IMO, music is diminished (to put it nicely) when it is tainted with the human voice.
pure music can express its meaning clearly on its own without a narrative. in today's music, the narrative is an excuse to not make music (after all, they don't want real music when marketing to the masses - lcd prevails)

I agree Hyperactive, music can be diminished by the human voice...in some aspects. The human voice can be a viable instrument if used properly, it comes down to weather or not you think a voice is capable of making music the same way a violin or piano does. I have heard very touching and beautiful music with a human voice, a whole myriad of operas come to mind, and there are musicians in the popular realm that are quite capable of mixing great music with lyrics. You just have to know where to find them, as a matter of fact most of the modern music I listen to you can find a nice mixture of lyrical and instrumental compositions.
The problem with this whole discussion is we have to define what we mean by modern music, the sea is just too vast to cover every composer with one blanket term. I do agree that most bands in the popular realm are utter garbage, but that is because the record labels are pushing artist that don't have any real talent for the sake of a few one hit wonders. Art can't truly flourish in a capitalist setting...at some point the art will be compromised for money, and that is the true root of evil in modern music.
