The common belief is this -

Ancient man, whilst building their moats, castles and cropping, came across the bones of dinosaurs and, not knowing how old these bones were, became fearful that gigantic lizards were roaming the earth. As generations passed the stories became more exaggerated, eg, they grew wings, they breathed fire etc.

This would account for dragon stories popping up worldwide.

That makes sense! Also, though, large lizards LIKE the Komodo are the base of storys like St George and the Dragon, and so this could also add to the fossil thing.

I agree with Mad Manfred.

I agree with Mad Manfred. Although, it would be very cool, and frightening at the same time to be harvesting your crops when all of a sudden the sun is blocked out as a dragon flies by. You look up and just see it gliding there, across the sky, huge and majestic...Basically, what I'm saying is, I love the concept.

Well, their of course is a possibility that many of the islands, continents, and countries could have contained the same mythical creature. But also, a great mind of creativity could boost the popularity of the myth up. Say a myth could be made. Usually the myth would have to be based on something. So lets say they (people who wrote myths about the dragons) saw a komodo dragon. That was the first time they ever saw a strange animal like that. They learn about it, learn what it eats, etc. Then, they make entertainment out of it and include it in fictional stories like the talking komodo dragon. Then, it could be made into a myth with a little spice and exaggeration. And bam! there you have it, a myth that could be believed, that sounds real, and could be real. The komodo dragon was exaggerated into a lighter green, more scaled, fire-breathing (where superpowers could have been added for the fun of it to make it sound like an intimidating devil) monsterous monster. A group of travelers on the island heard about it. They traveled to conquer. Their new conquered friends were told about the myth and so on and on. It wouldn't happen like that (possibly it could) but I think you get the point I'm trying to make. Thats a suggestion I would have to make.

I think it was St. George and the Dragon, might be another, but this is how one legend was explained to me:

King came back from crusading/vacation/something with an aligator or crocodile. It got loose. It ran to a village. To medeival man, a croc or gator looks an awful lot like a dragon. So St. George slew the poor, bewildered animal.

Quetzocoatl's story makes me laugh, though. He ruled over the Aztecs in a light-skinned, human form. One day, his enemies drove him away, but he vowed to return. Decades later, a group of light-skinned stranges showed up and their leader was hailed as the returning Dragon King.

His name was Cortez.

On my thread (Here be Dragons), i mentioned the thing Animal Planet has comming soon. It looks like they take some basic dragon myths and create CGI dragons and let them run loose in hypothetic scenarios! yes.gif *is very excited*

The episode coming soon on Animal Planet certainly looks like a cool interesting episode, though they sure make it look so fictional, no?
dragonlady_mothman
it's hard not to. sure, they could have mocked-up interviews with St. George and the Gurgler (that would be SO awesome!) but everyone would know it was still fictional.

Unless you mean something different.
Walken
The fire breatheing just comes from a collective fear, and mythology.

Most of our views are that they are fake, or at least I think.

You should start a poll on it.
Walken
I think there has been one.
