Hello, I'm new here.

I'd just like to talk about the black panther sightings which have occured in the UK and in New Zealand, as far as I know.

I live in Auckland, New Zealand, and in the past year there has been much controvertial debate as to the existence of black panthers in the southern regions of a place called canterbury.

For those that don't know, canterbury is mainly marshy farmland, with pockets of dense temperate bush. Lately there have been many reported sightings of "A huge black cat", and there has even been a very brief video taping, which looks realistic.

I would love to travel to canterbury, armed with a video camera, binoculars, and a trusty notebook blush.gif and walk it's countryside for a few weeks, looking for signs, and, perhaps, a glimpse of the cat/s. I hope to do this when I find the time.

Anywayz, does anyone have any opinions on this case?

O.k, O.k no need to fight angry.gif i'm from New Zealand also and YES i have heard lots about the "big black panther" sightings but that was last year. those sighting were mostly done by tourists who were travelling on buses around Canterbury. However, a farmer who lives in the area did see it, the news media made thought that it was just a dog, but the farmer disagreed and stated that it was at least 3-4 times the size of a normal dog! (there were also tracks found) it could just be someones pet gone astray?! unsure.gif who knows.

P.S i don't live that far from Canterbury! thumbup.gif w00t.gif

Nareik, there's no call to be rude.

Theseus was giving us the details of an area which most of us have no idea about.

In any reports, the more details given the better. thumbsup.gif

Mad Manfred
One tried to eat me a few months ago.
Tia
How's that going Mad Manfred? Anymore sightings?
Mad Manfred
Nothing at all.

If I had to guess I would say it was an escapee from a local circus (we have at least three that come through once a year).

Its probable that it was caught later and returned to captivity (all this may have been reported in the local paper, which I don't read).

Anyways, I'm pretty sure it was a panther...though, as I said when it happened, it was about half the size of a regular panther...probably an adolencent.

Here's a link to a website, I haven't been through it all yet but see what you think.

Excellent site...I've only read a couple so far, but I'll get through the rest later tonight thumbsup.gif

Sounds to me that he is from Canterbury, and Theseus is from Auckland (the northern part of our country) i've been there (Canterbury) and there are ALOT of plains that stretch for miles so yea it is possible for something to live there........ w00t.gif

other than house cats, are there any other cats that are native to new zealand?
your jungles, mountains, and forests are certainly big enough to support big cats in it are'nt they?
Mr Ed
They must be were-cats, as there is not other possible explanation.
There was an article in my local paper the other day, saying the beast is back...

NOPE. just your average house cats that live here yes.gif but yes we DO have very dense and dark forests here, so it is possible that there could be something living in there w00t.gif there have been other sightings of animals such as the Moa which is a GIANT bird thought to be extinct for over 200 years many people have claimed to have seen one, so who knows................

P.S a tourist managed to take a snapshot of the "panther" and believe me its BIGGER than a dog and does look cat like unsure.gif
