Is anyone familiar with the album "Dawn of a New Century" by the group Secret Garden? I've heard from a lot of other people that it's too dark for them, but it's one of my personal favorites. I also got a chance to hear the new CD while working as a Universal intern, and it's amazing. I think it comes out in a couple of weeks, too.
If you haven't heard Secret Garden before, they're this ambient/new-age duo with violin over a mix of electronic and natural sounds -- really eclectic and original.
I recommend them a million times over -- what is everyone else listening to?

Hi, let me bet. I have listened to Amen's Piss Virus, this heavy metal song is so rare, few people have actually heard it. But it is great, if you heard the lyrics.

Lotus, I have no idea what you're talking about either. I'm not too familiar with heavy metal bands, although I have heard of Slipknot before -- a little out of my normal realm of listening. It each his or her own though.

I used to listen to a little Pantera, but that's really more just crazy metal and not really so dark. Haven't heard of this other band you are talking about.

People think Marilyn Manson is dark, but if you compare him to some of these other 'nu metal' bands (that are crap) Manson isn't actually that dark. It is all a facade, he isn't really all murderous and all. I tend to stay on the side of classic rock, I hate most modern music, of course with the exception of Blink 182. I guess my music taste are quite varied.
I heard this Slipknot song Duality, and I didn't know it was them, and when I found out, I was like 'whoa! how can this be Slipknot?' But apart from that, they aren't really for me.

Manson is definitely cool, he has some really good music (Especially off of Mechanical Animals), definitely one of my favorites. He is an incredibly intelligent man, and doesn't get the respect he deserves unfortunately.

The Pillows! They're the ones who sang "Ride on Shooting Star"; the ending theme for FLCL, right?
Back on topic, I don't like dark music, heavy metal, goth music, and suchlike.

Time to freak out our parents! My parents are actually really hard to freak out. My mum loves my ripped jeans and she dressed up as me the other day in my Thin Lizzy shirt. It was quite funny. And my dad just gave me a Hippy Chain from the 70's.
Hard to think that 'Shock Rocker' Alice Cooper scared parents of his day. I suppose legends like him are the basis of todays Shock Rock.

The hardest thing I've seen mentioned so far (that I've heard anyways) is At the Gates. Where's all the deathmetal at? Dying Fetus should have a place of honor, and what about Pro-Pain? Skinless, Traumaside, the list could go on. And what about the other genres? Depsite my advocacy for hard music, I have ecclectic tastes. I mean, what about Charlie Parker? Jazz needs a representative. So does Techno. Anyone get a chance to listen to some of Toby Emerson's stuff? How about some old school '80s like Phil Collins? There's gotta be more variety in tastes than I've seen so far.

Good idea for another thread, man. You should make one about it.
This one is about the heavier or darker genres of music.

You do know that any genre can be dark, right? I mean, I have some They Might Be Giants that might sound happy, but the lyrics definately aren't. Besides, dark isn't exactly the most descriptive guideline to use, simply because of the differences in people's concepts of "dark". Would you consider sad music dark? How about when there's no lyrics and it's just music, do the criteria change then? Sorry, it's just when you start talking about music, it's hard to put down dividing lines. The genres and styles just tend to blend a bit. In my defense though, after the thread title, it does ask what everyone is listening to.

hehe, Im currantly listening to Smashing Pumpkins, and if you REALLY listen to it, they have dark songs... not necessarily heavy, head banging kind of dark, but lyrical wise, they are a dark band. Most of their songs are angst filled ballads that start off start and then jump into heavy riffs.
