The following (first two) pictures are of a guy who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded his 7mm Mag Semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head. The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6" high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world.
Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport (to remind tourist's of the risks involved when in the wild). Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours. His last meal was the unlucky nature buff in the third picture.
The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-calibre pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol was the remains of the hiker.
The other body has not been found.
Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots they ultimately found four 38 calibre slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body) it only wounded the bear and probably angered it. The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.
Think about this - If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's belly button when he stood upright, the bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours!
To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows. You're both partly right. Snopes says that the bear in the photo didn't kill anyone (that they know of, anyway), and was shot by hunters. Although Kodiaks are fairly well-established in nature, and no one would miss one, they had a right to hunt it. Personally I would think a bear that big would have no qualms digesting a stray hiker or two some day. But yeah, you can't really do anything with bear meat, so I wouldn't have killed it. *I can just my hubby coming home with a trailer hitched to the back of his car with that thing tied to it. I would be SO mad!! LOL*
The pics of the *ahem* remains were not caused by the bear. Bleh, nevertheless.
~Scarlet~
PS. The Buffalo Science Museum (in NY) has a Kodiak on display that I always remember seeing. It's about 10 feet tall (though it's in a case about 2 feet off the ground, so it looks taller), and I just remember it looking like it could break through the glass and rip you open with its huge claws! It was a scary lookin' bear.

Too bad the bear didn't chase him or act aggressive in anyway. The whole first post is just part of an email urban legend (which several people have already beaten me to). In fact the bear hadn't been doing anything but hanging out and being a bear. Gosh, what a good reason to shoot something!
I'm sorry trophy hunting just makes me madder than about anything else.

No matter the accuracy of the details at least the bear itself is real..And that suckers big enough to be Megafauna,
And while I don't agree with trophy hunting, if something that large charged me I'd unload too..

Yeah, IF it did, I completely agree with defending yourself, but this bear didn't do anything like that. He was killed for the heck of it AND then had some story concocted to give people an even worse idea of bears.

True enough. On the complete opposite end of this spectrum we have my wifes' grandfather who had a bear accidently crash through his picture window while it was trying to get at his birdfeeder..
Now he has at least two guns in the house, but instead of that he rushed to the door and opened it and then hotffoted it upstairs until the bear left on it's own. If someone can forgive a bear for trespassing in thier house, then I guess I don't see why they can't be allowed to roam the woods unmolested..

Fella, read the links that are posted with REAL story. The bear didn't even see the guy or his hunting companion, let alone threaten them. The story at the beginning is just made up to be sensational and scare people about bears.
(love the Man With No Name pic, by the way. Clint...

guys,i have never shot a gun or went hunting ever, but i understand why hunting is allowed.if we did'nt keep the population of animals in check, them there would be more attacks and accidents between animals and humans.by allowing hunting,we keep the interactions to the bare minimum.i'm glad you like the pale rider foto,i'll
think of you whenever i look at it.

You know, if we hadn't decimated the predator species, we wouldn't have to worry about keeping populations in check, nature would handle it on its own.
Sigh...I'm sorry to keep harping on this...it is just a touchy subject for me.
