I understand if a mod-man shuts this down pretty soon, I was just wondering how other members felt about it. We had a light discussion over it in a thread.

Things like the Holocaust started with a few jokes. Believe it or not, this is true, I studied it for my history class. We see these so-called 'sexist' jokes as funny and harmless, but they are not funny or harmless when people get offended.

This doesn't stop me from telling them, though. On the other hand, they are only jokes, and I find jokes about men and women equally as funny. There are major differences between men and women, so they will never truly be equals. 'Sexist' jokes pick up on these differences, and exaggerate them, and yes, they are funny sometimes. The problem is, how do we know when to stop?

They're alright for a while, but there are too many of them.

It is getting old, and pretty soon I at least will be putting a stop to them since it's obvious certain members are getting offended.
Walken
I too have studied that course; in fact I got 100% on the test.

Thank you Burnside, that's appreciated.

I'm not looking in the direction of no sexist jokes at all, just to tone it down from the dozen or so a day we've been seeing recently.
Shivel
I voted "They're alright for a while, but there are too many of them."

I can take a joke, sure, but enough is definitely enough. All these girls are doing is repeating themselves over and over again about the stereotypical man who doesn't even exist. You had your laughs, so let's move on.
Walken
But there are anti-woman jokes too; admittedly no where near as many, but those two can be offensive.

I voted the same as you, Jay.

The same for the ones against girls. I don't actually care, as I am lucky enough to be able to laugh at the ones about women too.

I also voted the same as you, Jay.

It generally doesn't bother me and lord knows I have made my fair share of Male/Female jokes in my life. It does get annoying I guess when it's just constant, but I do enjoy them most of the time...besides I'm not easily offended by things so it just doesn't seem to bother me.

Anyway I voted "They're alright for a while, but there are too many of them." Just because jokes do get old with me really fast if they are over done. Eh whatever I don't really care.

With respect, I think you might take a look at the couple of pages before your comment to realize that it is inappropriate to speak for everyone, when so many are laughing. And btw, that is yet another reason we laugh at the male mentality. They dare to speak for all, when it's obvious they can only speak for themselves!

And btw, have you posted that observation on those many anti-women posts!?

Actually this poll is devoted to both; therefore I am speaking for both.

I'm not ready to get offended over anything just yet. They're intented as jokes, they aren't meant to hurt or insult anyone.

I think it's just getting blown way out of proportion right now.

Everyone has differences, most people shun these differences and conform .Doesnt the entire world preach about indiviuality... people must be themselves and not censor who and what they are. So if you are a man ..deal with it .. likewise for women ..and also for hemaphrodites.. anyway i digress........jokes that pick up on religion , sex, sexual preference, nationality, background, creed, color , and ethnicity.. are just jokes. Some people may become offended,, but you cant please everyone . As long as the jokes dont cause violence or prolonged anomosity towards the recipient,, they are harmless.. We have freedom of speech , lets use it ..not abuse it

He exists. And I've dated him. disgust.gif

Honestly, sounds like you're a good guy and have nothing to worry about. But you'd be surprised by the amount of men out there who think that this is the way a man should be. (Or woman, depending on the joke you're reading).

I grew up thinking I was abnormal. I didn't play sports, hated the taste of beer, could lose in a fight to a four year old girl...

...I think some of the reasons I am who I am is because I always felt like there was something wrong with me because I didn't fit into these boundrys.

These are the effects these jokes have.

If people are going to be offended by jokes, then why would they look in a thread clearly marked 'jokes'? the forum hosts a great diversity of opinion, quite rightly too, and i'm sure people could find stuff in 'Conspiracies and secret societies' or whatever that they not agree with. i'n not that bothered about jokes one way or the other, but freedom of speech (within legal limits, obviously) and diversity of opinion is what this forum's about ... in my opinion.

I really doubt that your self-esteem issues have to do with a few jokes aimed at males in general.
Shivel
I understand that these are just jokes, what offends me is just how many of them you display. It doesn't offend me because "some of these jokes are true" it offends me because the more you post these jokes, the more sexist it all is. I dont appreciate people thinking all men are how you describe, because most men aren't like that, if they were then there would be alot more single men out there.

I also understand that there are some women bashing threads on here too; I'm not saying they are right, but there are less of them. The less there are, the funnier it is, that's just how it seems to be.

There really WOULD be a lot more single men, wouldn't there.

And what does that tell you?

Tells me that we laugh at the stereotype. Chances are, we all have men in our lives. And more than likely, only a small handful would ever even come close to fitting into these stereotypes.

That's why they're jokes. They're meant to be funny. If they were all true, they wouldn't be funny for so long.

~sigh~ I think prople are just getting to bent out of shape about it.
It is the joke section, and they are jokes. Not ment to hurt anyones feelings.
They are not personal.
And as someone posted earlier about calling someone gay if they were indifferent to these jokes, its only ment to be funny. Gay men are more feminin and therefor more emotional. Thats all.
I personally am sorry if anything i have posted has offended or hurt anyone. Im not the type of person to try and hurt people.
But all and all, i laugh as the women's and the men's jokes and find them equally funny. I see no harm on them, myself.
brittish_gurl
My guy friends say sexist jokes all the time.... I think they're funny, but after a while it gets old

"Damn it woman! Make me a sandwich!" lol
Disinterested
Jokes are jokes, they aren't meant to hurt anyone. No jokes here have been in poor taste.

It seems as though the only ones who are genuinely hurt or offened by all this, are the ones who are being labeled as 'sexist'.

If you ask me, it's a term that's been thrown around the board much too loosely lately.
MichaelS
My only real problem is that how constant it is. I'm not a sexist person- in fact I hate stereotyping (having had it done myself). As a man working in a woman dominated office, I have do deal with frequent man-bashing, men-jokes, etc. I have had on occaison to tell the ladies that enough was enough- after all, I have the right- just like them, to a harassment free work environment.

If a thread had only one joke in it, or a few spaced out with replies between them, I don't think it would bother me so much. It's when in the first post, there's a whole schwack load of them... that's when it gets annoying to me.

In general, I think both genders are messed up in the head.
Disinterested
I think the 'they're okay but not when there's too many of them' argument to be ridiculous.

It's either offensive or it's not. I have a really hard time believing that after the 3rd joke you would be more offended then reading the first. Obviously it's offended you from the beginning, but you didn't choose to say anything until there were a few more.

If it bothers you all that much, don't read the jokes. It's really that simple. It's not like it's difficult to avoid gender-specific jokes.
GoddessWhispers
I respect your input Stewey. This thread was initiated by someone seeking to poll the members of this site on the subject of man/woman jokes. And while it has been noted a number of times, and contrary to Walkens assertions of a predominant "anti-men" jokes so as to support his alleged outrage, the humor posted is near equal number for both sexes. And the replies that attend them, on average, affirm the posters see the humor of it all.

What you will not see is Walken posting his "outrage of sexist content", in the jokes dedicated to women. (Why is a beer better than a woman, why is a gun better than.... etc...) If his outrage was sincere he would post in equal measure.
However it is impossible for Walken to continue to affirm his outrage in the platform of this polling in any case.

For you see Walken has proven himself to be not only a sexist, but a hypocritical sexist!
"Today will be my most anti-feminist day yet! The web site should be up and running soon and I'm archiving all of my out-going letters and emails and saving all of the articles I have on my favourites in case the web sites are taken down."
Walken posting May 21 2005, 07:02 PM

In point of fact, given this venting by Walken well before he initiated this poll eliciting support for his alleged "outrage", Walkens position is made null and void! And in that regard he has proven he is not just a hypocrite and a sexist in bold measure, seeking to create a board dedicated to an anti-woman theme, but that in that enterprise he is also a liar and a fraud! That's not flaming, that's reality! His own words speak for themselves as proof of that fact!

As to the poster that replied;
QUOTE
(sic) ..."Things like the Holocaust started with a few jokes. Believe it or not, this is true, I studied it for my history class."

That must have been one hell of a joke! hmm.gif And with respect to you Star Child, any history teacher that makes a claim like that, with regards to what initiated mass genocide, is not only sorely ignorant, but entirely unqualified to hold their post as someone entrusted to educate the future about the horrors of the past!
*MoG*
As a woman that works in the construction industry I am used to the odd sexist joke/jibe and it doesn't bother me in the least - I like them they are funny.

I don't like jokes that mock disabled or ill people, likewise I hate jokes that mock tradgedy.

I love dumb blonde jokes (I am one afterall - blonde that is) and if we can't laugh at ourselves who can we laugh at?

They are stereotypes not charactures

Michelle
That'a how I feel about it Mystic...my husband owns a welding business and I'm the only woman there. Everybody knows they can tell me women jokes all day long and I just fire men jokes right back.

If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. hmm.gif
MichaelS
Just so I'm not mis-understand, I'm not a big fan of women-bashing jokes either...
Disinterested
See, that's the thing. They aren't 'bashing' anyone, they're making jokes, not trying to be degrading to either gender.

Jokes, people. Laugh a little, you'll all live longer.

Exactly!!!
MichaelS
Sorry, but I've just been a victim of stereotyping too often to enjoy jokes that depict either gender as flawed simply because of their gender.

I had a girlfriend that used to stereotype guys. Ever time I didn't so a stereotypical "guy thing"- usually a negative trait, she got upset. When asked why I should act that way, she'd say, "You're a MAN, aren't you?"

And it's not just jokes- it's how men and women are portrayed in general- in magazines, books, movies, TV. I just have a intense dislike for things that say- "this is what a woman is", or "this is is what it means to be a man."

I have a very good sense of humour- as many of you know... I just have a dislike for stereotypes.
_Nyx_
IMO-I don't usually have any problem with sexist jokes. Most of the time, they are funny, and the way I see it, anything that can put a smile on my face is welcome. They can get tiresome after a while though, especially the cruder, more lewd ones. There's funny and then there's just plain "uncalled for". thumbsup.gif
747400
yes, there does sometimes tend to be the certain kind of comedian who'll start with 'my wife' and 'my wife's mother' kind of jokes, which i think are harmless enough, but will then go on to borderline (or even blatantly) racist, homophobic etc jokes. But on their own, i don't see any harm in jokes like 'Why women can't ...' or 'Why men are ...' .
XSAS

I have no problem with sexist jokes as long as they are funny and not distasteful as Lila mentioned, I like many of the female comedians that have a go at men, I find them funnier then the women jokes.
Walken
Okay, remember; you asked for this.

I beleive I have made clear what I stand for; but it;s the next quote where the fragging really begins.

Okay, you asked for this:

How ignorant are you? There is a fine difference between being anti-feminist and anti-woman. Either you're so arrogant that you'd try to convince otherwise to keep faith in your arguement, or so mentally impaired that you honestly beleive it. You can choose which, it doesn't matter to me.

Anti-feminism is hating feminism for it's double standards, hypocrisy, and out-right sexism on all fronteirs. Feminism is not about equal rights, which we have, but female empowerment, which we're approaching. I wish for equal rights; feminists do not. I am an anti-feminist Equaleterian. The quote is not only irrelavent, it is completley against you.

Seriously, grow up. Did you scout my posts looking for 'hypocrisy' or something? rolleyes.gif

Yeah, now you've done it. To call Walken a sexist is worse than calling Star_Child an animal-killer.

There is a clear difference between hating a birth group, such as woman, and hating a hate group, such as feminists. I hate the latter.

You're obviously some kind of moron that you could not tell the difference, so let me help you.

Feminism is 'FEM-inism'. Females. Female empowerment, not equal rights.

Ignoranous. Clearly you're forgetting that the holocaust begin with the Jewish being expelled and given no land of their own, being forced to wander and inhabit others lands. People began spreading jokes, and mild discrimination of the like, no differnt from modern racism jokes. The Nazi party picked up on this and used them as a scape goat for the problems, which led to the Holocaust. The final solution would not have come about if the Nazi Party hadn't have picked up on this.

Edit: Flaming.

Walken, and the rest of you, that's enough. As i said in the other topic, i'm closing these threads down. If you wish to continue your childish bickering, do so in PMs.
