This is a picture i scaned from a friend. His dad was driving home late one night and saw this on his driveway. He took a polariod pic and kicked the head over the edge of the road.

This should of been reported to the relevent authority, as it clearly shows an animal that has been butchered. And if your friend had done this they would of found out what the animal is.Looks to me like it might be from the feline family, cugar, lynx etc.

Not the kind of thing you want to find on your driveway when you come home.

I agree with Neenron, you should report it - there's every possibility that this was done intentionally. Severed head's shouldn't turn up in your garden on their own.

Damn!!!!
Kick it over the edge onto the road?!?!
I wouldn't even get near to the damned thing, let alone kick it! There is something extremely horrifying about severed heads.

I have NO idea what that could be.... its muzzle is a little too long to be a cat but its ears are too small to be anything related to a wolf.....?

I think the scariest thing about this is not that it's a severed head, or the fact that it is not known what type of animal it is....
... but that the thing which dismembered that odd creature was on your driveway....

its obviously been scavenged on by some creature. does your friend have a dog or a cat? that would explain it ending up on their driveway.
looks like a coyote head to me. often they will get hit by a car on a back road and fall into extremely nasty condition, only to be found by a dog or cat by their smell.

Rino, what country do you live in? This thing almost appears to have a mane when I look at it in photoshop. No big cat or any other major predator here in the U.S. has one. Definitly looks like a feline to me. The reason the snoat looks elongated is probably because the ears appear pinned back.

One other thing, the only maned animal ever native to the U.S. were American Lions, which are now extinct.

Since we don't have much information on it, I would hold off on saying what it is for sure but the teeth look like they are from a feline.
As for reporting it or not, depends on where you live really. If it is in the suburbs - perhaps you should have, if you live in a rural area stuff dies all the time and is scavenged - not a big deal.
Oh, Naveed - bison have manes. It is incorrect to say that only the American Lions were the only animal native to the U.S. with a mane.

I Live in Washington, America. He showed me this picture years ago and i just asked him for it now and found rather intesting. As for reporting it i think it is to late to do anything like that.
I live remote country and weird stuff happens all the time around here. Like Some friends of mine once found dead animals hanging in trees. Now i am very cautious about going out late.
I'm not as afraid of the animal but more afraid of what killed it. I've never seen a bear around but have heard of many cougars.

Well I was trying to say maned felines. I didn't even think about bison.
Didn't even realize they had manes.

Hi Rino welcome to the board ,
Well I have spent a fair amount of time looking at this pic , and my humble guess would be that it is a Cougar . The skin is quite thin and translucent which means the animal has probably been dead for over 24 hours . Over this amount of time the fluid has been slowly evaporating from the body of the animal causing the skin to shrink back from the bone .
What other kind of predatory animals live around your area Rino. It looks as though this Cougar has had a run in with some type of pack animal . As teritorial disputes between predators don't often end in death and this fella seems to have gone out fighting .
I do have one question . Where on earth did the red patch on the ground next to the head come from ? If it's blood it's way to fresh to belong to the owner of the head .

Here's a pic of a Cougar with it's mouth open . Looks pretty similar to me

Interesting...
Welcome to the forum Rino
How big was the head? Could it have been a normal cat that your friend took the pic of, if it was then it could have been attacked by just about anything.
By the look of it, it has been cut off at the neck, and then scavenged at the back of the head, shown by the dark patch of dried blood at the back, but why would the blood at the back look dark and dry, and the bit on the neck be all bright red and new looking?

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=www...%3Doff%26sa%3DGlook at the bottom of that page- there are some different types of skulls. i don't think this skull is very cat like at all. the teeth are cat like, but the length of the muzzle and the mane are not cat like.
maybe its a weasel, wolverine, or some other type of carnivore? like a marten or something. without scale, its very hard to tell how large the head is.
Kismit
May 12 2003, 10:07 PM
Your right Shwartz scale would be a fine thing . I can't quite pick the mane out on my computer . However hair loss is also a part of the decomposition process also the time of year the photo was taken could create a maned effect . I think I need a closer inspection of the original picture , however I am still leaning towards it being a Cougar .
Here is a pic of a Wolverine the Canine teeth apear to sit much farther back .
It's just like checking out dental records aint it

Rino,
You'll need to email it to Saruman at webmaster@unexplained-mysteries.com. He can post the picture for you, as you are restricted to 20kb size allotment.

Here's the higher quality image. To reduce the file size I've cut out the head and omitted the rest of the picture.

To me, although I am nowhere's near being an expert on this, the head looks feline, but the teeth look rather large for them to belong to that skull (unless that is due to the skin shrinking that the teeth appear larger)?...

I also think it is an American Lion .. But poor thing .. who did that to it
How could they

?
And yes I agree with SaRuMaN .. they should report it .. it is important .. They should find out who did this to this poor creature .. and that criminal should get his penalty

It looks like it's been dead for awhile, the skin looks all papery and the lips have shrunken back from the teeth. It looks like it could be a wolverine to me, I could be wrong.
Also, I think somebody killed it and threw it in the drive as a prank. I've seen all kinds of dead animals out here, roadkill and things something has gotten hold of, and rarely do you see just a severed head. I'd find whatever sick retard did this and give him a good kick in the groin.

actually, I was thinking Lynx, or Bobcat.....they also have tuffs about the neck that look like a mane.
OR could be a domestic dog....
That was a very unpleasant surprise.....

Canadian Lynx info.Hi i'm new here but to me it appears to be a lynx like Ladyspirit_guide said,
I believe this mostly because it looks like it has the characteristic black tip ears & a lot of fur around their necks, plus living in Washington in area where the Canadian Lynx's habitat overlaps.
This is my guess.

Jul 24 2003, 11:23 AM
i have to agree with espdracomth and ladyspirit it looks to me like a lynx, but whats more worrying is where is the rest of it, predators don't usually carry head away from the rest of the carcass, they prefer to keep it whole, and protect there dinner rather than carry it off but then again there is always the possibility another predator carried the head off and just dumped it on your driveway, the way the head has been severed suggests it was ripped off rather than clean cut so i guess i can safely say that a predator just dumped it rather than some sick weirdo cutting off heads and randomly annoying you. i hope that helps.

It definitely appears to be K9. I would say it is what's left of a feral/wild dog. It didn't die happy, that's for sure. It also could be a victim of a dog fighting organization.

after i sound out diablos full name(welcome!

) then i'll try to use what used to be my brain... okay. when we use common sense, it was obviously a human being. the head is too neatly severed to be done by biting or scratching then it is probably a practical joke of some sort. anyone nearby who owns a gun of any kind?

Jul 30 2003, 01:15 AM
The dog very well could have died in a dog fight. I'm sure the head was removed "after" death..and my thoughts exactly, it's a practical joke...and a sick one at that.

Pardon my douvle post, but I put this to my good friend Claire and she did a kinda post mortem on the picture (cause she's dead good at that kinda thing)
"Hiya guys!
Well first off, its obvious (as someone has said, I believe) that this thing has been dead for over a day, the blood's been drained from it. Secondly, that thing didnt die on your drive...Its my guess someone (something) put it there...otherwise there'd be a huge mess, blood splattered all over the shop and such (though I appreciate you would've washed that one off).
From the pic, It looks like it isnt a clean cut...do Im guessing it's an animal did that, not something like a cult, cause they'd have jadded tears or clean cuts.
Looks in pain...Im guessing this thing didnt put up much of a fight, which suggests something bigger got it and did this.
Looks to be a wolf...so Im guessing its that, but Im no expert...
Anyways, later!"
You can expect more from Claire on various topics...she rules!
