It's downright annoying to come across a broken link on the Web.
Two researchers at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln tracked so-called link rot after they discovered that hyperlinks disappeared before they finished developing distance education courses.
The study, "Broken links: The ephemeral nature of educational WWW hyperlinks," will be published in the Journal of Science Education and Technology in June.
"Everyone says, 'Yes, yes, we all know they disappear,'" said John Markwell, a professor of biochemistry at the school. "We didn't know anyone who had actually monitored the loss."
