These are all the anime's I have either in full or part (quite a few I only have a few episodes from a single Volume or a Newtype CD). I must admit, I actually haven't gotten around to watching most. I'm currently woirking through Miami Guns which I bought a while ago, but I've got stuff on the shelf like Vol 6 of Princess Miyu which I refuse to watch because of the angst ending.

I've been watching and collecting for at least 7 years now, and barring Star Trek, WW2 documentaries and Animal Planet its really the only television I'll watch. Sad thing... there are people out there who've watched much, much more than me.
Talon
While I’ve got dozens of titles I think are utter fantastic such as Cardcaptor Sakura, Magical Project S, Utena etc I feel a lot of what I could recommend are really just down to taste, however the following series are absolute gold and you should all go watch them….now;

There are also a lot of bad and pretty boring series I’ve seen like Rave Master and Blue Gender, but the following are a list of series which are so terrible you should all do yourself a favour and aviod them like the plague… although I do know several weird individuals who love them;

Well its pretty much split between my DVD collection and my DL collection (although I only DL whats only available in Japan, I believe any true anime fan will by western released titles simply to stop the western anime industry going down the toilet).

So thats about 600 DVDs, all of which I've watched except for Miyu Vol.6, Munto 2, Mouse Vol 1 and 2, Sherphim Call, Maze (all volumes), Amazing Nurse Nanako (all volumes), Miyuki Chan in Wonder Land, Please Teacher (all volumes), Steel Angel Kurumi (all volumes), and Metal Angel Marie (which I bought for £1 on VHS years ago and never got around to watching).
And to be fair, most of those I haven't watched because they're from my latest order from the US and still somewhere over the Atlantic.

Any titles on that list which are Japanese only titles are on my harddrive, and I've only made my way through 20% of them at most because I DL about 10 episodes a day but can't watch that many.

Btw, anyone in the UK who really wants to increase their anime collection fast, http://www.caimanzone.co.uk/ is fantastic, they sell anime DVD for as little as £1! Most of their DVDs don't break £10. And the series box sets are cheap as well - I bought the entire Kaliedo Star series 1 for £19 (one of the greatest series I've ever seen!) and got all 52 eps of Steel Angel Karumi for only £21!

Unfortunately for the US anime fans, http://www.caiman.com/Caiman/index_zone.htm doesn't seem to be so cheap (Munto is £6.87/$12 on CZ.uk but £10/$19.98 on CZ.usa wacko.gif ), but still might be worth a check.
Talon
Ok, I just watched Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland/Mirrorland, it was weird wacko.gif but cute. Pity it was only 25 minutes long.

I took my copy of please teacher round to a friend's today and watched the lot. It was actually quite good, despite me eating to much garlic & herb dip and wanting to hurl for the last few eps.

QUOTE

I've never really liked Akira. It seems to be considered the 'ulimate anime' by most fans, but I just never got into it, probably because I prefer cuter, light hearted titles like Pretty Sammy.

Oh, I also got Tenchi Muyo series 3 Vol 1 in the other day... it was weird.... spent most of the time introducing an entirely new set of characters.
Talon
Ok, I'm pissed now. Although I have every intention of buying it when it comes out on DVD, I DLed the English language version of episode 1 of Negima to confront two fears.

1. The voice actors. As fears, most of them do not match the characters.

2. Fear two, the main characters nationality. Negi, the main character is from Wales... that’s WALES. The country of WALES!!! However the Japanese version, although saying he was from Wales, became obsessed with saying he was 'an Englishman'. Wales is not England. It’s not part of England. A Welshman is not the same as an Englishman.
I hoped the US version might have cleared this, but given the lack of knowledge shown by a lot of Americans I know in relation to north-western European geography I had my doubts (bloody CNN couldn't even in a report about Scotland, place us in the right part of the planet a few years... and this is a major news channel that couldn't be bothered checking an atlas before falsely claiming we were Scandinavian... what hope should I have held for a dubbing company).
Outrageously, ADV decided to go even worse. Not only did they give the Welsh character an English accent, they decided to have him say he was from 'Wales, England', therefore telling all the viewers that Wales was part of England (a complete lie). It’s the equivalent of someone saying, "I'm from the US province in Mexico"
Personally I find the ignorance shown by this media outlet not just pathetic, but also insulting.

I do intend to make a complaint to ADVs public relations division when I gain access to the legal copy of the episode.

Wow, that is bad. I knew that Wales is not in England, so that proves that not all Americans are geographically ignorant. However, using 'English' and 'British' interchangably is much more common over here.

QUOTE

Actually it's more like saying you're a Mexican because you live in New Mexico, but I get the idea. I think the confusion is mainly because Wales is part of the UK, and when Americans think of the UK they think of England. Therefore, they think Wales is part of England. blink.gif

Well it shouldn’t, it only propagates a lie and bad geography. England makes up a third if the British Isles, not 100%.

QUOTE

I don't see how, given that Wales does not have the world England in its name. If you want it could be like claiming Arizona if part of California since they are both US states and next to each other, but my example of claiming one country is part of its neighbour is just as valid (in fact its probably more valid given that the US states overall do see their country as the US, while the Welsh are a completely different country from England and see themselves as such).

I think the confusion is mainly because Wales is part of the UK, and when Americans think of the UK they think of England. Therefore, they think Wales is part of England.

Ignorance of geography might be an excuse for the average American, but not for a media outlet. If ADV took responsibility to dub a show which had a Welsh character, it had the responsibility not make up utterly ridiculous claims about the country.

oh well, I doubt many people care hmm.gif

Finished watching Tsukihime a couple of days ago. The story line is pretty slow, but it helps build a bit of mysticism of the characters. from the tohno family secret, to Ciel's mysterious appearence.

I did a little summery on the other anime thread, but I'll repost it;

It is about Shiki Tohno, the main character the anime follows, who has "Mystic Eyes of Death Perception" inwhich lets him see threads that connect everything, and if cut it destroys whatever he has cut. he was given special glasses, by a woman called "sorceress", that made him unable to see those lines - preventing the 'curse' from working, which he has worn for for 8 years.. He later meets a "true ancestor", an original vampire kept in nature, called Arcueid Brunested. She is out to destroy dead Apostles, the result of when a true ancestor drinks from a human. She is after the Apostle leader, Nemo Chaos which ranks as one of her most powerful foes. She forces Shiki to become her shield, due to him killing her which has left her weakend, a memory he has no recolection of, though Arcueid fills in with violent scenes. The story unfolds at a slow pace, with the unraveling of shiki's memory, Arcueid's sudden want to live her life and the Tohno household secret.

It's a short anime and a bit slow paced, yet I enjoyed it and its mysterious unravelings.

It's a good watch, if you are patient enough to sit through the slow area's of the anime.

A fellow board member PMed me and asked for info on romantic anime titles avialable. Unfortunately my experience of romantic anime is limited to shoujo-ai anime (Maria-sama ga Miteru, Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~, Strawberry Panic etc) or animes which have romantic sub-stories but themselves are not romantic animes (e.g. Mai Hime, Dai-Guard, Chobbits, Angelic Layer etc).

Here’s a few of the titles that I would say could as ‘romantic titles’ but most are not serious at it, they are comic. Just does anyone else have any recommendations for a ‘romantic anime’?

Princess Mononoki is epic fantasy movie which is made by the same buy as Howl's castle. It’s darker though, but deals with the adventures of a young warrior and a human girl raised by wolves trying to save a forest from industry. They two develop romantic feelings.

Fushigi Yugi is a shoujo anime series I've never seen most of which dealt with higher schoolers going to another world, and dealt with romance... but I've only saw the last third and payed little attention to it.

Escaflowne is a fantasy anime which has a high school girl caught in a war in another dimension and falls for a prince... two in fact.

Nana is an insanely popular anime at the moment in Japan. It follows the lives of two girls called Nana who move to Tokyo to make something of their lives. Both have ups and downs in their relationships with various guys. I would say it’s a drama story with romance arcs.

Paradise Kiss is a romantic anime I’ve heard of, but I’ve never seen, so I don’t know anything about it.

Revolutionary Girl Utena has a lot of romance, it’s about a tomboy who has sword fights to protect the 'rose bride' against other 'duellists' who wish to control her. So its action, comedy, with romantic as well. However it all depends on how open minded you are since although Utena falls in love with two guys throughout the series, in the end she falls in love with the rose bride herself, and goes off with her.

Fatestay Night deals with romantic elements between the main characters… but its an action anime first and foremost.

True Love Story and First Kiss Story are both animes dealing purely with the development of relationships, but they are both only a few eps long.

Love Hina is an anime about a guy who moves into an all girl's dorm and falls in love with a resident. The show is however a comedy, and although the relationship is a main focus, it’s treated in a comic way most of the times rather than a serious love drama.

Hand Maid May, Mahromatic and Please Teacher are similar to Lone Hina. Brightly coloured comedy animes which are dominated by the theme of two people attracted to each other. In HMM's case its a nerd and a robot maid; in Mahromatic its the exact same (only Mahromatic is 'echhi' i.e. has nudity); and in Please Teacher is a student and his alien teacher… the relationship is actually very well developed though.

Ah my goddess is a huge romantic anime series, again though its comedy, and light hearted romance rather than serious; dealing with a average guy who's dating a... well goddess

Again, Tenchi is another romantic anime series, but again its comedy insanity. Its a average guy who gets 7 alien girls to live with him, who fight over him.

Kannon is a more serious anime dealing with a guy trying to find his feels for different girls. It deals with him meeting a girl every ep, and sorting out a problem she has, and then thinking about if he loves her or not. In the end he finally chooses the girl he likes most.

Shuffle is similar to Kannon, only more fantasy since most of the girls are from a parallel dimension. Also in Shuffle although it ends happily, it gets very angst at the end with several girls wanting him and dealing with their own mounting frustration of not being picked and jealousy of the others.

The Crest of Stars series is a sci-fi anime which deals with the growing romantic relationship between a human and a girl from a race of alien invaders.

Ouran High School is a comedy about a straight girl who dresses as a guy to flirt with girls to pay off a debt to a male school club that spends its entire time flirting with girls. However there is obviously a relationship building between the girl and the club’s leader. But it is a comedy first and foremost.

Anyone got any others? (I’m assuming the member is only wanting girl/guy relationships)

Edit:

Ichigo 100% is another 'harem' comedy romantic anime, which I would say was a 'romantic anime'. And Baby Love is also a comedy romantic anime, although I can't remember much about it.

Oh Macross Plus is a movie based in the future, and deals with three friends, 2 males in the miltary and one female who is a manager for a AI opera singer. The 2 guys have a rivalry going over the girl. It suddenly came to mind. The movie is actually quite epic.

ADV is going through financial trouble at the moment because of all these low-life theives who DL they're anime rather than buy it. So its cut back on the titles its releasing and not as able to bid as much, so Funimation won the rights for Second Raid. The Nikkei Business newspaper has published a lengthy Japanese language article analysing the current condition of Japan's anime industry. The article cites Studio Ghibli's Gedo Senki as a possible example of anime from newer generations of Japanese animators that aren't able to compare with the appeal and quality of works by veteran Japanese animators. While Gedo Senki has consistently topped the Japanese box office, the film is reportedly only generating 60% of the performance of 2001's Spirited Away. There are more anime television series broadcast in Japan now than ever before (103 per week in the Tokyo area as of July), but relatively few of these titles are profitable on DVD.

Increasing export of animation work overseas to countries including South Korea and China has reduced costs, but has also resulted in fewer Japanese animators with skilled experience in creating animation. Reportedly most Japanese anime studios now color animation cels by computer, but the long running Sazae-san is one exception. A staff of 50 animators still hand paint every one of the show's animation cels.

The basset hound is an in-joke. The director has a basset hound and puts it in all his movies, when he did Ghost in the Shell 1 it appeared once on a bridge. Obviously come Ghost in the Shell 2 he took it to the max having the basset hound appearing about 60 times. It could be the dog had died and he wanted it to be immortalised. huh.gif
