A 15-year-old boy who allegedly took a Melbourne tram on a 15km joy ride has been charged with nine new offences, including stealing a bus and the attempted theft of a train.

Police today arrested the boy at his Sunshine home and he was later bailed to appear in court in June to answer the further charges.

The new charges are theft of a bus and bus keys, theft of a bundle of public transport tickets, criminal damage, attempted theft of a train and theft of train keys, and three counts of unlawfully being on premises.

The new charges pre-date Sunday's escapade, when the boy allegedly stole a tram from the Southbank depot and drove it for 40 minutes to east suburban Kew, picking up passengers on the way, before being arrested about 9.30pm.

He was also charged on Monday with stealing a tram from Southbank on Friday, which he later dumped in Port Melbourne.

Police now allege he first got behind the controls of a tram on April 10, when he drove a vehicle in the Southbank yard and hit another tram, causing $2,000 damage.

About midday the day before, he allegedly jumped the fence of bus depot in west suburban Footscray, and drove a bus inside the depot.

The same day, he went to a rail yard in North Melbourne where he got into a diesel and tried but failed to start it and took the train's keys.

The boy was charged on Monday with nine offences, including two counts each of theft of trams and conduct endangering life, and was bailed to appear at the Victorian Children's Court on June 20.

How do you really steal a train and get away with it? Its not like you can turn off at the next exit and hide it...
_Nyx_
yeah really...sounds like some lax security is to blame

Lol Kratos!

Yeah. Tis bad. Whats youth comeing to? What happened to stealing sports cars and speed boats?
henpeck69
Yep. Some crappy security. You would think someone would have noticed a train or bus missing.

Sounds like the boy had a thing for big vehicles. Shrugs..IF i were to steal one, it would be something worth stealing.

I'm still laughing at the fact that he picked up passengers along the way after stealing the tram! tongue.gif

I know, he picked them up along the route and asked them where they wanted to go!

laugh.gif The kid's a born tram driver! Instead of putting him in jail or fining him, they'd ought to send him off to learn how to drive the things correctly. Get him a license and he'll have a good job that he's happy with instead of being a delinquent. original.gif

Reminds me of Mad Windham, a British nobleman in the nineteenth century who lost his family fortune but spent the happiest years of his life driving a train for a tiny paycheck. original.gif

The kid seems to have a mental problem as such, and cant control his desire to drive these vehicles. he was caught each time, I think..... He wants to be a tram driver when hes older, the police cheif supports the fact he should be allowed to be one, despite these actions...
