A Brazilian woman with two wombs has given birth to healthy twins - one from each womb. Doctors had to perform a caesarean section four weeks before the full 40-week term, but said the non-identical twins - a boy and a girl - and their mother were fine.

It is extremely rare for foetuses to develop normally and symmetrically in women with two wombs, doctors say.

My mother thought she was carrying twins while pregnant with me. However, it turned out not to be the case.

Upon my birth, a second placenta was found to have been growing, almost full size, attached to the first. The slightly smaller placenta was perfectly formed, and functioning normally, as if it should have had a baby within, but was completely empty.

The medical staff were gobsmacked, saying that they had never seen anything like that before.

My mother agreed to let them take the second placenta away, and to this day, it is preserved somewhere within Manchester University.

I shouldn't really have told you that, should I?

Surely they can't be twins.

Yes, they were born at the same time but they didn't come from the same eggie and spermie did they?

They sure are twins, only identical twins originate fron the same egg - hence why they are " identical ". Non identical twins originate from separate eggs but are still twins anyway. The only difference here is that the babies have developed in separate wombs.

Identical twins form when a single fertilized egg splits into two genetically identical parts. The twins share the same DNA set, thus they may share many similar attributes. However, since physical appearance is influenced by environmental factors and not just genetics, identical twins can actually look very different. Identical twins are always same-sex sets.

Fraternal twins develop when two separate eggs are fertilized and implant in the uterus. The genetic connection is no more or less the same as siblings born at separate times. They may look alike, or they may not.

Guess we'd call them fraternal twins then, huh?
