Beez (Bandai Europe) have sent us their tentative UK release plans for much of 2005, confirming several anime series (and movies!) that many UK fans had been wondering about. These release plans are listed below.
Midori Days from April 2005

S-CRY-ed from April 2005

Witch Hunter Robin from April 2005

Stratos 4 from April 2005

Mobile Suit Gundam the movies from May 2005

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED from June 2005

Planetes from September 2005

Wolf’s Rain from October 2005
Along side their current Cowboy Bebop releases, I'm sure we can agree that 2005 just got a whole lot better for UK anime fans.

Edit: According to posts at the AnimeOnDVD forums, DVD art boxes are being planned for all of these releases except the Gundam movies. Crest of the Stars and Yukikaze are also being planned for a UK release by Beez, but not officially confirmed as yet.

The Yomiuri Newspaper has reported that Studio Ghibli will separate from parent company Tokuma Shoten by the end of March. The newly independent Studio Ghibli will be managed by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata. Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 as a subsidiary of Tokuma Shoten, but was absorbed into Tokuma Shoten in 1997 to subsidize the ailing publisher. Tokuma has since restructured and no longer needs to rely on profits generated by Ghibli.

While you should consider this firmly in the realms of rumour, there have been rumblings that Joel Silver, producer of The Matrix films, is talking to Gonzo about a possible live-action adaptation of Last Exile.

Also, Studio4°C are said to be planning a new anime "anthology called Genius Party featuring many Animatrix alumni like Koji Morimoto, Shinichiro Watanabe, and Mahiro Maeda." Studio4°C were behind previous big budget anime anthologies including Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories.

All of these rumours have been squirming from the Tokyo International Anime Fair that was recently held in Hollywood.

As announced by ICv2 today, Geneon have officially acquired Girls Bravo and Melody of Oblivion for release in the US.

The much loved anime director Hayao Miyazaki has been making his fair share of headlines lately, first off- he is set to be honoured by the Venice Film Festival in the summer with the 'Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement' award.

Also, during the announcements for this award, it was revealed that Miyazaki is ".. planning three new films." While it shouldn't be taken for granted that he is indeed directing these new films, many will consider this great news none the less.

Direct Market Manga Sales Statistics for January Revealed
While manga sales overwhelmingly dominate graphic novel sales in mainstream American bookstores, their popularity in the American comic book retail market is significantly lower. ICv2 News has published the list of estimated best selling graphic novels to comic book and specialty retailers for January 2005. The Samurai Executioner volume 3 translated manga was the best selling book of the month. Ghost in the Shell 2 and Berserk volume 6 were the only other manga titles in the top 10.

Gonzo Digimation Holdings has revealed its fiscal year's financial figures including the percentage of its profits that come from international sales. For its fiscal year ending next month, Gonzo anticipates total earnings for the year to be approximately 6.8 billion yen (US $65 million). 449 million yen (US $4 million) of that total is profit. 8.2% of the company's revenue comes from American sales. 1.7% of Gonzo's revenue comes from European sales. .7% of the company's revenue comes from Oceaniac and Asian sales outside of Japan.

54% of Gonzo's business consists of creating animation. 43% of the company's business consists of licensing and property rights management. Gonzo's most profitable productions and co-productions of the past year have been Samurai 7, Gantz, Bakuretsu Tenshi, Sunabozu and Transformer: Galaxy Force.

Anyone into anime?

I find japanese anime very accurate in expressing the supernatural unlike marvel comics cartoon. For example there is less outer tight fitting underwears and blind rage but more focused on human nature, love and nature. Also, their potrayals of ET is also astounding and elaborative, creative and authentic-----awesome.

Examples are 'blue submarine 5', 'ninja scroll', 'macross plus', 'spirit' and many more.

First let me say what I liked-FLCL, Dragonball, (before the Majin Buu Saga), Evangelion, and Akira. thumbsup.gif

Ones I cannot stand:Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragonball GT, and Inuyasha. disgust.gif

All the rest fall into a spectrum between the good and the bad. Regardless of that however, most animes have one major problem.. just aweful storylines/execution of their storylines. Dragonball has HUGE gaps of time when they could be fighting nonstop... Inuyasha has pointless dialogue, and A lot of Anime's complicate themselves to the point of me saying "WTF am I looking at?" outloud. laugh.gif

I think all of anime's shortcomings are based on them trying to integrate japanese culture into the story,.. which is pointless and painful to watch. Just my opinion. rolleyes.gif

Eh?..... considering its Japanese, of course Japanese culture is going to be present. I mean no offense, but I doubt their going to say, 'We're making an anime... we're Japanese, our main audience is Japanese, and this is Japan.... but hell lets not put any Japanese culture into it cause some westerners might feel put off'.
