Anyone watch this last night on BBC ?
Man when that Yellowstone park decides to go ...we may as well pack up and start burying ourselves !
If the Volcano doesn't get us the Tsunami will.....and it could happen at any moment.Between this and the expected Rock Slide on Gran Canaria which will cause 4-500 foot high Tsunami's i think we're well buggered.
The 2nd part is on tonight ...if this hasn'e aired in the US yet dont worry it will soon.Watch out for it ......If you dare crying.gif crying.gif

BTW......For those who dont know....The crater is a hunderd miles wide,All of Yellowstone park sits inside it....So American Friends...probably best avoided for your Holidays thumbsup.gif

Scary stuff..........and i dont mean "almost haunted nearly live" grin2.gif thumbsup.gif

I saw a show about that on Discovery Channel once. It scared the pants off of me. It was very interesting, they showed how the land is shifting, and water in the park is actually being displaced because of it. The land has shifted that much. It is truly a frightening concept, probably because they said it could go tomorrow, or hundreds of thousands of years from now. They just don't know.
Bogeyman
According to the show last night ...it goes at least every 600,000 years........It's been 640,000 years since the last one !!!!!!!!Uh Oh !!!

Not true, most scientists believe that it will not happen at all. By the way, most experts say that the eurpution tank is as large as Toyko, the worlds largest city. no.gif
mystic meg
it is scary really

like you said what with that and the gran canaria slide, also if the indian plate moves again and causes another tsunami, the ice caps are melting at such a rate we are all going to drown before long, and they also recon when the maldives finally sink (within the next 50 years or so) it will cause a wave like the tsnami of boxing day.

we are all dommed really! grin2.gif

What I don’t get is releasing the information about the Gran Canaria volcano that would slide wiping out most of Americas Western seaboard. Now all you need is some extreme group with a device powerful enough to kick start it and bye bye…?

I read a lot about Yellowstone as I am just downwind of it. Any way, I saw a show that included some geology in Iowa that seemed to prove that yellowstone erupted about 70,000 yrs ago and is cited as the reason for the massive population bottleneck that reduced the world population to 2,000 or 20,000 people. So, if YS erupted 70,000 yrs ago I gues we are safe, maybe. Anyway recent activity is a better indicator of portending epruption than time span. Unfortunately recent activity says we should worry. As to the population bottleneck, I don't think that all the surviving population was in Africa as the fellow in Nat'l Geo show seemed to think. If YS erupted and caused a massive continental plate shift as is speculated, then we can expect that the survival rate was greater than even 20,000 and more widespread as land masses were moved out of harm's way. Just a thought but hey, my degree is in Business and Economics.

Yep, if the cycle's correct (that is, not hundreds of thousands but more to tens of thousands of years) we're a little overdue. Some scientists even said it won't happen at all, in my opinion they could just be putting this all aside as usual again because it's too worrying. But just so you guys know, recently almost 1500++ volcanoes have been active and showing signs of eruption simultaneously, all around the world, unprecedented since thousands of years ago. Moreoever, many underwater volcanoes are increasing its activities. Now geologists and volcanologists are afraid of a mega-volcanic eruption. I heard this one has a.....if I'm not mistaken, 74,000 year cycle? If true, it'll be due this coming 2012.

Who knows what's going to happen, but I suggest we look at the activities of our Sun, in which also has recently showed signs unseen since records began, or thousands of years ago....maybe even longer. Coupled with the mysterious "booms" all around the world and the recent starquake....hmm, I smell something very, very fishy here. blink.gif I have another opinion in which I think is also contributing towards all these anomalies, but I need more info. thumbsup.gif

Wow, everything seems to be going down in 2012. And we have only been keeping records of the sun for about the past 100 years, so we don't really know what goes on with it.

Judgement day. thumbsup.gif

Seriously, though, I remember reading about this stuff on some website. If it were to go, things would be bad (note the emphasis), but there is an observatory set up to monitor the park. Any major raises in activity would be caught (hopefully), and people would be evacuated. Unfortunately, the effects of the eruption would extend for miles upon miles, meaning that a huge chunk of the worlds population would be affected. Still, there would be at least some effort to limit deaths related to the eruption.

That is, unless one geologist catches a major change in the volcano's activity, heads off to his bosses to inform them; they ignore him, thinking he's a paranoid douche. He prances off to the white house to inform the president (that's the way it HAS to go. Always.), and once again gets rejected. Suddenly, the lightning begins. Instance hollywood blockbuster.
absinthegreen329
Haha Gazerbeams. That is how it always happens (The movie thing). I would be screwed if that volcano erupted...I am just a couple of states over. I must go out to build a bomb shelter now! Hmm.....

Steel
Lots of freeze dried food
Water
Lots off frozen mice (for my snakes of course)
Giant freezer
Dog and cat food.

Oh crap! Funding! I have no money ph34r.gif ...oh well.

jessicalawes11
They said on the thing afterwards it's more likely that it won't happen in our lifetime, but of course, they can't be sure!

The signs point towards it, but we must remember that Yellowstone is a very volcanic area anyway, and all these things have happened over a long period of time, and go away again. Let's just hope for the best! original.gif

Subtle... Yeah that's your problem grin2.gif

I really don't think this will happen in our lifetime...
But if it happens, it happens and then we'll deal with it then. gunsmilie.gif
jessicalawes11
Yeah! Instead of getting all worried about it, I try to remind myself that even if it DID happen in my lifetime, I can just try to struggle through. Heck, loads of people will be trying to help! And we have some pretty smart people. They'll find a way to shift those big, blanketing clouds! thumbsup.gif

not that i don't believe in super volcanoes, actually seen this one on nat. geographic a while ago but what the heck - nothing else we can do about it

Would have to be a party to end all parties, quite literally wiggle.gif thumbup.gif

But it is highly doubtful that it will happen in our lifetime thought, and as for the 2012 business, every year someome somewhere says something about the world ending at some particular point.. Take the millenium an the Millenium Bug.. just chill out an live your life an if it happens, it happens, nothing anyone can do to stop it anyhow (thats my opinion anyway) thumbsup.gif

But they most likely will make a movie of it sometime soon, hollywood loves a big disaster movie and i cant think of a bigger subject matter for a disaster grin2.gif thumbsup.gif

They did make a movie, it was called "Volcano".
Mr. Blonde
I've read up on this a little bit, its pretty bad. But the sick thing is how the year 2012 pops up everywhere, the first time I heard of it was about 7 years ago at school watching a Mayan, Aztec video. But since then upon scowering the interweb it has come up time and time again. I dont know what to believe on that one, like most of the gibberish I read. What is true?
Neo2005
The supervolcano has been around for a long time i've always wondered if i would live to see a huge volcano explosion like Mt. St.Helens
the_phenom22
[COLOR=red]

Yeah i remember that movie volcano, but one about a super-eruption would be so much better..
the_phenom22
You never do know Neo, But if Yellowstone does go, Itll be a hell of alot larger than St Helens.. Prolly dont want to be alive if it does go off!!
jessicalawes11
It would basically kill all Americans, and then all the dust and suchlike would go up into the atmosphere and cause a nuclear winter all over the world. Very, very chilly.

There'll be no-where to hide, and it will last for YEARS. It's kind of like an asteroid hitting the Earth, but obviously different in where it comes from.

But I wouldn't worry about it. It's unlikely it will happen in our lifetime. And if it does, it does.
Conspiracy
if humans survived before im pretty sure we will again, just most of the worlds population will die off... cause if it went down to 2,000 before then the population these days might go down to the hundred thousands or millions... maybe even higher, we wont know for a fact till the damn mountain blows
Conspiracy
i just saw the show on t.v and i think if it does blow then we better get ready for a volcanic winter tongue.gif

I'm assuming this would be the appropriate thread for this...

I'm not sure if any of you have been watching T.V. lately, but my house had on the Science Channel today and it ran shows about the Yellow-Stone Park Volcano today all day long. In the show it talked about the most resent activity it had. Scientists are predicting for it to possibly erupt in years to come. It's had a lot of evidence of resent activity which is why they had ran the specials on this channel.

In Yellow-Stone Park is a Super Volcano, not sure if any of you knew that or not but could you imagine this thing blowing up right now? Think about the planetary devastation it would cause. It's even said in the bible as a reference this might be possible, in the many of skepticle prophecies.

It's something to think about...

Just a thought

Matt ~
SilverCougar
Mount Rainier has a higher chance of going off then Yellow Stone first. And Rainier is a couple times bigger then Helens.
Conspiracy
i thought Rainer was just a regular volcano... yellow stone gots the super volcano but i dont think Rainer does...
SilverCougar
No.. it's not super.. but it does have protential to be bigger then Helens was in 80. They have found pieces of it as far as oklahoma and alabama.
AnimangaBloodThorn
Wasn't there a thread somewhere on here about a month ago that said that we were overdue for our 'mass extinction'?
Well, they've been coming up with all of these events that could happen and destroy a large portion of the population. Perhaps they will all happen at approximately the same time, contributing to our mass extinction.

Just a stupid theory over here, go ahead and ignore me.

no i think u got a point there... one mass destruction could cause or trigger more mass destructions concluding to a extinction.. but w.e happens i dont think all human life will go extinct, i think some stragglers will survive and eventually re populate.. like look at the Ceolocanth... it managed to go threw most of the harsh mass extinctions and destructions that ever happened in history so i think we will atleast have some stragglers
AnimangaBloodThorn
There's so many humans in the world that I have no doubt that some will make it through a mass extinction, if we have one. However, I seriously think that the world would change drastically after this. Hopefully, the stragglers would put their heads together and begin to adapt so that they live long enough to repopulate. hmm.gif

Sorry, I've seen too many movies where people are too busy arguing rather than finding solutions.
tongue.gif

Anyway, the world has changed so much in the past decade. There have been more tornados in my area in the past year than the past centry. There are threats of more tsunamis, as well as the ice caps melting. Earthquakes are hitting California so hard that it will eventually rip apart from the US. Volcanos are becoming more active. The weather is changing slightly. Those are only a few examples of some things in my country and other well known things.

I'm not sure of what is going on in other countries though...

That mass extinction thing seems to already be beginning, if you think about it. Everything is changing. Now, I'm not saying that it has begun, or that it ever will begin, but it is something freaky to think about, isn't it?

all that has to happy is a earthquake strong enough to bust the magma chamber for it to go.. rememebr that the volcano is already created there just anytime it can go... just i hope it never does but thats like asking for aliens to assasinate president bush... wont happen.
Demented
I would have to say that the worst part is that up until now, a lot of us had no idea that it could do that much damage. The magnitude of the destruction was astonishing. It makes me wonder what other possible major disasters we are unaware of.
Mr. Blonde
I'm just worried about the ash caving in my house. WITH ME IN IT.
