Mad Manfred
'Allo,

I've been wanting to learn German for years now and would like to know if there are any online courses I can take?

I'd go to TAFE though there are no classes available in my area.

Thanks,
MM
AutumnDragon

german, I can only say a few words, I plan on learning more once I master Japanese.

German is definitively not a easy languages to learn... I don't know if you are aware of that, but here in Switzerland, but are speaking 4 languages : french, german, italian, and romanche... (which is a mix italien/german)... anyway, when your mothertongue is french, at school you are learning german, and vice versa when your mothertongue is german... then, as an option, you choose between italian or english...
So, here we start to learn german/french very early, around 10 I think... until 15 we have too... then, it depends in which professional directions you are going to take... but we usually have around 8 or 9 years of german/french behind us... Hey, we have to, we really are a small country...
Elthrad
If you only want to learn a few phrases google has a preety good translator under language tools.

SnakeProphet
I recommend learning Latin. With Latin, languages like German, English, French, Italian(especially),Spanish etc will be a piece of cake(?).
BurnedMaskAJ

and you hate, when used in other courses.

Kannst du sprechen gut duetsch jetzt?
SnakeProphet

Not really. You hate would be "du hasst".
frogfish
we have german exchange students in our school now...

i mean in other contexts. and what part of germany are you speaking for? tongue.gif
Yelekiah
Actually you could spell it "hast", it really depends on how you pronounce it. Hate has a much harder sound than have.

hast(have) sounds almost like 1 1/4 syllables

hast(hate) sounds like a one breath HAST.

Yelekiah
It's like hassst, a harder sound when you talk about hate. To have is lighter.
SnakeProphet
No, not really. HASST means to hate and HAST means to have.
MonkeyMan

No, not really. HASST means to hate and HAST means to have.

i have never seen hasst used. what part of germany is this being used?
Yelekiah
And you can spell "to hate" as hast. A lot of Germans I know do it. Quite common.

It may be a variation in Hoch Deutsch.
SnakeProphet
Then they are doing it wrong. And I'm speaking for the whole of germany. Look it up in a dictionary.

And no, it's not Hochdeutsch, it's simple grammar.

well im only in my second year of german tongue.gif so im not an all knower grin2.gif

but we have this new german spelling reform, so that could be it
Yelekiah
I said a variation Snake. You can compare it to colour and color. There are variations in spelling.
SnakeProphet
Ok, googled hast, and had a look at the first few pages. It's used solely with the meaning "you have".

No, there are no variations in spelling in the german language, not that I know of. Colour and color are the same word, hast and hasst are two different words with different meanings.

Hey, I'm not critisizing you, just trying to help. You could be right about the reform, I'm used to the new grammar rules, so it just might be an old one.
Yelekiah
Of course solely, but it is also used for hate as well. Variation in spelling. End of story.

Best ways to learn German:

1. Live there for a couple of months/years
2. Watch loads of german TV

You can take lessons but the best way is surround yourself with everything german.
good way is to watch your DVD's in German with Englisch subs.
I myself lived in Germany for 5 years so I had to learn it quick and trust me a corse ain't that effective.

Du Hast is you have and it could be you hate, they use the same word for both.
Depends on how you use it in a sentance.
Du hast einem hund = you have a dog
Du hast mich = You hate me

Correct, pronunciation is key as well. Another good way is to listen to tapes or German music to aid in pronunciation, so you will not be misunderstood.
