Im assuming this is the right forum for this, sry if its not. Ok ive always considered dreams to a combination of are memories and are imagination kind of being flashed in front of us while we sleep. Everyone knows that when you sleep most of your body's functions shut down except for the vital ones. So are memories and imagination and thoughts kind of go unchecked in our brain, so they just kind of pop up because are brain isnt fully aware of whats going on when u sleep.

This has always been what i believed dreams were, but there is also another level to dreams that is commonly unexplained by my idea of what dreams are. For exampl: Some ppl see there dead relatives in there dreams some see the future or the distant past, and some dream things that could not possibly be memory or imagined.

So what im asking of yopu guys is to give me another view on what dreams are. A gateway through time?? A way to see other dimensions or planes?? Or the ability to see the other side?? Now while u ponder this remember humans only use 33% of thier brain. Whats the other large portion for?? Could be the psychic part of us that we have not yet descovered until we evolve further. Could be are vision into "the other side", maybe the reason some ppl see ghosts and others dont. Well i think u get what im saying here, so plz respond. Thanks.

P.S. Oh yeah Dreams are also the way Freddy can get you so dont fall asleep

There have been quite a few theories on dreams, try googling: Sigmund Freud, activation-synthesis, and neurocognitive..

im pretty sure we use most or all our brain just not at the same time.
that said, maybe dreams are a product of us using more of less then
what we do while awake, like a form of meditation.
its hard for me to imagine what dreams could mean of stand for. but
sometimes i injure myself in a dream and acually feel the pain like
its real i belive its not when i wake up and find out im ok blush.gif

The scientific explaination for why we dream is this, When your body shuts down the only things left running are the brain and the heart. Because the brain isnt getting any stimulation from being awake and dealing everyday life, It makes up its own little world so that its not just sitting there atrophying. The brain is like a car engine, if you leave it sitting for too long the engine wont run as well, so it keeps itself busy even when your not doing anything.

I believe dreams are the reality of the unconcious mind, just as the concious mind lives in the day-to-day reality, the unconcious mind lives in the who-the-hell-knows reality.

Correction: humans only use 8%-10% of their brains maximum "potential",(Einstien used 13% supposedly)

There used to be a book if I can rememeber because it was a long time ago when I read it, I mean way back in highschool. The book had the definitions of what your dream meant. It was pretty cool...

I wonder if anyone knows the book I'm talking about? If I can find it again, perhaps it'll help this guy out...

Much to the contrary actually. Our brain IS fully aware of what's going on when we are in a sleep state. To understand dreams and their functions it is necessary to understand the brain. It is interesting that all mammalian brain structures are similar.
Frogs, birds, dogs, primates, all share the same 'primitive brain structures'. The part of the brain I am refereing to is known as the Limbic System. To understand dreams we must also have a proper perspective of the evolution of sleep. Before the evolution of the neo-cortex, the primitive brain (limbic system) assessed the world around us. When a twig snapped the primitive brain assessed the situation to secure its own survival.
With the evolution of the neo-cortex, the ability to 'sleep' more securely changed. However, the primitive brain is still assessing its surroundings and for the same reasons...to secure its own survival. What the primitive brain is assessing is 'influence'.
Influences that have an impact on our mental health. Dreams are imagery that the primitive brain uses in an attempt to understand the influences that are impacting our sleeping mind. During the waking hours, these 'influences' are dealt with consciously, while those which have a significant impact on our mental well being are analyzed further by the primitive brain while we sleep.

Your thoughts are welcome.....

by the way...welcome to the forum original.gif

So your saying that while we sleep, anything that happens in the room is interpreted in your dreams by your mind?

Freud explain them like a scientist, with his eyes closed. If your really want to learn about dream, just ask a dreamer.

Don't you all have those dreams where you are hearing something breaking, maybe you broke it in your dream, but it wakes you up and you find that something in your house/room has fallen and broken? I believe our bodies become extremely supersensitive to all that goes on while in a dream state. Sometimes I leave my radio on after I fall asleep. Most times I wake up when one of my favorite songs comes on. I listen till it's over and then go back to sleep, only to wake up again to hear another song that I love. I don't know what this is but it's cool anyway.
Comments Please.

If you'd like to read a good piece of literature on dreams, check out The Sandman Chronicles by Neil Gaiman. Its about Morpheus, the dream king, and how the inner workings of dreams are taken care of. Its undoubtedly fiction, and also a comic book, but brings up some interesting points. grin2.gif

I know that I dream every night, but in the morning I always can't remember them. However, the other night my alarm accidentally went off at about four AM, I woke up, switched it off, and went back to sleep...

And in the morning remembered every detail of my dream. I've been setting my alarm to four every day now, because the dreams are so interesting and amazing. thumbsup.gif But why four in the morning to remember? wacko.gif

correction! humans use 100% of there brians, Einstein also used 100%, and so do you!

again: you never hear the doctor say "good thing the bullet it him inthe X% of the brain we dont use"

Some say that when you sleep your astral body leaves your physical body and goes back and forth, and it is in the astral plane that your mind carries out it's ordering/sorting whatever the crazy glob is doing.
Some dreams you experience are quite bland and lifeless, almost like a black and white film, some say this is a dream in your brain, then you get those amazing dreams so vivid and full of colour and life, and that these most fun of dreams are the ones that occur in the astral plane.
Now for proof of that, there is none really, nothing scientific, which is generally how we classify proof, so go figure tongue.gif

Oh, and about the 100% brain thing, many people have had bullets lodged in their brains and have no side effects, doctors can remove most of your frontal lobe without affecting too much, mostly personality, I'm not entirely sure, but I know that parts of the brain can be removed.
