I don't know if this has been already done, but do any of you write your own music?

Here's my piece:

I've been writing music for years, mostly for my self and the various bands I have worked for. I recently taught a class on composition and arrangement, first real college level teaching gig, I was very excited. I love doing it, and it's a great way to make a living! thumbsup.gif I'd post something here for all of you, but I get really paranoid about copy right infringements...so if it's all the same I would rather not.

I really liked the piece you posted MrScienceGuy, great use of rhythm which in turn provided a solid base for song itself. The catchy nature of the composition kept it intriguing to the listener and didn't allow for the song to become repetitive (which can happen all to often when writing music...I've been bitten by the repetition bug many times in my life). Anyway a solid piece, I enjoyed it.

THanks, I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, I probably would be worried about copyright too if I planned on doing commercial stuff. WHat kind of music do you write?

Maybe you can post some stuff so we can check it out and give you some opinions.

Well it depends on the situation I find myself in MrScienceGuy, for my own projects I tend to write experimental rock...sort of a combination of Dizzy Gillespie, The Grateful Dead, and Sonic Youth. I try to compose simple pieces that leave lots of room to "jam" when being performed on stage. As for my "professional" song writing (as a session musician I play and compose for all sorts of different people with varying styles) career I've written everything from commercial jingles, theater music, and sappy love ballads to reggae, jazz and blues.

I'm probably over reacting when it comes to posting some music here and I really don't think anybody here would rip me off or anything, but I get really nervous about it none the less.

I think however I may go through some of my tapes tonight and see if I can't find something to post for you guys.

Sounds awesome. What kind of instrument(s) do you play? I've been experimenting with a guitar for a bit. Thinking about learning some piano. I have plenty of music going on in my head, but I cant put it all down on paper yet. What is your method of composing? Hope you can find some music for us thumbsup.gif
TheOriginalF
Well I predominantly play bass, upright and electric, but I also play cello, violin, and piano, I do sing lead in a few bands. I dabble with a lot of other stringed instruments but I wouldn't say that I know how to play them. What kind of stuff have you been doing with the guitar? I would learn piano if you enjoy composing it's an invaluable tool, and it's not too difficult to learn once you have your scales down...you may not wind up be the best player (without years of lessons) but it'll be enough to you get by. What did you use to compose the piece you posted above?

Yeah I know what you mean about having all of that music in your head, my problem is alway trying to express it in a physical form, it never comes out sounding the way it did in my head. I can't remember who said this but it's a great quate, "Once the music leaves your head it's already been compromised" that truly sums up my musical writing experiences.

My composing style really depends on the situation, with my band "F" I tend to put together chord progressions...a skeletal outline of the song if you will, and bring them to rehearsal, the band will jam on them for a few hours and after awhile a song begins to appear. I usually then go and scour my notebooks for lyrics/poems that I can add to the music and that's about the extent of it. As for my professional song writing I tend to spend long hours in front of a piano, linking chords and melodies together until I come up with something catchy that I can present to a client. Generally musical theory plays a big part in my compositional style and having the understanding of how different styles progress and what chords are needed to provide the proper hook have been very beneficial to my career.

How about yourself? How did you go about putting together the piece of music you posted?

So that's about the size of it all right there...oh I found some old compositions I did in college that I'm loading into my computer right now so I should be able to post them here in a few minutes.
TheOriginalF
Hmmmm...I can't quite figure out how to post them. How does one go about doing this?
MrScienceGuy
Impressive! You play quite a few instruments. I play a bit on a classical guitar, but havent had much time to practice lately. I also like messing around with an electrical guitar plug-in called "Slayer" for FL-studio. You can get an amazingly realistic guitar sound. FL-studio is what I used to write that piece I posted. For composing, Finale is a really nice program. I'm sure you've heard about it, if not you should check it out.

Yeah, I too doubt I'll ever be able to write what's in my head. It's sad, but alas. I am no Mozart. The way I composed the piece is just going along with what feels right at the time. Basically trial and error. My music theory knowledge is superficial. But I plan to experiment with some counterpoint next. Get 2 electro guitars going, a base, and drums. A quartet so to say grin2.gif

Who are your favorite classical composers?

Oh wonderful! Thank you...I'll try and get something posted here in a few moments.
MrScienceGuy
You're welcome. Oh ya, the limit is 2 meg on that place. Kinda sux. Hope you'll be able to fit it in.
TheOriginalF
It's too big too fit, but I understand the concept now so I should be able to get it up in no time...I'll look around the net and see if I can find something to host it.

In the meantime I'll continue our discussion. I do play quite a lot of instruments but I've been playing since I was six years old, so I have about twenty years under my belt. It's taken time learn and I spend more time playing then is probably healthy, but I enjoy it....so no harm I guess. You're into the classical guitar? I love classical guitar, it's becoming more and more of a lost art and it's quite difficult to play so I have the utmost respect for anybody undertaking the instrument.

I actually wasn't too familiar with FL Studio, now I am going to become horribly addicted to it and never leave my house! This may get very bad...I love the slayer plugin, is it slayer 2 that you are using or is there another? Anyway it's a great feature it's like having a 64 channel effects pedal right at your finger tips. I'll make good use of all this I'm sure, thanks for sending that along!

Yes composing from the heart is what truly separates the wheat from the chaff. Sometimes people get so wrapped up in theory that they forget that the most important thing about composing is expressing your emotions. This would explain all of the really bad pop music that you hear on the radio, it's usually written by session guys and just lacks the emotion that an honest composer will lend to the listener. I hope your experiment in counterpoint goes well for you...it's quite a treat when it all comes together and flows just the way you wanted it to. I'd love to hear it when you get it finished.

My favorite classical composers, well I recently have fallen in love with works of Giovanni Bottesini. He played double bass and was quite ahead of his time back in the 19th century, very beautiful pieces. Check out Myer & Bottesini Concertos as played by Edgar Myer, it's sounds very much like cello only deeper and a little more soulful. I would say my all time favorites however are Bach (The Brandenburg concertos is still one of the most amazing pieces of music I have ever heard), and Mahler. How about yourself?

Anyway I'll get this piece of mine uploaded for you as soon as I can find a way to do it.
MrScienceGuy
Yes, classical guitar is quite hard to learn as it requires many hours of painful practice. But I hope to pick it up again. I only know how to play several etudes so far. Cool, I'm sure you will enjoy FL tremendously. But yes, it can get very addicting. And yes, that's the plugin I use. I'll post a short piece I did with it here. Nothing serious but gives some idea of the sound. As for pop music, it can hardly be considered music, in my opinion, just filler. It feels like it has all been done on one giant assembly line. What would Beethoven say no.gif I agree, expression of feelings is what gives music it's soul.

I love Bach, that why I want to do some counterpoint. His fuges are amazing. Mahler is hardcore! Finally a composer whos not restricted by any means of form. His music is very emotional. I also like Brohms, his chamber music is incredible. I'll be sure to check out Bottesini, thanks.

I have a question?. When writing music is it better to write the music first then add lyrics or write the lyrics first then add the music?
