pretty well:
QUOTE
1. The "I wish I was Japanese" anime nerd:
Everyone knows someone like this. They refer to themselves as "otaku" and they embrace everything Japanese, not necessarily because it's something unique or interesting, but because it's Japanese. They wear clothing with Japanese or Chinese characters on it that translate to English phrases like "good will" or "long life." They wouldn't be able to get away with wearing a shirt that said "long life" in English because it would just look stupid, but as soon as it's translated into kanji it suddenly becomes cool and mysterious? Please. Since they'll sooner die than admit that their fascination with everything Japanese is a sham, you'll occasionally sense how uneasy they become when confronted with something Japanese that's so lame and obviously for little girls that they almost start to back off from the mountain of stupid they've climbed up on. Almost.
Quoted from the Best Page in the UniverseSeriously, that explains it all. Not to be blatantly hurtful, but I think that really explains it all.

Yes, I agree. Akira the comic was at least easier to understand, that movie didn't do the books any justice I don't think... And after about two hours of it, I needed a really good fight scene instead of THAT ending.

You'd have trouble not getting it...they can't go an episode without delivering the message seven or eight times

While you are right Gundam Wing was trying to deliver a deep, and heartfelt anti-war message (something about the nature of man I suppose), there are many, many animes that managed to say the same thing, only more artfully...
It is possibly, of course, that it's simply the dub that was crap.

I kind of liked Gundam myself. I thought it was neat in a cheesy sort of way. There's something about watching giant Japanese war robots pummel each other that appeals to me. I also like the old-school Mobile Suit Gundam but I can't find it anywhere around here. The Ghost in the Shell movies and subsequent series are, far and away, my favorite anime. I just picked up Innocence on DVD, which means a lot for me because it's only the third DVD I've ever bought in my life.

I have just watched Macross Zero. The story is about the reapperance of the Birdman in the Mayan culture, who are the Sea People originally. It is strikingly similar to Erich Don Daniken's God were astronauts.
One instance is that the prehistoric Mayans possessed highly advance technolgy, much more than our modern's. And it potrays Et intelligence as a form of godliness.
One aspect is that Japanaese often mix supernatural with science so as to make it believable and realistic. For example there are numerous supernatural abilities, together and supplemented with science in anime, quite different from western animations. In fact, very different.

GXT is planned to go live in Italy on the 1st of May, with the CEO for Jetix Europe quoted as saying "Once we've seen how successful it is in Italy then we will make a decision as to whether or not to bring it to the UK." My favorite anime is My HiME. The first 16 episodes and the last one are funny, but almost every episode from 17-25 made me cry. My HiME is about girls with magic powers called HiMEs, but don't think it will be like a typical magical girl anime. There are 12 HiMEs, each with their own monster called a Child, and no, they aren't cute mascots. If their Child is killed, by monsters called Orphans or by another HiME, the person they love the most dies. There's a big plot twist at the end of episode 16 which makes the episodes from 17-25 tearjerkers. I'd recommend this anime to anyone that loves a great story and cool monsters.
BTW, the last screencap is from episode 17. Its a pretty good example of what happens when you piss a magical girl that controls a fire breathing monster off.
