'Simpsons' at "halfway point": Groening
Monday, April 25 2005, 18:25 BST -- by James Welsh

The Simpsons creator Matt Groening has indicated that he plans for the show to stay on the air for many years to come.

Despite some previous indications that the show could be reaching the end, Groening told the New York Times on Sunday that in fact he thinks "the show has almost reached its halfway point, which means another 17 years."

Groening attributed the series' longevity to "a real emotional depth to these characters," adding that the 20th Century Fox studio still seems "pretty happy" with the show.

Only the halfway point? I can't believe they still think they will be able to come up with new material, and keep us entertained. The show is not funny anymore, and really, it will only get worse.

I disagree Dieby. The new series spews some of the best ever! yes.gif

The last few seasons (at least since 1999-2000) have really reeked.

I think its time they gracefully stepped down. Besides...have you see the cast? Every interview they do, every TV spot, every time they're in front of a camera they have a tired, bored and annoyed look about them.

I think that over 10 years of doing the same old thing has gotten to them.

The show kinda has it sup and downs. For a while there is was AWFUL, but it seems to be picking up again. thumbsup.gif I loved the show SOOO much from it's 3rd-6th seasons.
TheOriginalF
I really hope so...they are really losing it.
The Roswell Man

Some of the best ever? No way. The writers have lost their original humour, from the best epidodes in the 90's, and have replaced it with random (Kind of like Family Guy, but far from it) silly, childish 'humour' that really gets annoying.

I am SO tired of the Simpsons, I can't stand it anymore. I was such a huge fan since it aired, but around 99 - 00 it started to get bad. It isn't funny.

Time to call it quits and move on.
BurnSide
I haven't been able to watch a new episode in well over a year, maybe 2. It's just crap to the point that i'd prefer to watch a repeat of some terrible sitcom, at least i'll get a chuckle in.
The Roswell Man
or watch the older episodes.
i still watch sum of them than watch the newer drivel.
BurnSide
Older simpsons will always be funny. I can watch any episodes made up to 2000 and still laugh my bottom right off. They're terrific.
They just ran out of ideas far to long ago, and still feel the need to flog the dead donkey.
Mad Manfred
I'm more into South Park these days.

They're a lot less reserved.

Walken
But the episode with Christopher Walken in it (new) is great!

So was the episode in china.... yes.gif
TheOriginalF
I just don't find it funny anymore, I don't think I've looked forward to watching the simpsons since the 1990's. They have overstayed their welcome, become repetetive, and the show is mearly a shadow of what it once was. It's too bad the show really was funny back in the day.
Shakezulah
my god. just let go of it already! it doesnt need to continue. how many more show ideas can they possibly come up with? it has gotten so stale, with a few good episodes here and there, but for the most part, it just sucks now.
RH2097
They should stop it while they still have a fan base. Because the longer and longer they run the show the more people will start to dislike it.
AztecInca
Well at least all the older episodes are constantly replayed on free to air and cable over and over and over again.

I'm surprised they haven't made one already but they will make a movie. I think the current plan is to do some more series and then finish with a movie, although I don't know how they could come up with a good 90 minute movie when they are struggling to produce a good 30 minute episode.

I haven't made an effort to watch the new eps in ages... If it's on then I'll watch but otherwise pfft... The Simpsons is only about two things now... Going on 'wacky' adventures and having a celebrity guest... I mean, why in all that is good did 50 Cent get a cameo on the show? He is over rated nothingness and the show should be above his standards.

The show use to feel like the episodes were written and then jokes were added but now it feels more like they express package a story around a couple of lame jokes.

Sure they're is the odd thing that is still quite funny but for the most part it has gone way down hill...

They should get Conan back and start writing actual stories instead of 'oh, we haven't sent them to Iraq, lets send them there' stuff...

You know what though, the type of people who are disliking the newer episodes of The Simpsons are the 'older' crowd that has watched it from the beginning. The only reason they're still going with the series, and apparently, are still popular is because of the newer generation of young kids watching and raving over the show. I know my little cousins love The Simpsons, and the newer episodes even though I don't because they "don't know any better."

I don't think I'll be able to go another 17 years with the Simpsons though, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do go for that much longer...
Fox Lupine
Well I guess you'll considere this good news. Can't remember all the details, but apprently Mat Groeing (that how you spell it?) is going to stop it running in 2006 for fear it will lose its novelty. I'll try and find the details
BurnSide
For fear it'll lose it's novelty?
Matt, you're already 5 years late buddy..
Fox Lupine
Hey, I disagree. Sure Simpsons is repetitive, but who here can claim its not halarious?

The idea of a perfectly normal american family, in a ridicoulously incompetentt town....its great is all. Got nothing on Futurama though
BurnSide
I can claim it's not hilarious.
Maybe not back when it was to a point realistic and a good humorous observation of the times, but now that it's all about wacky unbeliavble adventures and the like, with the characters just pretty much going along the lines of whatever is in, it just doesn't even get a chuckle out of me.
MonkeyMan
Back in the day they had original episodes, each one with a good story and moral(jk tongue.gif) to it. Now all they do is have an intro that is nearly irrevelant to the whole episode, has family guy style humour that isn't even funny, and has this shadow of being overcast by family guy and american dad. They have run through any original ideas the had(remember the we'll have stories for years episode?), and now it's getting really, really, really stale. I think that they should quit while they're ahead. Otherwise I have lost all respect for them. HTe only reason why thye're trying to do this is so they can appeal to 6 year olds who are retarded. Back then you had that, but it also had hidden appeal to us older viewers. Butit's gone, all gone........ no.gif
FLY SPITTA
No matter what anyone says I say this show does not need to end it's a great show! If peopl don't like it it's simple don't watch it. What would you rather have Simpsons on or a reality show? wink2.gif
girty1600
I still really like "The Simpsons" even though some of the eps. have been hit-and-miss. I hope they keep making the show for many seasons to come. There is very little tv I can actually stomache anymore but I always look forward to seeing new eps. I am still catching up with eps. up to four years old since I worked most Sunday evenings over the last couple of years. I understand if people don't like the show anymore but why would you watch it if you don't like it? I hate American Idol and it comes on after the Simpsons re-reuns so I change the channel.
Subtemperate
I agree that the simpsons should not end yet..... Even their bad episodes are better then most of the other garbage there is to watch.... Just because its not at its highest point is no reason to can it......

FLY SPITTA
Sometimes I wait to watch the Simpsons and they show a really old episode and I still watch it that's how good the show is! I watch that show at least once a day. So I see no reason in canceling that show. no.gif
Neo2005
The simpsons are the longest running show on T.V. and it will go on forever unless Family Guy takes over.
But everyone loves the simpsons the DVD sales are lackluster but that because you can any episode you want on syndication.
I think the simpsons will be around for a long time to come.
