What do you mean? What kind of situation are you reffering too? Giving your life for someone else is the greatest gift someone can give. Jesus said "There is no greater gift then for a man to give up his life for his friends."

I wouldn't think so. But who knows maybe so. Guess it depends on which religion you believe in. huh.gif

No it isn't. In fact one might be rewarded for altruism. But I say out of 100 million people only one person is purely altruistic.

In any case it takes a very unselfish person to do something like that, Religion or no Religion. This type of person is a true friend.

Where in the Bible does it say this?
mako
It's there Zandore, but it actually says something like, "Greater love hath no man than he lay down his life that others may live." yes.gif A nice little verse, although it shows up in Chinese, Indian, and Persian holy wiritng 1000 years before Jesus supposedly said it. Still, this is not the question, is suicide a sin even if it is to save another. Not believing in sin (a bogus construct of the Hebrew temple state to keep its subjects in line), I would say that it has no meaning, but for those of you that believe, I have to agree with PaperTiger, it would not be a sin, but instead a blessing (shocked you didn't I, PaperTiger). yes.gif

I will take your word on it Mako. thumbsup.gif
The mark of a true friend is one that will put their (She/He grin2.gif ) life on the line for those that they are close with.

PS. In the context of Religion no it is not a sin.

Yes I too beleive that the greatest sacrafice is your own life for another. cuz it does take a very unselfish person to give up his own life for another. Whether that another be a friend or stranger. So yes, I beleive God rewards good acts and such a act as that would be given great reward and that reward is a first class ticket into heaven. original.gif

Only if you believe in God.

right, only if u believe in God... but on subject... jesus did say that, and mako, i thought it was the catholic's that "changed" the bible to control people... hearing too many stories.. brain cant hold them all... AAAAAHHH... but to give ur life so someone can live... a great deed... yes... and a great reward will u get in heaven... purely unselfish and pure love for another being... such love... very great deed...

Surely the sin is that you are taking your life because you don't want it anymore.

It's hard to imagine a situation in which you would commit suicide, in the sense of the word used in previous discussions, to benefit another.

This would presumably be more about sacrifing your life for the good of another.

(I wonder if this thread will be closed).

pretty sure that the thread isnt about killing urself, but about laying your life and sacrificing urself to save another life... like the secret service does for the president... along those lines...

Hi everyone,

I hate to be Captain Letdown here, but I think that with all of the other suicide threads that have been closed (many times before), this is just another facet of the same idea and going to lead into the same type of endless bickering that the other threads contained.

I am going to close this thread and respectfully ask that people refrain from creating the same topic(or variations thereof) repeatedly after it has been closed by a mod; thank you for undertsanding.

On a related note:

I am not sure who generated the first threads about suicide or if this is even needed, but I would hope that anyone seriously giving thought to the idea would seek out professional help from qualified medical people rather than getting feedback from a forum full of people...good people, but not quite qualified to help in such an area...
