----------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, five of the most patriotic countries are English-speaking countries, four are Anglo-Saxon countries, four are Scandinavian countries. No other European country, except Austria, is in the list.
Blackleaf
There are only 6 countries where the majority of the people are patriotic.
JMPD1
And, just for the record, how many Africans or Asians, or South Americans did this Scottish newspaper contact for this survey?
Amalgamut
If the US ever gets below 50% I might have to move.

How about this one from the same source?

to compare to the patriotism staistics?
Mr Ed
The UK is only patriotic during war against a large and threatening force. I believe that people here only feel patriotism for the state, not the government. This is unlike the USA, where the large majority seem to back the president...
DukeofNoodleness
I find it amusing that the scottish were not on that list.

I went to scotland to visit my mother....and some woman said ''The gates in england are still open, yes? GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM!''
I smiled and mentioned that my mother was half scottish...and there fore I was part scottish too.

The scottish are more patriotic than the UK. The UK look out for themselfs and themselfs only. I'm so ashamed of this country. The only place I've ever found to be home is Liverpool.

[Edit] STOP using offensive language Noods, i'm getting tired of removing it from you.

I'm a little surprised Scotland didn't get its own individual score too...especially given it was a Scottish paper that printed the results. A great many Scots are some of the most passionate nationalists you're ever likely to me...although, as Mr Ed said, our passion is very much for our country, and not the government...in fact, we tend to hate the government huh.gif

Isnt Scotland part of the UK, not it's own country. I would imagine the Scottish repsonses were included in the UK total. Surprising that Australia was third.

It is part of the UK...but it is very much its own country, in much the same way that Canada is its own country, despite sharing a border with the united states. The fact that the united kingdom takes the form of a union does not in any way make the different components of it not individual countries. They just happen to share laws, currency, and a center of government.
Mr Ed
Hmmmm the Scottish government didn't pass tuition fees did they?
LucidElement
AMERICA BABY!!! im sooo PATRIOTIC I LUVVVVVV THIS COUNTRY!!!!.. As i said in another thread.. its all about the football games when they fly over the stadium in F17's or what not.. and everyone goes crazy.. you get goosebumps its awsome!!
Mr Ed
Well just be careful that your patriotism does not turn into extreme nationalism.

Yes Lucid, your right. It's becuase your Government is currently running a very succesful advertising campaign which includes big planes and football matches.

Whenever I think of what other nations think of the British, the following image pops into my head:

A big fat bald white man, wearing a Union Jack t-shirt and eating baked beans and sausages, whilst watching the Queen on television or something. With Tower Bridge in the background.

What is the thread about? proud of one's nationality? This is one of the most stupid surveys I've ever seen. Show me one who doesn't love their country....how do you measure that? what are the criteria? god, that's pathetic....

Im patriotic...or I would be if I was allowed...there is alot that England is not allowed to be patriotic...like flying the English(St Georges cross) flag...not allowed...celebrating St Georges day...not allowed and the reasons these things are not allowed is because we don't want to upset anyone...but...WHAT ABOUT US?We are allowed to be upset, just as long as everyone is ok?

Sorry...just am very patriotic for England...just not allowed to be.

yeah, like in the reenactment of the battle of Trafalgar they're doing this summer the're not actually calling them Britain and France, they're gonna be 'Blue' and 'Red'! Cos we don't want to offend the French!

(n.b. no offence to any French people; but the French are proud of French achievements, there's still a lot of admiration for Napoleon, but we're always very coy about our achievements. mad.gif )

You can fly the St George flag in your home if it makes you feel patriotic Alice....and celebrate it yourself. Can't understand why ANYONE has to be patriotic when in your borders. Do you need to fly the brittish flag in England? What's the point?

And about the battle of trafalgar. So what if they call em blue and red? Who gives a flying f...??? What are you gaining from watching such a bad-taste recreation? Unless they are changing the outcome....then it might be fun....

Whoa...hang on hun...didn't mean to upset you over anything I said.

Im not on about flying the British flag(that is called the Union Jack) I want to fly Englands flag(2 different flags).

On a footie day(like the world cup)business are not allowed to fly the flag to support their team...we are allowed to celebrate St Patrick's day(Ireland's patron saint)and Chinese new year over here...but just not our own Saints day?

Horatio Nelson wrote such a  place.

This is why we want to have our "bad taste recreation"...for a hero...big celebrations are taking place where I live this year as it marks the 200 year of Nelson's death...thats a big thing here...I live in Norfolk,England!

Hope that explains a bit better for you hun.

Whoa....sorry you got me wrong as well....

Not meant to shout at you or anything....I know and love England, I've spent some wonderful years there (Magic Plymouth...original.gif) I always liked that the Brits loved their country (including the Scots, the Irish, the Welsh etc.) I'm just saying that these kind of expressions tend to the right wing and give a foothold to them saying a bunch of b...it (you national party etc..). That's why I find them un-needed and un-wanted. The whole world knew the Brittish empire (some met the dark side of it as well, if I might say) and where Brittain stands today among the world, so the rest are just....decoration.

As to the individual heroes, I'm pretty certain there are enough streets with their names on...original.gif

Are you sure that's true? On St Georges day this year I flew my flag with pride out my window and I don't see the harm. Also, last year during Euro 2004 the pub in which I work was covered in the Cross of St George, must have been over 500 seperate little flags including some very large ones too.

I'm not being funnny but I have a feeling this thread might turn into a ''which is the best country thread'' sad.gif Please don't get nasty people.

I'm british and I'm not patriotic at all. All countries have done good and bad things and to think that your countries better than anyone elses is a little arogant. I mean if you start to think your countries better than others you will start to judge it on people too....This is how racist and prejudiced thoughts start. Patriotics look out for their country and their country only.....I remember hearing on the news about the twin towers attack. And they simply said ''so so many people have died including so so english people''

That shocked me. It was as if they had to outline the fact that british people had died in it. So no asians? No french? No canadians? Just english and the rest.....

It hurt me to think they felt the extreme need to address that. If you address one countries lossess you address them ALL. You don't pick and chose.

Being proud of your country is one thing....and it's acceptable. Thinking it's better than anyone elses is another completly different thing!
Mr Ed
I disagree, I don't think that will happen. However an American might start getting hyper patriotic.
AliceCoopersGirl
Im patriotic...but that does not mean I think England is better than anywhere else...its just its my country and my ancessters are here, which gives me a feeling of belonging.

There are a few things that I do not agree in with this country and some I do...Im just happy to belong. wink2.gif

That's a good way to look at things...and someone can definatly have a feel of belonging if their ancestors are from a certain place. Unfortunatly for me, I feel my ancestors are from the world. Not a particular country, so I am not patriotic in the slightest.

I am proud of the country I was born in, Austarlia. Not becuase of it's Government but becuase of it's unique beauty , it's art and it's people. I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping planes.... wub.gif

I am proud of the nation I live in now New Zealand, because of it's anti nuclear stance, it's people, who think outside of the square (something to do with small nation isolation I guess), it's strong views on conservation and it's belief in peace. wub.gif

I too, love my country, but not for political reasons. I love the wildlife, mountains, streams, rivers, hollers (lol), woods and caves. I'm proud of all the people that I work with to help clean up the environment. yes.gif

I wish that all people could feel like I do...that we are all cousins and there is only one world. Not different countries or cultures...just people working together for a better world. wiggle.gif

I love my country for everything its has done (apart from a few). I love the fact that nearly every invention was British, I just hate our government and seeing as i come from Manchesto (as it is said by a mancunian) i love the fact we started the industrial revolution

I dunno, you might have to include a timeline in this discussion. The Germans in the 40's were pretty darn patriotic! mellow.gif

"patriotism"...bah. The very idea implies seperatism among the people of the world. I love my country about as much as I love a burrito. Sure, it seems good and all...but it is relatively bad for you, too. My forefathers were slavedrivers, charlatans and elitist frauds.

If "patriotic" means "My country, right or wrong", (which, although it may not in this dicussion, it often does elsewhere), count me out.
MJB222
*Starts to sing "O Canada"*

I am also patriotic about my province. But which one am I in, Alberta or Saskatchewan? Oh yes, the mystery thickens. Muh-ha-ha-ha-ha *cough* ha!

How come people know of no one who has taken part in such surverys? I personally haven't come across anyone or haven't heard of anyone coming across anyone who has taken part in such surveys. Bah these surveys! mad.gif
They just take up some random samples; generalise the results for the entire population and come up with some ridiculous conclusions.
sairam_lfc
I'm proud to be an Indian. cool.gif

actually its hard to do such a survey..i mean India has a population of 1.2 billion..is it possible to ask each and every one them?
747400
I was trying to find out how they did research this, but the site it came from doesn't seem to go into details. I reckon they rang up 1000 people one evning right in the middle of their favorite TV program and asked them, "I wonder if you might have time for a survey?"

If someone did that to you, I expect you'd say "oh yes, i'm proud of my country and all that", just to get rid of them, wouldn't you? You wouldn't want to sit around for half an hour discussing what you think is wrong with it.
wunarmdscissor
proud of scotland

proud of britain

sera for the forseeable future scotland is and will be only a region in britain.

so being proud of scotland ergo being proud of britain as we make it up.

the reason im not surprised it wasnt added is that we are merely a nation not a with no international broders with england.

thats not to say that im against or for independance, cos i know fine well that being patriotic about scotland is different. but not definable in this context untill we go it alone.
wunarmdscissor
the reason why the british result looks actually quite low is that the home nations have very conflicting opinions of each other.

what people need tio understand if you asked the average welsh or scottish person in the street are you proud of being british they would by default associate it with being english and lets just say theres still a touch of rivalry lol.

its complicated.
