....many times, but hey.
Whats everyones thoughts on this?
Dinosaurs roamed the earth hundreds of millions of years ago.
Human beings came into existence, oooh, i dunno, say a million years ago.
Yet less than 150 years ago there was no such thing as telephones, televisions, even electricity.
What is the reason that technology has evolved at such an incredible rate compared to the planet's overall hisotry? Why wasn't there someone from the time of Bruce and Wallace to the time of Queen Victoria (some 600 odd years), that was able to invent some of the stuff we see today. What the hell did scientists do in these 600 years? And before. Why did it take man so many hundreds of thousands of years just to build a proper house?? The core materials have always been here, why is it only recently that the internet was invented, when the telephone was invented about 100 years before?
Has time travel become possible thousands of years into the future, and some bright dude has come back in time to the start of the last centurry and shook up the world as we know it?
Thoughts??

Industrial Revolution changed a hell of a lot of things.
The dinosaurs evolved so much over the space of time in which they existed.
Once we invent one thing, for example iPods, that technology information and knowledge that we have gained will be put to use again. Last year, iPods had no click wheels, and now they have coloured screens, can store phots, and hold up to 25,000 songs.

That, and you also have to remember the dark ages - about a thousand years when science was blasphemy, and the church murdered just about anyone attempting to make advances in it. Without the dark ages, the chances are we'd be colonising the moon right now.
Other factors are that civilisation has only existed for maybe...10-15000 years...mankind has spent most of its existance in iscolated, nomadic groups. So the potential for advance has been relativaly recent....
Finally, humans are stupid

As much as many of us are unwilling to accept it, it's true

Of the five hundred billion humans that have ever lived, there have been maybe a few thousand that have made any significant impact in the advancement of the species....therefore, advances are only made either when a suitable genius (such as Isacc Newton) pops up, or someone else intelligent enough to take advantage of their work does.

Since the dinosaurs died out the mammals were then free to take their place on the earth. We started out small, only rodents, for several million years until Ape Man appeared on the scene, about 4 million years ago. He was a very simple critter and didn't do to much out on the plains of africa other than eat fruits and sleep in caves.
A million years passes and another man appears on the scene, Upright man. He was the Homo Sapiens predessor and he was a thoughtful critter, watching other animals and devising ways to kill them. He created tools, spears even, and started wearing animal furs to keep him warm as the earths climate started to drop. He lived in caves and learned to roast animal meats on fires, even pained decorations around his dormains. He moved north and colonised most of Eurasia.
Then, only about 150,000 years ago, we appeared. The Homo Sapien. 'Wiseman'.
The Wiseman was very cunning. He built houses, even started trades with other groups of Wisemen living in other areas. He devised language, built towns and societies, and created a golden age.
This way of life continued for some time until only about 300 years ago, when things started to dramatically change. 200-150 years ago was the magnificent industrial revolution and since that time man has progressed so incredibly fast, he seems almost limitless in his advancements. The industrial time unlocked a massive amount of technology in which we've been using since to progress ourselves.
[edit] And i would like to add, the reason why things changed only around 200-300 years ago, was because of Sera said.
There was a time when religion ruled the earth. It is known as the Dark Ages. ANd it stopped all advancement of the human race for some long time.

What I don't understand is (showing my ignorance once again)
is why DINOSAURS didn't invent the telephone, tv etc. How come in all
those millions of years they didn't evolve "Humanoidy". Was it just 'coz
they all had small brains etc or what ?

The most intelligent dinosaur was believed to be no more intelligent than an ostridge...so...there's that answered

Humans evolved in the direction of intelligence partly because we lacked any kind of physical advantage...naturally, we're virtually unarmed. We're physically very weak in relation to our size, and we're not really built for speed. Intelligence, those of us who were able to build tools and weapons to survive, were the only ones who stood any chance of survival.

They weren't capable. Just like humans today aren't capable of living peacefully. Also, they had no need for it. Humans need weapons, and are defenceless, so they need guns etc. Dinosaurs were too well equipped for technology.

isnt the dark ages limited to a period in europe after the fall of rome?
Im not sure exactly where the crusades went but I know that for all the time when there was a dark age in europe other societys were still progressing at a steady rate, specifically egypt which we will never know how close they actually came to producing revolutionary technologies because the crusades destroyed any evidence for this.
once religious faith was shattered by the scientific revolution (I believe science will eventually bring us back to this religious faith we so easily deny) the white man lost any hope he had at becoming sophisticated. we are by far the most technologically advanced society this planet has seen, but we are definitly less sophisticated then most great civilizations before us, such as the babylonians, the egyptians, and the chinese which still beat us out (us as in north america and europe) marginally.

You mean societies that had ritual sacrifices and the like?

And geez, if you're holding modern day China up as a paragon of a sophisticated and virtuious society, well...
