Two Star Wars TV series will follow the latest movie in the hit film franchise, director George Lucas has said.

Animated show Clone Wars, currently broadcast as three-minute episodes, will become "a 3D animated" series of 30-minute shows, he said.

It would be followed by a live-action series featuring characters from the six Star Wars movies, he added.

"We're probably not going to start that for about a year," he told a Star Wars convention in Indianapolis.

'Step away'

The latest Star Wars film, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, is released in the US on 16 May and the UK on 19 May.

The Clone Wars "micro-series" has had 25 three-minute episodes on Cartoon Network, taking the story up to Revenge of the Sith.

Mr Lucas told the Celebration III convention the live action TV series would be similar to Raiders of the Lost Ark spin-off The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

"Like on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, we want to write all the stories for the entire first season all at once," he said.

Star Wars creator George Lucas said the sixth film would be the last

"I'm going to get it started, and hire the show runners and all of that, then I'll probably step away."

He said the live action series would feature stories taking place between movie episodes three and four - Revenge of the Sith and the original 1977 Star Wars movie.

Lucas said he "never considered" extending the Stars Wars story beyond episode six - Return of the Jedi.

"To be very honest with you, I never ever thought of anything that happened beyond episode six," he said.

"It's the Darth Vader story. It starts with him being a young boy and it ends with him dying. I never ever really considered ever taking that particular story further."

Mr Lucas said the live action series would feature some existing Star Wars characters - but would not elaborate.

"There's a lot of issues that are connected, but you won't necessarily see a lot of the people that are connected," he said.

Empire favourite

No broadcast dates for either series have been announced.

More than 30,000 fans attended the convention. Away from Star Wars, Mr Lucas added a fourth Indiana Jones movie was "definitely in the works".

Meanwhile, The Empire Strikes Back has been named the favourite Star Wars movie in a poll of more than 40,000 readers of film magazine Empire.

Han Solo was voted the favourite hero, Chewbacca was top alien and X-wing pilot Wedge Antilles was favourite minor character.

That is pretty neat... I probably wont end up watching it, but its still cool nevertheless

Although it will be strange not seeing star wars as a movie it will probably end up being awesome and I definately will have a look at at least one or two episodes.
Paranoid Android
I dunno. I don't really like what George Lucas did with the Episode 1-2. It may just be a cheap money making ploy. but bring it on, the star wars fans (ie me) will probably watch it even if the content wouldn't be fit for a dog's breakfast grin2.gif

Edit - had to edit to change my post. Episode 3 kicked. Ep's 1 and 2 still suck tho.

Chewie voted as favorite alien?! That's dumb... People should vote on Nien Nunb, he's cooler. I see the Wedge thing though, he's awesome.

I was beginning to think I was more nuts than I think I am! tongue.gif
Back around when #5 came out I seen a special and thought I heard about 7-9 but no one else that I have talked to seems to know anything about it.

I think I have read just about every Star wars book there is. There are several that would make good movies.
AffinityForEvil
I cant wait to see the shows. It wont make up for fast lane and other good shows now lost but i hope they are good.

i was never into star trek, but i think if star wars came out as a series i would watch it.. i hope they start from the begining again because i really dont no the story at all!!
nick_fury
I think its sad lucas feels it necessary to dilute his franchise further, as he did with the dire 'young indiana jones chronicles' star wars is a brilliant 6 part film saga, lets leave it at that please george!!!

I won't say this again....

THERE IS NO EPISODE 7 - 9!... if a script was drafted it doesn't fit in anymore...

If they were to make episodes 7 - 9 it would all be adaptations from the books as the story line between ROTJ and Truce at Bakura basically flows through... hell... it starts off with Wedge and Luke flying through the Death Star debris looking for survivors but they end up finding some weird crystal and then thats when the Ssi-Ruuk come into play...

now if they did do an adaptation of the books it would be best if the did the New Jedi Order series with the Yuuzhon Vong... many things they did it that sereis were like WOW!

*Edit*

I began reading the script for episode 7.... about oh.... one line in and it flops.... it states they are 30 years after Endor.... well the books are they're right now and they are fighting Yuuzhon Vong.... Anakin is dead.... and umm... yeah.... they just wouldn't work anymore.... but with a few twists and turns they could.....

Excellente. I hope that he doesn't put any love scenes in these shows, otherwise it's episode 2 all over again tongue.gif

I'd like to see the Sith/Jedi war that the Knights of the Old Republic games are based on that occured 1000 years before the movies turned into an anime trilogy. A good studio like Gonzo could make a fantastic anime movie trilogy, especially if the visuals are treated realistically like Ghost in the Shell (as below).
