So....
Because I'm nosey, what kind of chess does everyone prefer to play? I prefer live chess myself, not very good at keeping track of a game plan if I have to wait 24 hours for someone to move

plus I get bored waiting for a game to finish, I'd much rather just get on with it.
Also I thought we could pass on some tips to some of the less experienced players to help them improve their game altho obviously not anything that is going to affect a game in progress lol.
my tip for the day - never underestimate your pawns, every one of them is a potential queen.

If its with a chess board, then live, but if its online then might as well have a big long think. Although it is annoying when you've got your opponent beaten yet they cling on to every last move they can make meaning the game goes on another day or two before you finally get the mate.
my tip for the day - After the Queen, the rook is the most powerful piece. Its suicide to give it up.

And after those two, the pawn is the most powerful piece

.
So if you lost both your queen and your rooks, be sure to have pawns lying around to get them into your enemy's base

i think every piece is equally valuable-but i tend to favor the knight for its ability to jump-im curious if anyone here enjoys chess "variants" -im a big fan -most are just simple rule variations and other add features like new pieces or cards(like nightmare chess-which uses an 80 card deck of cards that are drawn for each turn and affect rules in different ways)--a good example of a rule variation type would be
Hostage Chess-here is an exaple of avariant that adds a new piece
Gothic Chess-heres a look at
Knightmare Chessand finally just so you will realize the depth of variety in chess "variants" here is a link to the official "variant" page with an uncountable number 0f variations-
Chess Variants-some can be played on computers using the program on the variant page called "zillions of games"-some need to be played live--enjoy--im actually putting the finishing touches on my own variant and it rocks but i still need to copyright and patent the rules-its cool though

Ok sure Sera, I think I can actually add the three of you if Janiel wants to join aswell, there are two players who haven't played a single game who I'm probably going to remove from the list.

As of Wednesday 16th March I will be away until after Easter as I have to work in London till then, if I have any outstanding games I'll make an effort to get back here and finish them <-- see, that's dedication to the cause right there!
thebarman's tip of the day: Always assume your opponent knows what you're trying to do, this will help you think about what you're going to do if they actually DO know what you're trying to do

Hi all, I'm back from the shooting cadre. I'm really sorry about the time outs, but it was a last minute thing.
I came third overall and next stop is Bisley for the competition.

Well done coming third. When is this other competition?

2 weeks time mate. It's only over a w/end though, so no need to postpone or timeout this time.

I was trying to move the horse into checking the king, having it already pinned with the queen and diagonally moving dude. Didn't realise i could have just moved the queen, since it would have been protected by the dude.

I'm not to swift with the names of the pieces.
Where ever i go, Canada, UK, etc, they're all called different things, so i got totally confused, and now, thee shalt be thy diagonally movin dude.
Seraphina
Mar 16 2005, 06:15 PM
Midgit = pawn
horse = knight
castle = rook
...diagonally moving dude

= bishop
I imagine king and queen are self explanatory

If you've heard them called other things, then the person who told you so is incorrect

Mar 16 2005, 06:17 PM

BurnSide
Mar 16 2005, 06:19 PM
Ahh, so the castle is a rook. I always called it a castle, figuring the DMD was the rook, but he was actually the bishop..
Thanks guys. I'm gonna print that diagram out and stick it above my monitor.
Talon
Mar 16 2005, 06:36 PM
Actually the name castle and rook and often interchanged. Officially castle is just supposed to be the special move were your king and rook can switch places in a corner so long as neither has moved, but if you use the word castle instead of rook everyone knows what it means.

Mar 17 2005, 04:23 PM
That diagram looks like a scene from the simpsons.
They do have diffrent names depending on where you come from, in Saudia Arabia they all have different titles. But for most English speaking countries it's as above.

Talon's tip of the day - Don't use your queen early, it just means that the oponent develops every peice on the board trying to force it back. The end result is, your queen is back in the back line where she started and you've gotten nowhere, while your oponent happily has at least several pawns and an officer out in the field.
Thistle
Mar 17 2005, 09:32 PM
Also.....don't castle too early, by effectively putting your king in a corner early, you've given your opponent more time and opportunity to direct all their pieces straight towards him.
