Just a question that I'd like to get your perspective on guys. Would you agree to have genetically engineered children? No half measures like curing miopia and leaving the rest to chance, I mean fully creating your child to your exact specifications. Like in the film Gattaca where the Genetecist says

"Remember he is still you, only the best of you. You could conceive one thousand times naturally, and never quite get a result such as this..." (in context to a genetically engineered child).

What are your opinions in genetically manipulating YOUR children. Would yo want to endow them with all the best possibilities in life by giving them a head start? I'll get the ball rolling by saying that I would do anything to improve my child's welfare, and thus I would agree to genetically manipulating him in every sense of the word. Tall, fit, strong, healthy, dark, etc. I do not believe in that, "you were not supposed to manipulate what God created" dogma, since it is legal to terminate babies, who the hell is going to tell me that I can't play around with his genes?

p.s. I'm not making this a poll since every attempt on my behalf to do one usually fails, so I'm leaving it as a simple thread. lol laugh.gif

Interesting topic Vox . I would have to say no I wouldn't . One of my children is genetically imperfect but I love him dearly . Speed agillity and hieght are not the only things that make a person great . My son reads at 2 years above his age level he does maths and english a year ahead of his age group and he is the kindest sweetest most unique being . My youngest boy on the other hand has hieght , agillity and speed from his fathers side I might ad . I like the differences in them it makes them special . Imagine what I could have missed out on If I had them made to order .
As a side note I read a story once where a link was shown between artistic abillity and a disfunctional up bringing . It seems every down side has it's ups . smile.gif

That is the only flaw within the eugenecist's camp in my opinion Kismet. If we are too try and eliminate all these discrepancies, we will alienate all others who possess them. That is why for example, even though I would never even dream of bringing up this topic in a thread within this forum, the following example exemplifies what I am trying to point out. I believe it is wrong for a couple and especially doctors to terminate a pregnancy when the sole reason for its termination may be as an example that the child has down syndrome. I believe that it is a gross disrespect to every human that has down's syndrome. Note that I am NOT trying to start an abortion debate, so please DO NOT post anything on this thread that might resemble a pro-choice/pro-life stance. However when it comes to my child, I do want the best for him, so I would try to wipe out as many of SOCIETY'S negative traits, so that he doesn't have to live with a stigma, since it is not the life I would want to choose for him/her. I realise the hypocrisy behind my statement, but when it comes to my offspring let the rules fly out of the window.

How sweet Vox smile.gif now if we were to be talking about being able to add X-men like qualities to our kids . Then heck yeah !! My son Magneto who would be able to draw the T.V. remote to him with little or no effort . Now theres a funky idea. biggrin.gif
