For me It would have to be either Ian Pertwee or Tom Baker.
The doctors after Baker seemed to lose touch with the role that is untill the newest doctor.
Jon Pertwee was the Doctor when I was a small kid so for me he will always be the definitive Doctor and that's who I've voted for (or should that be, that's the Who I've voted for?). Some of the early Tom Baker was excellent but towards the end of his tenure I felt he played the role to much for laughs.
Sylvester McCoy had potential. He was eccentric enough to be a good Doctor but unfortunately got the job at a time when the BBC was trying to kill the series off.
Christopher Ecclestone was excellent and, judging by the Christmas special, David Tennant is going to be a worthy succesor. I'm looking forward to the news series which starts in the UK on Saturday.
Of course I could have attempted to cause confusion by saying that I thought Richard Hurndall was the best Doctor.
I met Tom Baker once, at a book signing. He is one of the most eccentric and charismatic humans I have ever met. If you get a chance to read his autobiography then do so. It is hilarious in places.
