LONDON (Reuters) - A 15-year-old girl has trekked across an Arctic island quicker than her father - one of Britain's top explorers.

Alicia Hempleman-Adams took 10 days to walk and ski 150 miles across Baffin Island in north-east Canada.

Her father, David, 48, who won fame by reaching both the South and North Poles on foot, setting a series of air-balloon records and climbing the highest mountain on every continent, had previously taken 11 days.

"It's a double-edged sword," he said. "I'm immensely proud of what she has achieved, but a bit miffed she has beaten my time," he told Reuters from a hotel in Canada.

Alicia and her three companions had to battle a wind chill factor of minus 40C, thin ice and open water along the trek.

But this will not necessarily mean the start of a career in exploration, she said. "I want to try other things first."

Good for her. My 15 year old daughter put a new water pump on her 5.0 Ford all by herself!

Wow. I'm 15, and what have I done that my dad couldn't?
I'll come back to this thread once I think. laugh.gif

Why does she have her own car at her age?
When I first read the topic title I thought it would be about domestic violence. Then when I read the first few words I had an image of an angry girl walking quickly through the Arctic and literally beating her father. happy.gif

She's in collage now, but I had a 70 Fairlane and she was getting her permit so I gave her a car. I tought her good. She did alot of sanding on the body and we had it painted her choice. Purple. She was a cheerleader in highschool with a purple 70 Ford Fairlane. I'm a cool guy.

I'm jealous! I didn't accomplish anything like that when I was 15. The only thing I accomplished was getting a bad case of acne. tongue.gif

The best is yet to come for you. You can do anything. Just being here is a good sign of superior intellect.

And she doesn`t even want to start a career in exploring. I bet beating her dad made it more worthwhile then actually completing the journey!
