Anime UK News forum user Charter_Mage has noticed that IMDB are listing a number of (as yet unconfirmed) English dub actors for the eagerly awaited ninja anime series Naruto.

Amongst the cast, Rachael Lillis (Misty from Pokemon) is down as playing Sakura, Mark Hildreth (Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing) as playing Sasuke, Steven Jay Blum (Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop) as Kakashi and Johnny Yong Bosch (Vash from Trigun) will be playing the title character Naruto.

All star cast there. Although I hope Rachael Lillis does her Utena acting and not her Misty acting.

Anime Taking Some Punches
Author: CHRIS TRIBBEY

ANAHEIM, Calif. — If the thousands of fans at the recent Anime Expo here looked like they were dragging their feet toward the end, there are a few hundred reasons why.

More than 100 events, from manga and DVD industry panels, to art shows and dance lessons, to video games and voice acting classes, were crammed into four days. And that doesn’t include the screening of more than 200 anime movies and series, the early morning dance party, the 24-hour manga library or the convention floor where more than 100 booths were set up, vying for the consumer dollar.

Organized by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation, the Anime Expo is the largest anime U.S. trade show, the hotbed of new license announcements and the place to be seen if you’re an anime Cosplayer (think of Halloween dress-up, every day of the year). In its 14th year, the expo attracted a record paid crowd of nearly 28,000 to the Anaheim Convention Center, according to show organizers. In the words of SPJA convention chair Darold Higa, “We have built an anime city.”

Challenges to Continued Growth
While it’s a great time to be an anime fan — a dozen new titles to choose from each Tuesday, with a growing presence of the genre on TV — industry representatives are feeling the pressures of an industry that’s seen tremendous growth the past few years but is starting to level off.

Every year since 2001, more than 30 new titles were announced for DVD by the studios at Anime Expo. In 2005, about half that number of new anime titles were announced. ADV Films has constantly announced a dozen new titles at the expo, until this year, when it announced just one. According to the weekly DVD Release Report, 2004 was the first year fewer anime DVDs were released into the market compared to the year before. This year, only powerhouse Geneon is on target to release more titles than it did last year.

“The marketplace is saturated,” said David Williams, DVD producer with ADV Films. “We don’t want to flood the marketplace and put out more anime than the fans can buy. The retailers just can’t shelve it all. We need to go back and rethink our release schedule.”

In addition to oversaturation, other issues weigh on the minds of industry representatives: Bootlegs are too easy to get via the Internet, and the price to license Japanese anime has ballooned.

Anime DVDs are competing with all things mainstream, and more than one company rep said they’ve received far too many returns from retailers this year. ADV Films laid off dozens of employees earlier this year, and media giant Navarre saw its stock plummet after purchasing Funimation, and just last week lost its CFO, who resigned.

“It’s a crazy, crazy time in the anime industry,” said Jerry Chu, marketing manager for Bandai Entertainment. “For what it is, it’s still a niche market.”

In fact, anime DVDs account for less than 7 percent of the releases in the market since the format’s inception, according to The DVD Release Report.

The price to license even ‘B-’ and ‘C’-list titles is proving too prohibitive for some. Titles that screened in theaters — Geneon’s Appleseed and Dreamworks’ Innocence stand out — and big-name works — Manga and Bandai’s “Ghost in the Shell” TV series and anything done by director Hayao Miyazaki — sell well. But lesser-known works aren’t flying off store shelves like they once did, or at least not well enough for suppliers to make a profit.

“A title that cost $2,500 an episode a couple years ago would now cost $20,000 or $25,000 an episode,” said one industry head. That’s pricing some companies out of the domestic anime business.

“Now, when it gets to be a bidding war for a title, we can’t compete,” said Tokyopop spokesman Matt Nixon.

“The pie wasn’t as big as we thought it was,” said Funimation senior brand manager Lance Heiskell. “The more the price per episode goes up, the more you need to make to break even. Add on to that the competition for shelf space, and now you have to be a little more careful [with what you license].”

Quality over quantity was a recurring theme among industry representatives.

Piracy An Issue
Even when companies land a hot property, studios find themselves dealing with Internet piracy.

“You can get an episode of a show that aired in Japan, subtitled, on BitTorrent two days after it airs,” said Shawne Kleckner, CEO and president of The Right Stuf International. “Now, when I release the DVD, how am I supposed to sell it?”

The companies are finding ways to fight bootlegs by offering items with DVDs you can’t download. English dubs, high-quality script books, action figurines, DVD extras beyond previews, T-shirts, soundtracks and art boxes that fit the entire collection of a TV series are now almost expected items with any ‘A’-list anime title.

Perhaps the biggest problem anime companies are facing is the relative stagnant growth of the fan base. The genre is waiting for another “Pokémon” to reel in more American fans beyond those already hooked.

“We need to reach out to more than just these core fans,” Bandai’s Chu said. “A lot of companies aren’t doing that right now.”

Nobody at Anime Expo predicted the demise of the domestic anime industry. But industry executives did predict more than one company will bow out of the business.

“Anime as a genre will be around; it’s not going anywhere,” Kleckner said, gesturing at the thousands of fans at the convention. “But in the next year or two, there will be some struggles.”

Anime UK News forum user GrantM has noticed that ADV UK recently had the trailer of "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu" (the comedy spin-off from the popular mecha action series Full Metal Panic!) cleared by the BBFC (with a 12 certificate), seemingly confirming ADV's tentative plans to release the 17-episode series in the UK.

It should be remembered though that ADV UK also had the Gantz trailer certified by the BBFC during last winter, only for it to be later snapped up by MVM instead, so this is by no means an official confirmation.

According to Animetion on the 3rd August The Times newspaper reported that the British Internet Broadcasting company (BiBc), is currently discussing with Optimum Releasing, the possibility of legal film downloads to your PC. This would be the first ever way of downloading mainstream films to your PC for half the cost of a DvD.

Its worth baring in mind that Optimum Releasing's "Optimum Asia" label has several anime films in its library such as Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and more recently BareFoot Gen. So we could see anime films available for download eventually.

It is however unlikely this service will begin for at least 6 months.

QUOTE
The Japan External Trade Organization(JETRO) has released its June 2005 report on the state of Japan's animation industry. The gist of the report is that although more animation is being produced in Japan than ever before, industry profits are in decline. Select highlights from the report are:

Anime film sales declined by 10.4% between 2002 and 2003, going from 213.5 billion yen in 2002 down to 191.2 billion yen in 2003.

Japanese box office revenue for theatrical anime films has decreased since 2001, going from 53.3 billion yen in 2001 down to 33.7 billion yen in 2003.

Anime DVD and video sales decreased by 5.5% in Japan from 2003 to 2004.

Most TV series do not recoup their production costs through TV broadcast. Studios rely on other revenue sources such as DVD sales, licensing, and merchandising to earn profit.

Employees in many smaller animation studios are employed on a short-term, as needed basis and do not live with a guaranteed stable income. However, some talented, high profile anime artists earn $90,000 or more annually.

A typical 30-minute TV episode costs 10 million yen to produce; however, some cost as little as 5 million yen.

The amount of anime made for TV broadcast in Japan continues to increase annually. In 2002 there were 2,748 anime TV episodes broadcast. That number increased to 2,850 in 2003.

As of 2004, Japan produces 60% of the world's television animation.

80% of the animation DVDs purchased in Japan are native Japanese produced animation videos.

new manga first released in Japan this past July 26th, is creating controversy within Japan and tense international relationships between Japan and Korea. "Kenkanryu," the manga whose title translates directly as "Hating Things South Korean," has become a best selling manga with 100,000 copies in print in less than two months of release. The manga illustrates a strong Japanese nationalistic, anti-Korean sentiment. The manga was released at the current height of a new Japanese trend of fascination with Korean television programs and actors. Several Japanese publishers refused to publish "Kenkanryu" out of fear of its potential for controversy. And South Korea's three largest newspapers have published editorials condemning the manga.

ADV UK news

A new anime series will be starting every month for the first six months of 2006. These new series are Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! (January), Elfen Lied (February), Madlax (March) along with the currently unscheduled Cromartie High School, Gilgamesh and Area 88 TV.
An ADV UK fanclub and magazine is planned; called "Anime ADVocates", membership will include a magazine and free promo DVD (containing anime episodes).
ADV are looking at the possibility of bringing ADV Manga to the UK.
Despite trying hard, no ADV titles are scheduled to be aired on British TV.
The possibility of ADV bringing DVD art boxes to the UK is still an issue of cost, not helped by high street shops being reluctant to stock them. However, they are looking at selling boxes in the UK directly by mail order.

BEEZ news

No new titles have been confirmed, though Beez stated a strong interest in bringing Panda Z, Stratos 4 Advance and Scrapped Princess to the UK.

They are waiting to see how successful the UK release of Crest of the Stars (currently unscheduled) is before making a decision on Banner of the Stars and Banner of the Stars 2.

Beez are planning DVD art-boxes for a lot of their releases (no specific titles confirmed).

The UK release of Wolf's Rain will feature UK-exclusive limited edition versions.

Beez's panel also illustrated their buisness priorites; specifically working towards TV in Europe and releasing more anime soundtracks as well as syncronising the UK with the French industry (in terms of DVD releases).

Tokyopop UK news

It is probable that Tokyopop UK will start releasing (through a different distributor) Tokyopop US' anime series (a line-up that includes Great Teacher Onizuka aka GTO, Initial D and Rave Master) in the UK next year (selection based on whatever anime has been popular in the US).

Their manga releases have been doing really well at the smaller high street chain stores (like Borders) and are set to make an impact at the likes of Waterstones and WH Smiths in the future.

TokyoPop UK's best seller is "Battle Royale, followed closely by Chobits, Fruits Basket and Love Hina". As with their probable anime releases, TokyoPop UK choose manga series based on their success in the US.
