It was actually built by the Canadian's. This was the small version there was a bigger one too. The bigger version was never fully built but was very impressive.
There were other "disc" shaped aircraft built around this time. The US had a couple of test aircraft that were propeller driven.

The avro aerocar was a joint venture between Canada and USA. They sank millions of dollars into the concept and found it unfeasible then canceled Avro altogether. But not really they revived Avro with a development of one of the first real fighter jets that they eventually base the f-15 and f-18 fighters after but just before they unveiled their prototype they canceled avro again. But not really again. Avro went into the world of black projects in America in name only and has been doing cutting edge aeronautics ever since some people think it may have morphed into the Aurora project coupled with the science brought from Germany after ww2, uhhhh at least thats what i heard.(ps don't ask for sources because i picked this info up bit by bit over the years and put it together. Its not 100% but i trust the stuff i've read

I have saucers at home... when i throw them they fly. I think it has something to do with the shape... so my question is why the government is spending millions of dollars on building a glorified dinner plate?

So all they need is a giant Frizzbee and a giant arm to fling it where it needs to go?
I wouldn't want to be the passinger, you wouldn't be a pilot because you'd have no control.
