I like punk stuff, although I don't subscribe to the lifestyle much. Misfits (old and new) are my fave, I also like Damned, The Cramps, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ramones, Devotchkas. I think that the whole 'anarchy/smash the state' thing is a little redundant nowadays, so I really don't listen to the bands with those messages. I do have to say that Sex Pistols are overrated, they were good at the whole shock tactics thing, but as far as musicianship goes, very average.

I was a teeanager in the 80's but that was my punk music too. Add to that Peter and the Test Tube Babies and Angelic Upstarts and you have my faves. PIL was my least favourite though. Joe Strummer was my hero.

Real punk isn't played on the radio IMHO and definitely not M fracking TV. That's nothing but pop-rock.
A couple of my favorties are Atreyu and Ragtime Revolutionaries(which has since changed its name to Deathwish Nine.) Ragtime provided a real treat for me because they did the theme song to one of my favorite cartoon shows, MEGAS XLR. Southern California seems to breed a lot of good punk bands.
I like the Dropkick Murphys, too ... they might be considered punk I guess, some people do.

Ok dude, you probably won't believe me, but my dads cousin was in Stiff Little Finger way before they ever made it big. The used to practise in my great aunts attic. I like them, they are cool, and I have a soft spot for bands from my Home Town.
I love the Sex Pistols and The Clash, The Kinks, The Misfits and old bands like that.

I never thought of telling you. I've told nat enough times, though!
It's not really something I tend to think about, I never even met the guy, but I do remember my great aunt telling me every time Stiff Little Finger is mentioned.

Mar 21 2005, 03:59 PM
actually, now that you mention it, the drummer in my band, his dad was the original drummer for Twisted Sister (I love them too!). Unfortunately I don't have any family links to any bands, although I did live with a former member of Cradle of Filth for a few months.
...back when they were good...

Cradle of Filth are quite big now, aren't they? I read in Kerrang! about the lead singer guy, but I'm not too familiar with them. I must look them up.
Your links are better than mine, I never met this guy I'm talking about, lol!

Got an education from an old roadie who was and still is heavily into Punk
Kennedys was great music to skate too.(in the 80's

)
Yet i never rated the Sex pistols even though they were the "flagship" group. All too contrived.
BUt thank the LAWD for them.they shook things up and change the Music scene.

The Pistols weren't even that good on stage, it was just their whole presence and attitude, it really was what the teenagers were waiting for, and that is what made them amazing, that and their kick ass lyrics.

Read that Filth article again last night, the lead guy Dani or something is the biggest poser ever! I don't mean as in wannabe-poser type, I mean he poses for photographs like a wee model! So funny, it mad me laugh a lot to see this rocker guy with long hair in his typical English house, only the odd skull and creepy things here and there.

Not many, I am more of a rock person. I like hm...Anti-Flag, NoFX, well, that's about it actually. Like I said, I am more of a rock person.
Edit: I listen to the odd ones here and there, but no names come to mind.

Mar 23 2005, 08:39 PM
I like NoFX, the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Kinks...I think I said all those before.
I'm not really a Punk person either, I like a whole mix of rock.

i was a punk when it started.
the ramones were the masters of punk, and saddly are now dying off, jonny, joey, and deedee.
i liked siouxsie and the banshees, hong kong garden, spellbound.
i never considered the clash punk, they were just brilliant, and many of their songs have a ska beat, so for a punk purist, they did not fit the bill.
anyone remember lords of the new church, and the lead singer stiv bators, now there was a prime example of the punk lifestyle, i think the guy died in his 20's.
now i download the odd tune.
saw the ramones in ottawa in 1984, that was LOUD.
i mean you walk out from a lot of concerts with the ears ringing, but that made me deaf for a week.

Jeceris, did you ever see Forgotten Rebels?

Mar 23 2005, 09:10 PM
no dot, never did.
the name rings a bell but i can't remember any of their songs.
did you see them in toronto? how were they? where are they now?
star_child
Mar 23 2005, 09:12 PM
The Clash aren't really 'aggravated' punk, but I love them. And the Kinks were more pop, but they rocked.
jeceris
Mar 23 2005, 09:14 PM
yeah, that's a good way to describe the clash, starchild.
they are one of favourite bands, and rolling stone magazine picked london calling the best album of the 1980's, they were spot on there.
i saw the clash once in toronto, but it was just after strummer had left the band and it just wasn't the clash, if you know what i mean.

Mar 23 2005, 09:18 PM
It's just not the same when band members aren't there. Whether it is a drummer or singer it doesn't matter, you can always tell the difference.
I hate to think what Queen will be like with out Freddie!

Music today sucks so much, it is unbelievable. When was the last decent punk band???
Daughter of the Nine Moons
Mar 23 2005, 09:23 PM
The Forgotten Rebels were a Toronto Punk band. Click on the link you might remember them from the old days. I never saw them but I had some of their albums. Do you remeber the BFG's aka Bunchafuckingoofs aka the Goofs? The used hang around Kensington Market and Queen west.

Mar 23 2005, 09:24 PM
hard to say who was the last good punk band.
nowadays i like bands like radiohead, and muse, and there's some punk undertones to their stuff.
but any punk now is nouveau punk, and won't come close to what started the whole movement.
good discussion on punk, wish i could add more, but i'm shuttin it down at work here, i'll check later to see if anyone still wants to discuss the "ol days"

Have you heard of Baby Shambles or the Libertines? Don't know if they are big were you are, but my uncle was an old 70's punk, and that is the kinda thing he is into now. Quite good, not that punk-y though.

i myself am not into punk. i like more emo and hardcore stuff, which came from punk. i listen to few punk bands every now and then, since none are that good these days. in my opinion, i think punk died when the ramones and the sex pistols took it mainstream. i'm not that big into either band though.
