hypocrite:
a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

So why do people say they are religious if they really aren't.

This is the worse thing in the world. If you are a Christian then stay one and if not don't pretend to be.

This is just self explanatory.

Tell me what yall think a hipocrit is and why?

Edit: Swearing is not allowed on the boards. Removed profanities.

it is derived from the conflict between the individual and the the society.

the individual desires to be respected, liked, thought fondly of, etc within society so he/she will act in such a way as to obtain such status.

on the private side though, the individual is driven by personal wants and needs. these needs often come into conflict with the desired public face.

So really, you're saying I can't have my own set of beliefs? See, I believe in God and Jesus; heaven and hell, but I don't follow their religion, I don't consider myself a Catholic or Christian.. It doesn't make me a hypocrite.
SilverCougar
Just makes you someone who believes in god and jesus.. heaven and hell...
BurnSide
Hrmm, i've never heard of anyone saying they're a christian when they're not or vice versa.
Generally, one dislikes the other. laugh.gif

Yeah... well there he believes it.... he just doesn't want to be put under the relgion, and live his life that way..... it doesn't mean he can't believe. We believe in ghosts, but we aren't committed to them....... no.gif

i have heard of it for personal gain. in a "christian society" sometimes it is/was necessary to fake being of the "norm" to gain the desired outcome. these people would be "christian" in name only.
BurnSide
Ahh, good point. In that case, i may have heard of a few instances.

Who am I to tell you what you are when you believe what you want. If you wanna call it christianity.. go for it.. if you want to not be labled.. then hey have fun.

RH2097
If that is the case then, who are you to label someone as a hypocrite, when they are confused over their own beliefs?

And society would label them, it's what society does.
brittish_gurl
It's also amazing on how we're all hypocrites in our own special way.... but now we're being hyocritical about talking about hypocritical people.....confusing but true....

I can be a hypcrite sometimes too, i'll admit, but I try to correct it later......being a hypocrite can also mean that you're learning.....

As logical as you hoped that would be.. there's a difference between a hypocrite and a religion (though some people would like to dissagree)

Saying you don't want to be called a Christian, yet you worship exactly what is the core of that religion is personal choice.

But, it won't cause harm.

Being a Hypocrite can cause harm, and offend many many people as well as get you into serious trouble....

QUOTE
"What makes it so plausible to assume that hypocrisy is the vice of vices is that integrity can indeed exist under the cover of all other vices except this one. Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confront us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core."
Hannah Arendt (German born American philosopher and political scientist. 1906-1975)

I think there are hypocrites because people believe it is necessary to affirm an absolute(s) philosophy or creed, so as to live their life appearing as if they are in accord and yet unique within the community of "civilized" society. In truth people change, evolve if you will, as do their opinions . Those that espouse an absolute platform, while claiming others as unworthy peers, set themselves upon an tenuous path destined to have proven their true profile as liars, egoists, and rogues.
It has been my experience that anyone who claims to hold absolute fundamentalist values, shall ultimately prove themselves to be a hypocrite.

A hypocrite is not someone who is confused about their beliefs, they know what they believe, but they pretend to follow a given faith. They use it to try show they are better than everybody else.

My brother is a hypocrite. This is why; when his kids are at the dinner table he says grace, when they are not there he does not.
He never lets me say grace, because he knows I will include the Goddess. I think it is funny. rofl.gif

That's not being a hypocrite...that's him doing what he believes will set a good example to his kids. In his own way, he's trying to be a good parent...I take it that means you believe an adult who swears in conversation with adults, but doesn't around children, is a hypocrite? Or a person who smokes in private, but doesn't when other people are around is a hypocrite?

Please...
Mr Ed
You are right Sera, but I am just trying to clarify something in my mind.
If her brother had always told his kids to do grace and that they must never forget, but then did not do it himself. This is hypocritical?
101
Every man alone is sincere. At the entrance of a second person, hypocrisy begins. We parry and fend the approach of our fellow-man by compliments, by gossip, by amusements, by affairs. We cover up our thought from him under a hundred folds. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Friendship," Essays, 1841

Main Entry: hyp·o·crite
Pronunciation: 'hi-p&-"krit
Function: noun

: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion

My brother only says grace is front of the kids and company, except me as I am just a lowly Pagan and there is no need to impress me. I have seen other christians say grace in privite with no one around. They must feel the need to thank their creater not impress others. My brother does it to impress others , therefore my brother is a hypocrite.

I am sorry your brother is. crying.gif But as for you continue praying to your goddess and you won't be one. I think it is just sad he can't respect the fact that you pray..just to another deity. no.gif

Absolutely correct thumbsup.gif

Each of us engages in hypocrisy from time to time. It's a human condition, not just limited to religious people.

How can a person that does not believe in religion of any kind be a hypocrite?
theoric
@zandore:
it does not take a religion of a faith to be a hypocrite. all it takes is "saying one thing and doing another".

Mr Ed
Easily. If I said to my brother, 'Don't ever burp, it is disgusting and I don't even do it alone.', then he came in just as I had burped, he would be entitled to call me a hypocrite.

When you first told that story, you mentioned that he never allows you to do it, because you'd probably thank the goddess/s....am I then to assume that, usually, you would do so in your own home?

Does that make you a hypocrite, for not doing so elsewhere?

My favorite hypocrisy is when someone forces their beliefs on others but becomes hostile when someone tries to open said person's mind.....laughable.

Well I live by the same standards I post on this board, and they may be out there, but that's why I love them tongue.gif I don't care what anyone thinks about it. I wear both a cross and a Star of David, and am currently getting a large Angelic Script (like on my sig) of white gold and diamonds to wear so I make it quite clear what I believe, and if you have a problem with it you can kiss my ass. tongue.gif I have a mixed Judeo-Christian belief system, so, I'm sure many people here don't agree with me, but it doesn't bother me, I feel comfortable with it, and have researched it enough to know they are all from the same roots.

Now, about people being hypocritical in their beliefs, yes, I know a few. Most are Born Again Christians.

I dunno about that, me dear Scottish great grandmother smoked like a chimney and took a "wee drappie" of whiskey (to her only Scotch was whiskey, all others were called by name i.e. Rye, etc) every evening - the old gal died at the age of 97! But then us Scots have always been a hardy lot! wink2.gif

okay one might say smoking is bad but I think it is what you believe. I don't think me smoking a cig is going to send me to Hell.

Others may think that but poo on them

Ashley-Star*Child
LOL 'ahh smoking will send you to hell!!!' 'Here want me to light the fire?' LOL

I love smoking, it's ben around since the beginning of time, if God HAD a real problem with it (or the green tobacco substite also freely smoked and enjoyed since the beginning of all time....grass anyone? lol) it would specifically say 'Thou shalt not light up tobacco or marijuana and smoke it'. It's some select peopl who have a problem with smoking, not God. LOL You know, God breathes and eats fire? I doubt smoking bothers Him too much! Eh, smoke up people! LOL
Darkwind
Well, smoking might not send you to hell, but you will get to were ever you are going a lot faster, the greenstuff included. devil.gif I miss that smoking devil they use to have. >:)/
