Anyone played Civ-I-LISE-ation series? I have. They're fun. I conquer my opponents then laugth at their parents.
ABOTU
sorry I, just kind of, find it incredibly boring! but my brother likes it hmm.gif how can 2 related people be so different... yah so whatever....
Talon
I play Civ 3 all the time, originally as the Greeks (notice the Tony Blair lookalike) until I got the expansions packs but now I only play as the Celts... because I am one
Talon
Although I wish it could last longer. I really like the huge worlds because I like games which can last days. What I'd really like is a map of Earth which is so large it, countries like Scotland can take up an entire screne, while others like Russia would be so large the'd take up the space of the 'Huge world' currently in the game. I'd love to play a two player hot seat game as both Scotland and Japan and take over the world with the two. thumbsup.gif

Also wish they'd increase the AI. I prefered in Civ 2 when I'd constantly see things like 'England and Germany have signed mutual agreement act against American agression' etc ...... right before Scotland invaes and conquers all three wacko.gif In Civ 3 alliances only ever seem to appear in the harder moods, and seems completely random, rather than based on past history with a certain nation.
Talon
Oh Oh Oh, and I wish they'd make it last another 1000 years and have future technologies like Call to Power does. Only don't make it rubbish like CtP... and am I the only who doesn't like the look of the graphics in Civ4?
Dante Rouseau
Screenshots have been released of civ4 where I must see them. As you might have guessed I love the civ games, and selling tech to rivals at huge prices oh yes.

Just look a little too cartoony for me
Walken
Same here.

That would be very awesome, Talon.

But you know what would be even better?

A HUGE online game! ph34r.gif

Whats your favoured stratergy?

Mine is...

1. Early in the game exploit a small nation and claim a lot of cash from them. Save it for later...

2. Keep your territory small, but if possible, build it between two larger nations. That wayIt’ll be easier to defend and if the two larger nations go to war you can get a lot of profit from a right of passage trade.

3.The line. With a very small territory, such as the kind I use, you can build a wall with solders, making an enemy invasion practically impossible. And don’t forget, in wartime keep the soldiers churning out to a) Re-enforce the wall. cool.gif Invade enemy colonies.

4. Play your wars with a quick hand. Provoke them into declaring war or make unreasonable demands to cause this. Do it in a way through which they have little time to prepare. When the war begins, move all available troops not in your wall into an attack against independent or unguarded cities, separated from the main territory of your victim. ALWAYS collect the city. You can sell it back to your enemy for a small price anyhow.

5. Before you call for peace, pick off all the workers you can find.

6. Never kill a settler during war, simply wait for it to build a city, which will automatically be undefended, ripe for the picking

First, I only ever play in HUGE WORLD, because I like lenthly games where I can smash a lot of countries and gives me more time before I meet someone else. I hate smaller worlds where I meet another nation early and its almost constant war from then on before I'm ready. I also only play with Pangea's because I can't stand water crossings.

I tend to invest heavily in Settlers early on. I like to spread fast and create a large empire which can produce a lot of troops before I even meet other civilisations or start a war. In the easier modes I'll even not bother having troops early on because of the lack of agression from neighbours.

After I've started meeting other empires I'll start creating troops on my outlying cities for defense, while my larger cities will provide the last few settles to make the scramble for the last spaces of unclaimed land in unclaimed terretory.

After that I sit back for a few hundred years, build a defensive army and increase industry. Basically I sit back and wait until I've got gunpower, cavalry, and railroad technology.

I only ever got to war after I have gunpower calvery which can move quickly over enemy terrirtory, and railroads to carry them to the border. From there I just concentrate on taking one nation at a time, using trying to go after those neighbours who hav saltpepper and iron resoures first.

Talon describes pretty much how I play it. I go as heavy tech as I can though, micromanaging the sliders like when one turn to develop the tech I move the slider to stay at 1 turn but still get the cash. Sometimes I opt not to kill everyone once I've got the railroads and gunpowder troops (musketmen? riflemen? riflemen are only after communist right?) and go as heavy tech as I can till I get ICBM's. Then mass destruction and global warming sets in... Sometimes I can't wait and do it once I get those mech infantry. Hardly every use the guerilla tree, always play the one with the numidian mercenaries... what is that? Carthage I think? and usually play against religious, militaristic... I don't like to play against the tech or industry guys... expansionists are kinda a pain too... Spain, Iroquis, Arabs... they make nice opponents. Usually about 6 opponents give or take a couple depending how long I wanna spend on that particular game.

Fun game!
Walken
I always play with lots of opponents.

I also like to start a war, then turn it into a world war by inviting evreyone to join. Then I leave the war by buying off my enemeys, and enter through the back door to take over yes.gif
Talon
Am I the only one who hates the ugly cartoony heads of state they used in Civ 3? Hope in four they have more normall looking people.

I also miss the advisors from Civ 2, especially Elvis laugh.gif
Walken
Yeah. Civ two had a lot larger varitey when it came to maps too. It also had more options at the start of the game and an easier engine.
Talon
I remember one of the problems though about Civ 2, was that it didn't limit technology, so it was quite capable for your empire to have Atom Bombs without even learning the Wheel

I once played the Roman Empire (bloody Romans) scenario. Obviously I picked the Celts tongue.gif Now the Celts at the time were being exterminated by the Romans, so in the game this was reflected by the Celts only having 3 cities all miles apart from each other.
So all I did was hide in my three cities and concentrate on a particular technology path. By the year 0000 AD I was starting to build Marines while the Romans were still on Pikeman.

It was so funny seeing the Celtic Empire being rebuilt just by taking each Roman City one at a time with tanks. And the poor Romans could do nothing but through spears against me.

I wonder how the world would have turned out if the Celts really had developed Mechanized Infantry back when we were fighting Rome? huh.gif
Dante Rouseau
Very nice, I seem to remember that although I've never had quite a large technology gap I did once conquer most of the worls with my Egyptian riflemen while the rest were still using swords and spears.
Walken
When you play on easy it is incredibly easy to advance your technology above your enemeys.
Talon
Doesn't need to be easy mode, Civ2 in general was easy. It was only in the harder modes I had any problems
Walken
I was talking about Civ3 tongue.gif
Talon
Yeah Civ3's harder, anything above the first 4 difficulty levels starts giving a challenge because they start getting quicker production times after that.
Yona
I know! you ave 1 plane, they have 5... kinda sucks..
Celumnaz
That's another branch I never really built but once or twice when I first started... planes. I never build em anymore... never got used to how they worked. Always seemed easier just to nuke em and then ship something there to clean up the mess.

Planes have given me problems before when the computer plays them, but not for too long tongue.gif

Just never got the knack of using em myself sad.gif
Talon
Why am I not surprised the Republican uses nukes tongue.gif

I never use nukes or planes, I only use tanks or calvery riflemen. I avoid ships, I prefer land battles.
Walken
Me too. My weapons of choice in Civ 2 were tanks and helecopters, definatley.

lol, the only party I've ever joined was the Libertarian party... and not even with them anymore. original.gif

yeah, even ships I only wind up building a few of... just for troop transportation mostly. Never really had the computer build a Navy that gave me any problems. Computer is MUCH better at using planes than I am. I usually don't even build airports hehe...

reading all this though kinda makes me want to try and win a game without using the mech infantry tree and nukes... hmmm... would sure make it a different game...
Talon
Anyone tried a method winning that didn't involve conquest or domination? Like cultural or Diplomatic victory? I just think I'd find them boring.
Walken
Nope. I try to be diplomatic to extend the game, but conquests all the way for me! yes.gif
Celumnaz
I've won the Diplomatic way once, by accident. Wanted to see what would happen if I held the vote, and had good ties with most of them, and had killed a few so was the biggest on map... so they voted for me.
All but the second bigest who voted for themself and the one that had been reduced to an island and hated me... for reducing them to one island.

Usually don't hold the vote when it asks now. One time I lost... ICBM's put a big hit against everyone when I thought there was no majority.

Never done a game where that was the only condition to win though. Have also won the space shuttle way, but need to do it again as I never saw any movie or animation when it finished or launched. sad.gif

Never even thought of cultural... not even sure I know the conditions on that one hehe...

One thing about the Carthage guys is they get the pyramid early. So don't even have to worry about pottery at first really. Put 100% tech on the temple thing for some good BC culture, numidian mercs are next tech. Usually get 2 - 3 warriors/settlers/workers. Then keep producing till you see someone else starting pyramids, or just start them early... expand to get either more land, or specific resources depending on where I am/how many opponents n stuff. Often able to have a good half dozen cities or more when the pyramids hit, then more expansion, defend till I decide to battle.

The early temples give great culture later on... and I always get the pyramids. Usually have the highest culture later on no matter what they build. I try to get Theory of Evolution first, and use that on the longest tech to learn at the time, then go back later for the riflemen and military build. Communism is what I usually end the game with, it's better for war. Often keep Dictatorship till Democracy, sometimes I'll go monotheistic or whatever that is depending on if someone's whacking me hard early.

Wonder if that'd win Cultural too?
Celumnaz
Tried a regicide... didn't go well. Never even made it past BC. blush.gif
Mr Ed
I have played civ 3 a few times, it seems to have a much slower pace than civ 2, which I prefer...
