A sideways view of hills (granules) and valleys near the edge of the Sun. This image, made by the Swedish Solar Telescope, highlights the three-dimensional nature of the solar surface when seen at a low angle. Note the many bright bits of faculae on the walls of granules. The actual image is in black and white; it has been colorized here to emphasize contrasts.

Your point being? huh.gif

im soo curious to see what it looks like.. but ur pic dosent work. can you fix it?
Walken
That picture is broken. Any chance you could link us to the web site containing it?
Janiel
Hrm, the picture looks fine to me.

I'll upload it so you can see it.

It's really an interesting perspective, but to me it just looks like cooling magma or something of that sort. I don't think a star can have hills and valleys, can it? huh.gif

alien.gif Nice picture, but it could be a close up of a 4 egg omelet also. I assume the bubbles are domes of minerals that are cooler than the hotter ionized gas?

Looks like a nasty skin disease. wacko.gif

Ya, it looks like some sort of a volcano lava. Maybe we need to see the big picture original.gif

Sometimes parts of the suns surface gets a few degrees cooler than the rest. When that happens, those spots appear darker because they are not burning as brightly. These are called sun spots and can happen on a smaller scale than just a huge spot area. That is all you are seeing. The sun is not cooling and there is no solid surfaces on the sun either.

Your point/question above is so vogue I am just assuming what you are pointing out. Please let me know if I am way off track with what you are trying to point out.

well, i don't really think that those are sun spots, don't get me wrong, they could be, i just don't think they are, if anything it looks like shadows but i don't know if their are shadows on the sun (are there? unsure.gif )

No. Those ARE sun spots. I've been studying astronomy and the sun for 12 years and if it looked like something out of place, I would be the first person to step up and back you on it. But I know what a sunspot looks like and those are just cooler areas on the surface of the sun.

You cannot get shadows on the surface of the sun when it is the brightest thing in our solar system.
