BERLIN (AFP) - Japan and its chief whaling ally Iceland attempted to circumvent a global moratorium on commercial whaling in the teeth of fierce resistance from opponents.

A Japanese bid to hunt 150 Bryde's whales a year was refused by 27 votes to 17 on the third day of the world whaling body's annual meeting here.

Another proposal for 150 minke whales a year was expected to meet the same fate later Wednesday.

Separately, Iceland was due to explain its arguments for deciding to resume whaling for scientific research.
