In popular science fiction, the power of invisibility is readily apparent. Star Trek fans, for example, know that the devious Romulans could make their spaceships suddenly disappear. But is the idea really so implausible? Not according to new findings by scientists who say they have come up with a way to create cloaking device. Electronic engineers at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia are researching a device they say could make objects "nearly invisible to an observer." The contrivance works by preventing light from bouncing off the surface of an object, causing the object to appear so small it all but disappears. The concept was reported today by the science news Web site news@nature.com. It says the proposed cloaking device would not require any peripheral attachments (such as antennas or computer networks) and would reduce visibility no matter what angle an object is viewed at. Sir John Pendry, a physicist at Imperial College, London, said the concept potentially holds several important applications "in stealth technology and camouflage."
While types of invisibility shielding have been developed before, the phenomenon described by Andrea Alú and Nader Engheta sounds like something that might have been witnessed from the bridge of science fiction's starship Enterprise. The concept is based on a "plasmonic cover," which is a means to prevent light from scattering. (It is light bouncing off an object that makes it visible to an observer). The cover would stop light from scattering by resonating at the same frequency as the light striking it. If such a device could cope with different wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation (including visible light), in theory, the object would vanish into thin air.

I saw a Discovery Channel episode about another technology being experimented with by the U.S. military.
The actual cammo suit's outer covering is actually made up of pixels, just like your computer screen. Several tiny cameras on the uniform project images from the soldier's surroundings onto the outer covering thereby making him virtually invisible.
They say that it's only in the experimental stage, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some special ops units would actually be using the technology right now.
Pretty cool stuff.

Fighting an enemy you can not see is dishonorable...
And if both opposing warriors become invisible, Well... That is just ridiculous.

yeah really...technology created by one culture never stays with that culture...I'm sure the world will have the same technology soon. So we will be having invisible wars?? starting to sound like Halo....
Then again, They will create some anti invisible pewp...

Yep. But it made America.
The British were the ones smart enough to wear red coats in a blinding white background of snow. The colonists were the ones dumb enough not to think so fashionably.

I think the last thing anyone thinks about is honor when they are trying to stay alive with bullets blazing past their head..and who cares if its dishonorable? If it helps win then why the hell wouldnt you use it? Trust me i love to have honor..but i like staying alive much more.

If they are micro cameras like someone here said then yea i suppose they would show up on sensors..but i wouldnt doubt they gave that thought already and are making sure they dont actually show up.

I agree.
America's tactics for example; bomb cities and locations/snipe and pretty much attack from as far away as possible, is very cowardly IMO.
NOW they're doing their best not to be seen at all.

The troops in Iraq are doing some brave things, risking there lives for a war that seems to just go on and on, its been over 2 years since it started...
The idea for this technology, much like Stealth Technology on Stealth bombers and the commanche's.....Is to limit casualties...There is nothing wrong with this!
No offense, but its either this or more troops dead in future wars, and i dont want more Marines dieing!
Im an Australian sane as you manfred, and i care for the well being of US troops and our SAS.
Calling them sissies aint a way to go either mate...You go sign ur ass up with the Army so we can call u a sissie aswell, wait, we dont need to wait for u to sign up to brand you >: |
Its just technology, No body wants to die....Its either Them or us...and id prefer to be on the side with the Cloaking technologies.
Sorry to mods if this is offensive....just needed to be said...i dont appreciate things like this being said about our armed forces as i know a SAS soldier that has had comrades fallen, been shot....i know he would of loved this technology in the battles he has been in...

Australia was never in any danger to begin with, and don't give me that "yet" crap either, so don't expect me to be grateful for these morons who freely throw their lives away for the whim of a madman.

I just miss those old fashioned rumbles they had back before gun powder. Swords, Daggers, Bows and Arrows, Catapults, Shields, etc, etc, etc. THAT'S how you fight a war!

Solved disputes overnight and no civilians got killed (unless of course they were damn dirty Norsemen

)
Bah, I'm talkin out my arse now...

@ Gabriel. It makes me laugh everytime I read that over and over again. Especially if you say it in an Irish accent! We all make our typos here and there...

Anyway, about them shields. I'd gladly have that cloak. whenever my dad gets into one of his long talks, I'll cover myself and casually walk away.... he won't even notice I've gone.

Well come to think of it, I walk away all the time, even without them cloaks.

I am sorry I am an American. I sorry I served in the Air Force.
And I'am sorry I don't know how to stop people from killing one another.
But using State of the Art weapons saved allot of my friends. And I help make more. Some day I will answer to God, but not to my Enemys.
