SAN JOSE, Calif. - A woman's meal at a Wendy's restaurant brought a whole new meaning to the term "finger food." The woman bit into a portion of a human finger while eating a bowl of chili Tuesday night at the San Jose restaurant, Santa Clara County health officials said Wednesday.
The woman, who asked officials not to identify her, immediately spit out the finger and warned other diners to stop eating, witnesses said.
"Initially she did put this object in her mouth and did bite down on it and wasn't sure exactly what it was," Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Martin Fenstersheib said at a news conference. "She's doing OK. Initially she was a bit grossed out it was described to me, and vomited a number of times."
Fenstersheib said the finger had been cooked at a high enough temperature to kill any viruses.
Officials said the fingertip was approximately 1 3-8-inches long and a half-inch piece of fingernail was also found. They believe it belongs to a woman because of the long, manicured nail.
Health investigators seized all of the ingredients at the restaurant and are tracing them back to their manufacturer. They believe the finger got into the chili at an earlier stage.
"We have no evidence of any accident within the employees at the facility itself," said Ben Gale of the Santa Clara County Health Department. "We asked everybody to show us they have 10 fingers and everything is OK there."
The restaurant has had only one minor health violation stemming from a leaky vent, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
"Food safety is of utmost importance to us," Wendy's spokesman Joe Desmond said in a statement. "We are cooperating fully with the local police and health departments with their investigation. It's important not to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy's we plan to do right by our customers."

I would be most unhappy if this happened to me. Just completely sick.

I used to work in a cafe and when slicing the rolled meats I came across a used bandaid compressed in the centre of the roll.
Instead of sending the whole lot back, my scabby manager sent the portion with the bandaid back and used the rest.

now why does that not surprise me tia? i mean really.. they dont think at all some ppl do they? its not like if you send the whole roll back you wont get a replacement..
even when i worked in the food industry, there was some damn dodgy stuff going on... food was prepared and dated to correct standards.. and if by the end of the date all of the food wasnt used, they would just re-date it

As a former manager of a fast food restaurant, I can say that that happens quite often. The company wants to keep costs down on waste, so the mangers are held responsible for keeping their stores food costs at a minimum. Needless to say, quite a few items at the stores are redated. Sometimes twice.

My brother used to work at one of the local resturants. He told me one night, that someone dropped a bunch of chicken breasts on the floor, walked through it, then picked it up and served it. I haven't eaten there since. This is just gross.

Ya i work in a restaurant and most of the workers are good with standards. Managers want to save as much money as possible, but I refuse when its too nasty. Also glad im vegetarian. Only good fast food is subway! (not where i work, maybe i should go over there..)

I worked at a Subway for a bit in college, right on the beach in FL. I still think it's the best job I ever had... even if it wasn't the best paying...
They have these sharp knives... on like the 3rd day I sliced my finger open pretty good... used a chunk of wheat bread to staunch the wound in front of customers heh... no, I didn't try to serve that peice of bread.
but it was alot of blood, was pretty gross, real clean cut
right on the beach... bikinis... woohoo!
and yeah... I like Wendy's chili too... eek. But I think to myself, "self. you'd dip into a bowl of chili with a finger in it for a million bucks." and I don't worry about it so much.

Eh, those picture aren't bad, but then again, maybe I am just immune to it because of the internet...could be.
If I found a finger in my chili, I wouldn't be puking, I'd be doing the happy chicken dance, think of how much money she will get when she hopefully sues them. I think I'm going to go out and get some Wendy's chili!

When I used to live in Nova Scotia, there was a KFC down the street where my friend worked and one day she said someone got a bucket of chicken and they brought it back because there was something gross in it. They sent it to a lab for testing and found out it was a tumor

This is so digusting! I heard about this in our local newspaper. It made big news everywhere I suppose I say whoever got their finger cut off should get charged if they did not file a report about losing a finger. I heard they can still find out who's finger that was due to research.

Blah, Wendy's is just afraid of the lawsuit that is going to be coming. Always easier to blame the victim then to pay them.

It appears to be a hoax, and there is a DNA test going on right now to see if the finger belongs to the claimants deceased aunt.
I have no idea how they got the finger...
Considering that she has sued companies more than 6 times(last I heard), it appears to me that she is doing this to make a living...
My bet is that she ends up going to jail and being sued by Wendys for the economic damage she did to their company.
