Full Version: "Bloop" Recorded by U.S. Navy

A mysterious recording, picked up by "spy sensors" put in place by the U.S. Navy in the 1960's, has recently been made public. Dubbed "Bloop" by scientists, the unidentified sound is similar to those made by marine animals. Bloop, however, is larger than any known animal.

One theory is that Bloop is a giant squid. This animal has never been observed in the wild, although dead squid have been found washed up on beaches. Including its tentacles, the largest dead squid on record measured 60 feet.

Marine biologists have disputed this theory, explaining that since squid lack a gas-filled sac, they have no way of making that type of noise.

The identity of Bloop remains an unsolved mystery.

i was just curious to know if anything like this has happened more recently, anyone know?

How big was the bloop and where did it take place?

Here's another article about it at CNN.com.

Bloop

I hoped that there would be more to that story than just a large bloop. I believe there are many animals in the ocean that are yet to be discovered, some of which are probably very large. It would be cool to find out that it was Megaladon or something cool like that.
Fable
It's the only one that I know of offhand. Come to think about it though, it is surprising that something else of this nature has not surfaced. Since it is a good possibility that it's a new creature, it can't be just a single event that no one ever hears again. Maybe the 'bloop' has happened again, and just not made known to the public eye yet.

I think it's more likely to be a natural sound as they hinted at towards the end of that CNN article.

i dont think megalodon would make a 'bloop' noise tongue.gif but it is probably some large marine animal that is surfacing for a bit, maybe thats why we never see large animals...? they only surface really at night so they dont get seen disgust.gif

It was a whale fart. hmm.gif
robloc93
LMAO,Wood! I actually heard the"bloop" on Animal X when they were discussing sea creatures. It sounds just the way its pronounced. They also played different recordings from other large sea animals such as whales and demonstrated the differences.
Xoisk el Soņador
that would creep me out...one of the great lakes in the US (lake erie) creeps me out
Undefined_innocence
Everyone's always talking about animal X... i think ill have to start watching it now. I want to hear the BLOOP.
MJB222
Bloop?!? When you put it that way, I imagined a huge jello creature. laugh.gif

I once read about a squid of 200 metres in length...

Giant creatures are cool but it doesn't surprise me. I hope that there are HUMONGOUS creatures way beyond our minds w00t.gif but now I'm dreaming, I hope not... no.gif

You never know. The possibilities of what is in the oceans are limitless. More than anything though I think it's just really hard to comprehend. To me, the sheer size of a blue whale is overwhelming. Imagine something much larger.
pontiuspd
ever thought about intelligent creatures in the ocean?
we know more about the space than the deep sea.
there are millions of different species down there and we only know perhaps ,
it could be something like a language for this species to contact with each other. this species would be really old
TaintedDoughnuts
maybe a hybird whale, like the mix of a humpback and a blue whale?
