I respect these men and women whose modesty is so trivialised (is that a word?!) by the written word of people who weren't alive at that time. (Maybe they are not being modest but it transcribes that way)

I can't express my admiration for those who fight for their country -(it wouldn't come across properly) .
History and rose tinted specs and all that but that generation had a certain way of expressing themselves which I think in today's use of language downplays all the individual acts of bravery which were performed and are still performedby the current serving forces.
