Yeah, there have been multiple extinction-level eruptions in the past. Yellowstone alone is said to erupt every 120,000 years or so. So certainly there were like eruptions "before".
Here we come volcanic-ash-nuclear-winter!! WOO HOO! Sledding every day for a decade! My crappy neighbors will be dead!

I recently saw a special on Discovery Channel on this. yellowstone is actually made up of 3 craters and as of the most recent readings everything is fairly stable. They are thinking maybe at least a couple hundred years before the next eruption. But very scary stuff if u ask me as I live on the east coast.

Don't scare the customers...
Okay, back to seriousness. I have to agree with Conspiracy. No one can predict an eruption. A volcano that seems stable could possibly erupt the next day. A volcano that is predicted to erupt tomorrow possibly may not erupt for another hundred years. It all comes back to a 'who knows?' scenario. If it does, then a great many people are in trouble. If it doesn't, then hey, a great many people have it made.
Then again, looking on the bright side or whatever, it is a good thing that they don't think it will erupt. Despite the fact that it can go any minute, it is still good to know that it is starting to seem more stable. Thanks for the info, CTU_Recon.

Well, at least I have a little bit going for me. I'm on the other side of the US. So maybe I won't be buried by lava, but now I have to worry about the ash, I believe.

no its been stated that most of the ash will just cover america, very little is going to go around the world, the one thing i fear most more then this cursed volcano is the volcanic winter itll bring, thats gonna be harsh to live threw..

Hey, guys, I just re-found a link I used on a different thread. It states that the lava could, in fact, cover the whole US. Wouldn't the ash exapand to cover even more area? In any case, yes, there will definately be a nuclear winter following this thing. QUOTE
Magma would be flung more than 50 kilometres into the atmosphere. Within a thousand kilometres virtually all life would be killed by falling ash, lava flows and the sheer explosive force of the eruption. Volcanic ash would cover places thousands of miles away. One thousand cubic kilometres of lava would pour out of the volcano itself, enough to coat the whole of the USA with a layer a few inches thick. The explosion would have a force 1000-2500 times that of Mount St. Helens. It would be the loudest noise heard by man for more than 75,000 years, the time of the last super volcano eruption. Within minutes of the eruption tens of thousands could be dead.
The long-term effects would be even more devastating. The thousands of cubic kilometres of ash that would shoot into the atmosphere could block out light from the sun, making global temperatures fall dramatically. This is called a nuclear winter. As during the Sumatra eruption a large percentage of the world's plant life would be killed by the ash and severe drop in temperature. Effects world wide would cause massive food shortages. If the temperatures decline by the 21 degrees they did after the Sumatra eruption the Yellowstone super volcano eruption could truly be an extinction level event.
Humans could be pushed to the edge of extinction. Anthropologists suggest it won't be the first time.
Here is the link to the site; the paragraphs are near the bottom. What do you guys think? Do you think it is exaggerating? Could it be true?

I didn't read the past 15 pages.. But I watched the TV shows you're (threadstarter) talking about.
It'd trigger a climate change and we'd ultimately be living in an ice age, assuming there were survivors. I hope it doesn't go in my lifetime.

It would bother you, maybe a week or so after the first eruptions. Ash would begin raining down and it'd ultimately restrict you to your home for weeks on end. You'd have to stock up on a huge load of food and water if you've got any chance of survival.
