Full Version: The story of Eli and Cie

Shaftsbury
Once upon a time there were two children Eli and Cie, who lived in a large house at the end of the street.

One day while playing in the attic Cie found a couple of puzzle pieces laying on the floor, they were very old and dirty and he could not imagine what puzzle they were from. As he looked around, more and more pieces of the puzzle came into view. "I'm going to put these pieces together and see what puzzle they make" he exclaimed.

"I know what picture those pieces make!" said Eli "don't waste your time". And spotting an old box in the corner he wiped off the dust and thrust it in Cie's face. "See!" Eli said "It's a cat, anybody can see that!". "I'm not so sure" said Cie, and he continued to gather more pieces and try and fit them together.

At first it was difficult to fit the pieces together, and Eli took every opportunity to criticize Cie and to try and persuade him not to finish the puzzle. But as more and more of the pieces fit together, and it started to become clear that the picture evolving did not look quite like the box cover, and Eli became increasingly angrier.

Eventually he began to accuse Cie of cheating, and reworking the pieces so that they would fit together better, but Cie repliied "why would I want to change the pieces? I find more and more of them every day, and although some of them don't fit in at the moment, once I have enough of them I'm sure it will become clear where they belong".

The story of Eli and Cie really has no ending, Cie may never find all the pieces to his puzzle but is he wrong for trying to put it together? Should he automatically believe Eli just because of the box cover? There is no evidence to show that the puzzle pieces ever came from that old box, perhaps they never did?

The question is..............in my little story here do you trust more in Religion or Science?

indeed, do not let yourseft be deceived by false images.

unfortuantely, so many would rather take comfort in a completed false image than a partial true image. to them, the completeness is more important than the validity.
Mr Ed
Science. I believe religion was more important when we had very few answers. We now have the means to get more answers, science is becoming the new religion. We trust it and we know it is there- much more reliable than religion, it does have its benefits though.

I love the story...

Both religion and science.. I piece them together somewhat .. But it is something everyone has to decide. Whether or not they just want to believe the Earth is flat or if there is a God... We need them both.

Mr Ed
I Do not think we need them both. We certainly need science and some people need religion, but not everyone. Religion created laws in a time when there were few, it gave people hope and answers. Science now gives the answers and we live in a law filled society. I believe that religion has carried out it's main purpose. It can give us no more answers.
However, it is useful when looking at its positve aspects, putting aside the fact it is the reason for most of the human killing human acts on this planet.

@ Mr Ed... Hey

Well the fact that both religion and science are used for many purposes is why we need them both.. I mean just because the Bible is written doesn't mean God doesn't speak to other men to write books about spiritual warfare, the tribulation, mark of the beast, angels, and so on. It is needed just as much as science. grin2.gif

If you say so...grin2.gif

religion is the of the lowest frequency of all cycles with humanity.

religion cycles over 1000's of years. it provides the stability of socio-cultural constucts.

it exists because it is truly represents a part of the humanity.

you can not deny what you are, even if you can deny how you represent it.

as man's socio-cultural constructs evolve, so does the religion that holds it together. the religions of today will pass as have all others. what the next one will be, who knows. it must not be science though, for science needs to change and adapt to function. science must run at a higher frequency. science must not become an istitution, even though it already has in many ways, sadly.

Yes I did actually.

What I wanted to show was that some people are born scientists, and don't need to see the big picture in order to justify something.

I also wanted to show that just because somebody may not believe in somebody elses conclusion, the mere fact that they try to gather their own evidence doesn't necessarily mean that they have a hidden agenda, they may just like doing puzzles. thumbsup.gif

That was a very good analog
