user posted image rTime may indeed be on your side. If you can just last another quarter century.By then, people will start lives that could last 1,000 years or more. Our human genomes will be modified to include the genetic material of microorganisms that live in the soil, enabling us to break down the junk proteins that our cells amass over time and which they can’t digest on their own. People will have the option of looking and feeling the way they did at 20 for the rest of their lives, or opt for an older look if they get bored. Of course, everyone will be required to go in for age rejuvenation therapy once every decade or so, but that will be a small price to pay for near-immortality.This may sound like science fiction, but Aubrey de Grey thinks this could be our reality in as little as 25 years.

Other scientists caution that it is far from clear whether and for how long science can stall the inevitable. De Grey, a Cambridge University researcher, heads the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS) project, in which he has defined seven causes of aging, all of which he thinks can be dealt with. (Senescence is scientific jargon for aging.) De Grey also runs the Methuselah Mouse prize for breakthroughs in extended aging in mice. The purse of the M Prize, as it is called, recently grew beyond $1 million.

25 years it will be available...5 years later it should be affordable to every day folk.

Who doesnt want immortality ! lol

well... A small minority of people as he said. Mostly religious people im guessing.

You can just look at all the old people opting for surgery to make them look younger and all the people taking vitamins. Of course demand for this kind of thing is going to be HUGE!. Politicians / Parties will get elected over this kind of stuff.

Im only 20 years old. Im almost certain it will happen in my life time original.gif

Aubrey has been interviewed on national TV a few times. Also some other video interviews that you can watch here.

I will be 40 in 25 years.

Once im 40 will I be able to look 20 with this immortality thing, or not?

I see no problems really, if we can get immortality... we will be able to colonize Mars, if we can colonize Mars, we won't be overpopulated. Then we will move on to Galaxy Wars blink.gif

Wasn't the oldest person 131? Or something past 25 years....Then they died.
RaginCajun
i don't care too look young when i am 50 years old. what i do care is that i live for another 200 years. talk about that then i will be happy.
pallidin
Do not even think that an immortality drug/technique will be freely dispensed and available.
Our earth simply does not have the resources to provide for everyone living 1000 years old and producing 100 children on top of that.
LunarWarrior
I wouldn't want to be imortal or anything near it. I don't even want to be living with machines pumping my heart, feeding me, and breathing for me. You gotta settle down and realize death in inevidable. Cowards run and hide from it, but you cannot excape. Sorry but like pallidin stated we dont have the room as it is(well actually we do have the room, with enough space to grow food for everyone, but people are greedy and thousands starve daily because of this), with life expectancies around 80.
QueenoftheNight
I wouldn't mind living that long, but I would prob. kill myself or stop the treatment when I feel I have achomplished what I needed to in life, or when I start to forget my past memories when I was a child.
AztecInca
The human race is not yet ready for such a treatment, our resources are already spread far too thin, with everyone living for soooo long, the planet and society itself could not cope!
Saying thata there is nothing wrong with developing it or using it eventually, but until we are caapable fo sustaining such a large population that just keeps on growing this treatment will be more fo a burden than a gift!

Resources are definitely a problem when people aren't dieing and are still consuming. I have heard of a talk of having a prize contest just like the X-Prize and the M-Prize for an economical renewable energy source that will make us independent from oil. This will also be needed for us to make that transition to immortality. The X-Prize was great to watch and we need more commerical enterprises into space. I don't want to sound like some conspiracy theorist but I don't believe that governments ever have the best interest of the people.

All wars have been fought over resources, usually land. Some might think that a lot of the wars were over religion, but when you look at it closely, religion was just used as a motivator to get people to fight for a resource. The Crusades was to get Greece and Turkey back under Christian control (over the resources). Right now we are having wars over oil. More people consuming means less resources. We definitely need to solve the energy and resource crisis in a hurry before we start becoming immortal even though I am wanting this sooner than 25 years. I'll be 60 in 25 years.

Over coming your fear of death is easy. But how many tried to overcome their fear of living forever thumbsup.gif

All therapies are likely to be in place in 25 years. That is also not reying on any NANOTECHNOLOGY - Which has huge potential. Aubrey is concerntrating on what he knows and not relying on anything else to save the day. Therapies will come along within the 25 years at different times. But we might need all 7 to fix aging.

There are many diciplins In science that will meet in the next few years.. infact its already happening. So there are plenty of efforts going on.

With the current rapid breakthroughs happening everyday in the fields of Biotechnology and Nanotechnology I dont believe resources will become a problem. Also as there are more healthier people on the planet than frail. They will contribute too, so they will be very productive. We could actually increase output.

Centenarian takes computer course at the age of 100 !

At the age of 100 most people would think about winding down rather than downloading - but not Sidney Platt.
Mr Platt has embarked on his latest information technology course - at Havering College, east London - so he can better manage his finances.

A former fencer and tennis player, he piloted a plane when he was 92.

He attributes his longevity to regular exercise and to eating a bowl of porridge every morning. Mr Platt has a daughter of 65 and a son of 72.

Tips and shortcuts

Mr Platt said: "I started using computers on the old Amstrad system so I've seen some really big changes over the decades.

"I have learnt lots of little tips and shortcuts on the computer that most people don't know.

"I enjoy going to the centre because I always get a lovely smile from the ladies there and I can impress them with new computer tips."

Mr Platt, who turned 100 in March, has been studying computer courses at the college's Romford campus for five years.

He has a Level 1 certificate, covering spreadsheets, word processing and databases and is working towards a Level 2 certificate involving more advanced skills.

Porridge is the secret to a long life. I have it in the morning and it's the best start to the day

Sidney Platt

Mr Platt speaks German, French and Italian and plays the piano.

He said: "There is always something new to learn and I have found learning new computer skills has kept me up-to-date with all the new technology."

Of his long life, he added: "The key is lots of exercise and I have had plenty of it in my life.

"I used to play tennis and fence and I even piloted a plane at the age of 92.

"Porridge is also the secret to a long life. I have it in the morning and it's the best start to the day."

IT centre manager Monica Irvine said: "He is one of the trail blazers of the centre.

"We would call him an advanced computer user. He's an amazing character and a real inspiration to others."

Mr Platt said: "I didn't think it was anything special to reach 100 years old - lots of people are reaching 100 .

"But I'm told even if that's true, there aren't many 100-year-old IT students."

I hope we see more of this in the coming decades thumbsup.gif

Except looking a bit younger at the age of 100 lol

Don't get me wrong - This is a great idea!

But what WILL we do about reasources?

However, when that problems aside for whatever reason, man, that's a great idea! thumbsup.gif

I just hope they can solve a lot of diseases and reinforce our immune system so we can live a lot and in good condition, I'd like to live much more years but with health otherwise I would prefer to die.

Well, nanotechnology does have a lot of potential. Alcor Life-Extension Foundation is into neuro- and cryo- preservation (neuro is easier, cheaper, and should be more reliable and of better quality).

Anyway, Alcor.org

According to the bible, no one will live past the age of 120. So immortality is impossible. It defeats the purpose of living

Life extension is about adding healthy years of life. There is no point in adding frail life because its dangerous and frail dont last very long. Rejunvation is about keeping you at a young age of around 20-30
whoa182
watch the exploring life extension video in my signiture at the bottom. its only a short piece.
