N-Sider has exclusive details on the next Game Boy (not the Nintendo DS, mind you), the Game Boy Evolution, and the next version of the GameCube, the GameCube Next.

No pics of either, of course, but the Game Boy Evolution won’t be out until 2006 and is supposed to have a flip-top design similar to that of the Game Boy Advance SP, and will use mini-discs rather than cartridges (sounds sorta like the PlayStation Portable), have graphics quality like that of the Sega Dreamcast, built-in Bluetooth for wireless multiplayer gaming, and will be backwards-compatible with older Game Boy games, though it sounds like since it uses a disc you’ll have to download the games onto the Game Boy Evolution’s internal memory using some sort of adapter.

Next Generation Game Boy

We don’t have any specific numbers for the next Game Boy, but we’ve got plenty of information nonetheless. Do note, this isn’t information about the DS. The next Game Boy will supposedly launch some time in 2006.

The working title is "Game Boy Evolution".
The system will have a flip-top design, similar to the GBA SP.
Games will come on mini-discs, as opposed to cartridges.
The graphics will be slightly better than those found on the Sega Dreamcast.
Bluetooth wireless networking will be built in.
The system will feature backwards compatibility, but not in the same way the GBA plays old Game Boy games. Supposedly there will be a device that will allow you to download games from their carts into a harddrive-like element of the new Game Boy. Confusing, yes, but that's all we've managed to gleam. Speculate as you like.
The system's screen will be lit, similar to the GBA SP.

Then there’s the GameCube Next. N-Sider actually lists two different sets of specs for the GameCube Next, it doesn’t sound like Nintendo has settled on one configuration or the other yet. Both are listed as having 15GB hard drives and using high-capacity blue laser optical discs which can store a lot more than today’s regular DVDs, and the actual design of the console is supposed to echo the Nintendo 64 rather than the original GameCube.

GameCube Next

Now, a bit of clarification is necessary here. We have two sets of specs to talk about. Supposedly Nintendo has two sets of benchmark specifications they're working with, and one will be chosen when they are closer to actual development. We'll talk about both in the analysis.

System 1:

2.7 Ghz PowerPC G5 Processor
512 Megs total Ram (128 for video, 64 for sound)
600 Mhz graphics chip
System 2:

Dual 1.8 Ghz IBM G5 PowerPC processors
256 Megs DDR Main memory (64 dedicated to sound, using a 7.1 sound system at 196 Khz)
128 Megs GDDR3 Video memory
500 Mhz graphics chip (ATI developed, 16 Pixel Pipe, 220 Million transistors)
Shared Information:

Built in 15 Gigabyte harddrive
Blue-laser disk technology
Potential DVD playback
Case design philosophy more like the N64, less like the GameCube

Why bring out the DS this year and then the evolution just over a year later, I would think they would wait longer especially with the Revolution set to be released in 06 as well!

I guess they are going all out to take back the market share Microsoft and Sony have taken away from them.

Good luck to them!
TaintedDoughnuts
here's a site which keeps up with not only the nintendo revolution, but xbox 2, ps3, and gameboy evolution

think of all the possibilities too, if that video were real... two player races in your own bedroom, or in a battlefield- type game, the host sets up a web cam in their room and youll have 32-64 people blowing each other up in their own room!

Wow. The name alone got me excited about the new Nintendo system....but that video w00t.gif That was soooo awesome. Holy crap, I can't wait to see it.

Someone said that the reason why nintendo is doing so much was to take back the market that was taken from them. Sadly, the only way I think it could be taken back is by using violence in games. sad.gif Hopefully I am wrong and Nintendo reclaims its videogame glory gunsmilie.gif

Ah yes, poor nintendo with the kiddy tag they are labelled with just becasue they have a large number of games appealing to the younger demographics of society. They have always had many mature and adult games but people just associate them with kiddy games, but even their games aimed at kids are of a very good quality. But if they are to shake off that tag not only will they need a revolutionary console but sadly quite a few violent and adult orientated games.

So I guess its gonna use the same size disks as on the gamecube now

I've really got out of console gaming thiese past few months what with having less time to play due to getting a job. When I first heard about the DS, I thought I wouldnt definately get one but I decided not to bother because I wouldn't get the value out of it. The only thing I'm waiting for now is Killer 7 and The Legend of Zelda = Ownage!

I'll probably get a Revolution when it comes out, if it's not too expensive and there'll be some decent games and they won't just rely on their heavy hitters like Mario, Metroid and Zelda...

or it could be like a computer disc tray, and have a spot for gamecube discs... but knowing nintendo theyl either: 1) have cartridges or 2) make "innovative" square discs tongue.gif
AztecInca
lol! Knowing nintendo they may just hace octagonal discs!
rossyair1
Holy crap!!!!

Does the Nintendo Revolution project images out into the envirement and then u control them ?! Or was I looking at the video wrong ?

Heres a little info I stumbled upon!

Big things to come in small package

Nintendo, the world leader in video game innovation, stated loud and clear that they are not to be overlooked in the next generation home console race with the revelation of several unique features of the company's next console system, code name Revolution, to key media outlets. According to the early information, Revolution will combine powerful technology and gaming-focused features in Nintendo's smallest home game console yet.

In its final form, Revolution will be about the thickness of three standard DVD cases and only slightly longer. The versatile Revolution will play either horizontally or vertically, allowing the user total flexibility in setting up a gaming session wherever they have a television.

Thanks to Nintendo's hardware development partners IBM and ATI, the small system will be packed with power that will enable it to wow players with its graphics. Nintendo's legions of loyal fans will be happy to learn that Revolution will be backward compatible, playing both Nintendo GameCube 8cm disks along with its own 12cm optical disks in the same self-loading media drive.

In the next generation, the addition of the Internet will be important to all consoles and particularly important to Nintendo. Revolution will be wireless Internet ready out of the box.

There's much more to Revolution that will be revealed over the coming months, but the combination of its compact size, wireless Internet, backward compatibility, quick start-up time and quiet, low-power operation add up to the start of a great game system. Get ready for the Nintendo Revolution in 2006!
