Hey there,
I thought I would send along a local story I have heard many times in my life about a haunted railroad in Northern Maine. There is a haunted stretch of tracks along the Allagash river. According to the legend a lone engineer is seen wondering the tracks and looking after the abandoned trains that where left to rot on the tracks when the rail was shut down in the 1940's. Also it has been mentioned that you can hear trains coming down the track and whistles blowing in the distance when you are standing next to the trains.
So there you go a small local legend about a haunted railroad it's nothing too special but I thought you might find it interesting. I have a read a few newspaper articles about it and the tale has been featured in a few books I've come across about local folklore but I haven't seen anything about it on the internet...so take it for what it's worth.
It's also worth mentioning that these abandoned trains can be found just off the shore of Eagle Lake...which is essentially a very big widening in the actual river...Eagle lake is famous for being the area where the supposed alien abductions took place back in the 1970's. (here's a link to that tale if your interested:
Link) Kind of creepy if both stories are true!
Anyway I have attached a few photos of the trains, nothing is mentioned about the ghost but it may give you a bit of a feel for what the area looks like.

one of my favorite north carolina railroad ghost stories!
Joe Baldwin was a train conductor for the Atlantic Coast Railroad. One evening, when nearing their final destination of Wilmington, the last car of the train that Joe was on got separated from the engine, just outside of the tiny town of Maco. To make matters worse, another train was following closely behind. Baldwin ran to the back of the car, and frantically waved his lantern to warn off the other train, but to no avail. The second train collided with the car, and Baldwin was decapitated.
In the 100+ years following the accident, thousands of people reported seeing an unearthly, white light swinging back and forth along the railroad tracks near Maco Station. It became such a common sight, that train engineers that made the Wilmington run would mount green and red lights on their trains as signals, so as not to be confused with the Light. In October 1894, President Grover Cleveland himself saw the Light from his pullman. In 1925, two farm boys claimed that the Light “chased them for several miles through the woods”. During World War II, a soldier home on leave also claimed to be chased down the tracks by “ghostly lights”.
Many believe that the Light is the ghost of Joe Baldwin, still trying to warn off the other train. Others prefer a more scientific explanation, such as ball lightning or marsh gases. We will probably never know, as the tracks were pulled up in 1977, and the Maco Light has not been seen since.

I live in an area with a lot of trains as well as a lot train ghost stories...not to mention the town I live in used to be about 95% mafia and throwing someone in front of a train was always the way to "wack" someone back in the day...
I am going to dig around and see if I can find any info on the "ghosts" in this area for you...
There are a few spots that I would like to investigate actually, if anyone is interested and in the Pittsburgh area...gimme a PM and I'll tell you what I have in mind...

Here's a link to an article about the Hoosac Tunnel in my own home state of Massachussetts..
The ghost stories are towards the bottom of the page; as well as a detailed account of a paranormal investigation into it..
