Well theres a guitarist thread so we might as well.
My drama group was going to do an adapted version of one flew over the cuckoos nest, but decided not to.
I most recently was Baby John in an amature production of West Side story. That was awesome. We did it for two nights and sold out on both.

So, is this thread doomed or do we have lots of us on board?

I love Drama. I do it three times a week. I have been going to Drama Classes since I was about 8 years old, so I am pretty serious about it. My school is doing Romeo and Juliet, but I think it is for senior pupils only.

Oh I am a senior pupil, so I can get in for all that stuff now.

I've done theatre all my life.
My most proud moment was playing the main character in a production of Deadwood Dick, a melodrama western.
I played the villian, Blackman Redburn, and let me tell you it was an incredible performance Or three, i should say.
I had to learn to tango, gunfight, everything. It was a riot.

lol, how modest of ye Burnside.
Coolies! We learnt some mild stage-fighting for West Side Story, but my character never used it.

that sounds awsome Burnside! Acting is my passion! theatre is what i plan on majoring in! I've seen this one school do "One flew over.." They were incredible! I was soo pissed when they didn't win UIL! ARRGGG!!!! well anyway. The only REAL play I was in was "Persephone". A greek mythology, romantic comedy. I was Demeter, goddess of the earth. I was the bad guy I guess. I had so much fun! After that I mostly studied theatre, performed in small skits, directed some stuff.

Got any pics or videos?
BurnSide
Apr 7 2005, 07:13 PM
Yes, actually. Not many.
I have a few pictures from Deadwood Dirk, and one from Nortons Dreamworld. That's it though. I can post my Nortons pic later when i get home, the others need to be scanned.
I actually have a video trailer we made for Deadwood Dirk too, which has various scenes from the play and post-production, but i wouldn't be able to get it on the net.

I missed a few plays we did in college.
Small ones.
for 12 weeks we actually pumped out 1 play a week with 10 people. Each week we would have 5 actors, 1 lightguy, 1 sound guy, 1 stage manager, 1 writer/director, one assist. stage manager (assman) and one props/set guy.
It was quite a riot. Really good plays too. You'd think it would be really difficult within a week to write, direct, create, learn lines and direction, etc etc, but it was fairly easy considering the days were 12 hours long.

Our production company was called 'Black Box' because our theatre was completely black, everything from the stage to the backdrops to the seats, all black.
It was great. Black = neutral so we could do whatever we wanted with it.

lol, so any advice for a newbie? Or someone who wants to get involved in a company like that?
BurnSide
Apr 7 2005, 07:48 PM
Yeah. I do.
I dropped out of theatre after a year. No money, no time.
I jumped in head first and didn't really think of what i was getting myself into.
After high school, or secondary school for you i think, take a year to yourself. Do your thing. Work, save some money.
THEN, after a year or so of saving, research. Research every little detail of the profession you're going into. Real theatre is unbelievably different from drama in school. Make sure you know exactly what is to be expected.
And after that, disipline. Being an actor or even having any part in theatre is an extremely hard tiring profession. Sometimes our days went on for 20 hours. We even took our sleeping bags in and slept in class for a few hours at night before getting up early to work some more. You need to be focused, you need to be 100% ready to work, at all times.
Other than that, listen. Listen to your instructor, listen to your comrades. Listening closely is the difference between success and failure in theatre. if you listen correctly, you can accomplish any task you're set.

I am really frustrated in my Drama group, all the silly little firsties all suck, and we are left doing really amateur things, and not actually focusing on the more important aspects of drama.
I think I can audition for Romeo and Juliet this year, I have to ask my drama teachers. All my friends say I should, but I find that play very boring.
BurnSide
Apr 8 2005, 03:16 PM

Bah I agree. Although I like West Side story a lot better than Romeo and Juliet, perhaps just because I find it more relevent.

They probably say the same about you. And plus, with your comment on Romeo and Juliet, could you handle the more important and advanced aspects? Plus, Evreyone starts at the bottom, and if you become a professional actor, THEN I shall listen to you complain about amature stuff.

Screw you.

So? My first show was oliver when I was like 5. I was a drunk in the pub singing that omp-pah-pah song. Doing something for a long while doesnt make you good at it.
QUOTE
How the hell would you know how good or bad I am?
I don't, nor did I say I did. But you seem to have decided that you're
very good.
QUOTE
And how would firsties complain about me being an amateur, when my drama teacher said that I would probably get the top grade in GCSE drama?
Well you seem to have no problem complaining about them. GCSE drama is nothing; You can get an A* with both hands tied behind your back, which is especially good if your peice is about a kidnapping, which we did once. Burnside has already said, Drama in school is
nothing like drama out in the world

Those firsties can't be expected to do GCSE drama, can they?
And I don't like LOVE stories.

I once said to my sister; Going to a drama school outside of school doesnt make you any more talented, it simply means your paying to look like it.
QUOTE

Why can't they? Stage management and theory is very simple at school; its only when you go out and start doing professional stuff or join a company like Burnsides old one that you really need some knowledge on it. And it's mostly just learn as you go. You don't need to know advanced make up to get an A* in drama.

I don't know if I should audition for Romeo and Juliet or not...I have to talk to my drama teachers first. My friends say I should, but I don't know. As I said before, that play bores me, but I don't really mind, a play is a play, and I love drama. If I don't go for this, it will be another 3 yeas before the school does it again.

Well you're only audtioning, you might not even get in yet

But you should try anyhow; besides, love is one of the most fundamental emotions in drama.

Apr 9 2005, 07:01 PM

Oh ok. Let me explain. I do not like myself, I have little self-confidence. But all my friends say I am good, and after a little sketch, strangers and people who absolutely hate me were saying I was good. I don't think so, but hey. My drama teacher says I would probably get an A* on my GCSE drama.
