The Library at Alexandria was built by Ptolemy, a general of Alexander the Great.
It supposedly held "the knowledge of the known world". In other words it had lots of books/writings by philosophers such as Plato, Socrates, Herodotus, Homer etc..
But it was burnt down between the second and fourth centuries AD (possibly by Julius Ceasar) and all the works were destroyed.
It isn't really known what was held there but there could have been a lot of important/fascinating stuff.
Some poeple think that it was destroyed by Christians trying to erase all pagan teachings/writings, so it could have contained copies of The Dead Sea Scrolls/ Nag Hammadi Scrolls or something like them.

that is really interesting, can you tell me more please?? also what is the Nag Hammadi Scrolls, and what were the scrolls of alexandria?
Blake2kuk
May 3 2005, 10:18 AM
I don't know what the scrolls of Alexandria were but the Nag Hammadi scrolls are a collection of 13 gnostic books/codices containing 55 texts that were found in Egypt in 1945.
The texts in the Nag Hammadi Library date from the first two or three centuries of the Christian era and primarily represent previously lost or unknown Christian sacred writings – writings often described as "Gnostic" in character. Notably included among the texts was an edition of the Gospel of Thomas, a text perhaps older than the four known canonical gospels.

It was considered to be the tallest man made structure of its time.It is said that the mysterious mirror of the lighthouse could reflect the light tens of kilometers away. Legend says the mirror was also used to detect and burn enemy ships before they could reach the shore.
The idea of a Lighthouse was conceived and initiated by Ptolemy, but was completed after his death by his son. Detailed calculations for the structure and its accessories were carried out at the Alexandria Library. For centuries, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos Lighthouse, was used to mark the harbor, using fire at night and reflecting sun rays during the day. It was even shown on Roman coins, just as famous monuments are depicted on currency today.
Out of the seven wonders of the Ancient world, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was the only one which had a practical use. Also, out of the six vanished wonders, it was the last to disappear.

iirc, the library at alexandria was the storehouse of all knowledge in the ancient world,
that included all the maps of the world and all the mathematics known to man as well as everything intelligent that had ever been written by anybody of note.
allegedly
To start with the christians moved in there in the 4th century and burned anything they didn't like the look of and called it heretical, after all if sailors knew there were other lands then people would flee christian persecution in droves.
theres a legend that it was the turks who burnt everything but its a legend penned by a christian bishop so its hardly valid.
there was a annexe to the library at a local shrine but after they built the new church on that spot they had a big bonfire.
So basically if you want to see anything secret from the library at alexandria you'll find it residing in the vatican library in Rome.
But its not a public library so its a little unlikely that they'll just let you in.
its also guarded by eight foot tall jesuits with laser beams for eyes
hehehe
