Full Version: Someone Explain String Theory

Okay, I caught the Discovery Channel episode last night. The multi-verse theory.

They say there are 11 dimensions and that String Theory can explain this.

The problem is....the entire time they were talking about this theory, I had no grasp of it. So can someone here explain it in some simple terms....without the math? What is the general theory?

You could try looking for The Elegant universe, it explains everything and comes in 3 parts, its quite good grin2.gif

String Theory or "Unifying Theory" is a Theory that einstein was trying to come up with when he tried to combind his theory of relativity and quantum physics.

Theroy of Relativity:is the theory of gravitation published by Albert Einstein Quick Summary:
Physicist born in Germany who formulated the special theory of relativity and the general theory of relativity; Einstein also proposed that light consists of discrete quantized bundles of energy (later called photons) (1879-1955)Albert Einstein in 1915. The conceptual core of general relativity, from which its other consequences largely follow, is the Principle of Equivalence, which describes gravitation and acceleration Quick Summary:
An increase in speedacceleration as different perspectives of the same thing,

Quantum Physics:Is made up of Strong and Weak Nuclear charges string being the explosion of the atom bomb weak being the radiation left over afterward.
And the final componant is Electro-Magnetism which is the force that if you were to jump off a building gravity would pull you down but Electro-magnetism would keep you from going through the ground.

Hope that helps!

My grasp on it allthough it's obviously a lot more complex, is that all things in the Universe are not actually made up of singular atoms, but of strings of atoms which connect and layer around each other.

As I said much more complex but that's what i've managed to glean from it.

i feel i have a pretty good understanding on string theory so i'll try and give it a shot

the average person believes everything in the universe is made up of atoms.

everything in the universe is made up of atoms, however what makes up the atom?

protons, neutrons, and electrons of course, and to most it ends there, but to those know a little more, they realize that protons and nuetrons are actually made up of smaller particles as well, called quarks, in one point of time people thought atoms were as small as it gets, but as time went on we discovered the electrons, protons, and neutrons, and as time went even further on we discovered quarks, now does it stop there? or does something make up quarks? currently we do not know but some beleive that even quarks may be made up of smaller particles, and those particles made of even smaller particles, and so on untill we get to the utmost fundamental particle in nature, a particle which can not be broken down anymore, a particle that in all essense is not even a particle

the common theory is that matter is made up of point particles, however string theorist beleive that all matter is actually made up of tiny strings of energy, to imagine what a string may look like, you can picture an elastic band, only instead of rubber think pure energy, and shrink it down a billion billion billion billion times or so

now if everything is made up of strings why isnt everything the same? its made of the same things right? well yes it is made up of the same things but the strings that make it up vibrate in differnt patterns, the vibration these strings give off determines what the string "is" in our reality

string theory requires 11 dimensions because the strings need the extra dimensions to vibrate, 3 dimensions would not give the strings enough diversity, and with these extra dimensions comes the "calabi-yau" shape, this is the shape the extra dimensions are theorized to be curled up in to assist the strings vibration, these extra dimensions are so small that attoms can not pass through them

the importance of string theory is that , if it is true we are one step closer with developing a theory of everything, it also means that multiple dimensions and spacial membranes are a possibility, leading to explanation of the big bang thumbsup.gif

Well a good place to learn about string theory is by watching The Elegant Universe. It really helped explain it. Just so happens that you can watch it online.
The Elegant Universe

Its a long show but well worth the watch. I hope you enjoy and learn. original.gif

Thanks for all the help, friends. This kind of thing interests me to no end. And I could read or watch things on the subject for hours. Just amazing stuff.

Anyone know where these can be dowloaded....they cant on this site.
Thanks

you can download the info into your brain at the public library

Has anyone seen the equations? I want to see the equations. Incidentally, the Chinese controlled experiments demonstrating the existence of apports (also known as teleportation) provides the only known evidence for string theory, since in all its myriad forms, it requires at least 6 extra spatial dimensions. Extra unseen spatial dimensions, infinite and linear, are required to explain how an object can get into or out of a closed container from or to a distant point.

If you dont have atleast an advanced understanding(understanding not knowledge) of calculus the equations are WAY too complex to be understood.

Well, I've been watching "The Elegant Universe" online stream. It has all 3 hours of the program. I've only just gotten through the 1st hour though, as their servers have been having some difficulty.

But I gotta say, that the way this guy explains things is real good. I don't have the knowledge behind all of the math, but he words things in a way that you don't really need to.

Sure, it would help. But I just want to get a general understanding of the theory. He is providing that easily.

i felt the same exact way through the film and the book, he tells it so anyone can understand, excellent style

grin2.gif This is good. But the string theorists have suggested no experiments, and a theory without testable consequences is just a fairy tale.

However, I like the fact that if it were true, it would solve the problem of singularities, in Black Holes, at the Big Bang, even inside an electron. It also has one remarkable consequence, these extra spatial dimensions. According to some versions (Stephen Hawking's, for instance) at least one is unrolled, linear and infinite. It is all around us, but physical matter cannot see it. Mind can, however, since it is dark matter. Such extra infinite spatial dimensions are required to understand apports (sometimes called teleportation).

hey where can i learn more about this linear infinite dimension?

Skeptics have long mocked string theory as untestable, because experimental studies of it would require machines of huge scale, perhaps even as big as the solar system. In his new book "Parallel Worlds" (Doubleday), Kaku disagrees and argues that the first experimental evidence for string theory might begin to emerge within several years from experiments with scientific instruments such as a new particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, which opens for business near Geneva in 2007.

isn't it nice that scientist have found what religion has always said?the strings, if real would pretty much prove the existence of god...

Because if proved true, the univerise would be proven to be one thing, one mass of singular bundled energy interacting in many seemingly different but not separated instances.
seeking
um.....that doesnt prove anything....there is one thing out there that makes up everything, some think it is strings, others think it is a point particle, lets say atoms were the most fundamental particle in the universe, would that prove the existance of god?
GIDEON MAGE
it might

*slightly versed in string theory*

String theory states that gravitons would be able to move throughout the alternate universes. Since gravity is so heavy in a black hole, could a black hole possibly be a portal to one of these dimensions?

Im not sure how you'd test that exactly. I know it is currently theorized that everything is crushed in a black hole, but is it possible?

I saw they were crashing hydrogen neucli together, looking for missing gravitons.

Recently they have created a black hole using gold instead of hydrogen.

If my theory is correct (which i have no idea if it is, it's more of a thought), then could we possibly create portals to another dimension? And if to one of those dimensions, what would be stopping us from changing the fourth dimension, time?
GIDEON MAGE
actually i think sagan already thought of that

ok so where does the unified field theory work into string theory? The philli experiment actually latched onto string also.

This was actually done accidentally in the phlladelphia experiment.
