I got this idea from reading the posts in the Resident Evil thread, basically do you find it ok to cheat in games, when is it ok to cheat if at all? are some cheats ok and some not? etc etc

personally i find it ok to cheat, i mean video games are supposed to be fun right? so if cheating makes the game more fun why not? and take for instance games where all you care about is the story....ive never actually done it because most of the time i cant be bothered looking up cheats but personally while playing silent hill or resident evil i dont care about the survival part, i just want to unravel the story and haveing infinite life and/or ammo to me would make no difference

there are some games where cheating is flat out stupid like fighting games...the whole point of the fighting game is to challenge your skills, same for racing games

so what about you guys?

Baaaah!
Good thread topic.
But, cheating, BAH.
jpalz
It depends. I would use a cheat as a VERY last resort, but otherwise, I would just try to beat it myself original.gif
MonkeyMan
Cheating is a personal choice, so it's up to the person. Much like a drug.
Shakezulah
The only time i would use Inf health in a game is to get past a part that i absolutely cannot beat. However, i like to use fun cheats like for bonus weapons or special things. Its fun, but whenever i seriously play a game, i never use cheats.
TaintedDoughnuts
if the game's absolutely hard enough, such as megaman zero 3(finally beat this damn agme last weekend- yay!), then ill try to improve my skills to get past the obstacles. if it's still not possible, such as those geeks who play CS all day long just to raise their server scores, then ill use a discreet cheat(read: hack) or two. if i wanna bug the daylights out of them, ill use annoying hacks, such as noclip, super speed, etc. no harm done, just getting a couple "OMG!!!1 %^$#@ THIS HACKER!!! GO TO HELL YOU PIECE OF *&@%!!!1Q" grin2.gif so, IMO, yes its ok to cheat if the time calls for it. thumbsup.gif

Edit: Removed profanities.
Walken
Depends what the cheat is.

Like on GTA:SA, I use the mega punch and addrenaline cheat because they're very funny.

But skip level cheats are boring and lame.
Fox Lupine
On the contrary- I think when you've beaten a game once, and without cheats, you should be able to play through again using cheats- but not unless you can do it without! grin2.gif
jpalz
If I wanna leave a mess in San Andreas, then I turn on a cheat for weapons grin2.gif

I have been waiting for this game to come out on XBOX^^^

It's a large piece of hardware. It will do that. You probably dislodged several connections inside.

Anyway, the Xbox version of GTA:SA will be much better than the PS2 version. Sorry guys, including myself. It'll have many new features and weapons, as well as much better graphics.

*shrugs*

Back to topic. I feel if you need to use a cheat to beat a game, you're not even worth the time.
But, i guess if you feel the need to use a cheat to alter the game a certain way to make it more fun for yourself after having played it over several times and gotten bored with it, all the power to you.
AztecInca
I will only ever uses cheats once I have finished the game, so I can just muck around and have even more fun. Cheats deafet the purpose of the game I believe.

I agree with the having completed it, as you said, but I think you're going a bit far there- YOU'RE NOT WORTH THE TIME- how does it hurt anyone else? Naturally keep the cheats off of onlinem or 2 player games, but how, Burnside?
seeking
cheats can actually help you get better at the game so in the future you will no longer need them, take for instance infinite ammo, you can now focus more on developing your aiming skills so when the ammo actually counts you wont waste it
Super Pancake
I keep it old school so I use cheats almost all the time after I complete a game, I think they are fun to use, especially invisibility and all weapons cheats.

"Game are created by a creator"leader".Cheat code is also created by the creator."

If the creator do not create the cheat code.Where got the cheat code exist innocent.gif

So follow the leader. He love it just follow him or her who create the game.

Creator is always right tongue.gif tongue.gif

By the way many game u need cheat code to unlock some special state, characters and ending.

"So let's Cheat together as the Creator is always right." grin2.gif
seeking
not all cheats are from the creator, some cheats are hacks, like gameshark where it alters the games hex code

Cheating is OK, but only if you have attempted to complete whatever it is cheat-free. Starting a game from the start with cheats is just a waste of time. But cheating in multi-player games AKA hacking is absurd and those who do it shall have their hands removed by blunt objects. yes.gif

Games are supposed to be challenging, but yet entertaining. Cheating should only be used when the challenge level is at it's peak, and the entertainment level is at it's lowest point. But if you beat that same situation cheat-free. May you be treated as a King. grin2.gif All of that applies to Non-multiplayer games.
Paranoid Android
It really depends on what you're playing the game for. If you want to simply pass the game, then what fun is there using a cheat. But if you want to do other things, then that's what the cheats are for.

I'm showing my age here, but I remember when I was playing Quake 1 and you could put on all these cheats. There were parts of the game which you could only access using the cheat functions - my personal favourite was the monster room filled with dozens of Shamblers which are used ultimately in the gibbet fireworks display at the end of the level.
Boff
Beat the game honestly, then cheat. Thats what I do.
turbonium
Damn - I thought this was gonna be about real cheating! Didn't notice what the forum section was about laugh.gif
SpiderOfDoom
When a player cheats in a game, they are choosing a battlefield that is broader in context than the game itself. Games are made like puzzles, just like everyday life. When you cheat in a game, you are denying the ability to think, and that will get you nowhere in actual life...

Unless you have already beaten it without cheating, then i guess it doesnt really matter... Unless you are like me, cheats just make it boring sleepy.gif
Seraphina
For multiplayer or online games, certainly not. I got fed up playing local vaults in NWN because of all the hackers running around with invulnerable characters. "Oh, lookit me! I have an armour class of six thousand, and ten million HP!"

Sad really...

On the other hand, for single player games, I think it's up to the person. Games are for recreation, they're not meant to be taken seriously...if a person has more fun playing a game with cheats, so what?

I think thats a very extreme point of view. Your not superior to someone just because you play the game fairly. huh.gif

Games are for fun, if someone wants to use a code to get all the possible weapons in GTA then go on a rampage its up to them, if they want to use a code to get all the magic in FF8 so they don't have to bother wasting time on Draw its up to them, if they want to give themselves a + 10 weapon in Neverwinter Nights its up to them. Your claim they're not worth your time is rather rude and insulting when its none of your buisiness, and its rather sad you have that view as it shows you take video games way more seriously than they are supposed to be taken.
The only time cheating can be seen as wrong is in the event its a multiplayer player game where there is an element of competition/sport to the game as well as fun, and cheating can affect other people.
Megalomania
Cheating in MMOGs is bad,
But otherwise, you're only cheating yourself,

You're getting a quatre of the fun you would if you do it the right way anyway.
It's really a waste of money if you're having no fun too...
Garm
I can use cheats if i want to do something special, like see the end video or if i've played the game and finished it without cheating, i'll do it just for fun. NEVER on internet or LAN games though.

It's way more fulfilling to finish without cheating, but it's sad when people accuse you of cheating just because you are good. I used to play Unreal Tournament a LOT, and i got darn good at it. So good i was ranked #59 in the world on the official stats. On every darn public map i played there was always someone who Yelled "AIMBOT.. f*ckin cheater"
Skuzzlebutt
I dont use cheats at all. I learn more and sharpen my skills playing with no help..... On multiplayer servers I hate cheaters and hacks...they have no skills and cant kill with out any help.... I play Call of Duty.....No skill in using wall hacks and aimbots....... You are a sorry player if you have to use hacks!!!!!

Cheating takes the fun out of the game....you know you cant die.... run out of ammo...ect...... So why play then....
iac_tracker
i would not compare cheating to drugs
i believe that if cheating in a game helps it's overall potential it is good and if you game illiterate like me you need cheats some times

Ok, I use cheats when I get stuck. That happens a lot, I am not great at games but I like them. I also use them for fun, Like GTA..and my kids get stuck on their games and need hints. And they love to drive on water on GTA and do other hilarious things. Also cheats for the sims are fun and keep kids occupied as they dont run out of money. Anyway, I dont see the harm in it.
Elthrad
I only really use cheats if theres a glitch in the game that causes it to crash, or do some other random thing. I also use cheats once I've played the game through or i want to try something different.
seeking
i must say i only play the sims with infinite money, its the only way to make it fun
Skuzzlebutt
I went on this server today.... a clan server... I like their maps.. anyway I get wallhacked immediately... So I say 'Nice hack.... all the clan members attack me and threaten to ban me off their server...
Now they are hacking... not me and im a threat????
Cheaters and Hacks are paranoid, no skill crybabies!!!!

Its hard these days to get on a server that all the people are playing honestly...with no hacks... what fun is it if you never die....or kill everything with 1 shot from like 1000 meters all the time???? Not fun for me..... no.gif
jpalz
If I wanna make a good masacre in GTA, why not use a cheat for all weapons?
NJC
hehehe i use cheats all the time when i play my xbox games(bang i'm unstopable)
wrighty
cheating is good on cetain games and ruins it on others but i say CHEAT CHEAT CHEAT CHEAT CHEAT
cryptosporidium137
I like to use cheats. Take, for instance, Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition. Entering the code dfns will make cars fly 50 feet and slam into others when you hit them. That is my favorite code to use.
cryptosporidium137
Another fun cheat is in Spider-man 2 for PSP. The code WARPULON will unlock all levels, and now my memory stick reads it as a beaten game.

But people PLEASE be careful using most codes. Some are permernat, like making the subtitles of that charecter in Psyconauts that talks to plants or whatever all weird like this weird: I @* #^ ><> ? "": !~` () ^>< @ $u63r and you wont be able to remove the code.
Byuu94
Some codes let you see stuff you normally can't, like the island behind the dam in Goldeneye. So those are always neat to fool around with.
I've very rarely cheated to beat a game, only twice. I do like to fool around with cheat when i've finished everything though. Debug codes are the best. thumbsup.gif

DUDE! have anyone saw the Matrix?

tat movie is WICKED AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111
I can't believe it. is the best movie. i think tat if you're a hacker, you should use your talents. if you not, then stay who you are.
rickfury188
I think it's ok to cheat sometimes when it makes the game more fun. I mean I beat GTA3 without cheats, but when I got San Andreas it's kinda fun to be able to get a rocket launcher and use it when you want to. I think it's dumb in the game how you're supposed to be a "gangsta", yet all you have to start out with is like a pistol with like 20 shots. I believe that if you really wanna take over the "hood" you'd use crazy weapons.
Also it's cool to use cheats after you beat a game. thumbsup.gif
The Cheat
i think using cheats is dumb if you're playing a game for the first time... takes the challange and the point out of it. But if you've already beaten it, and now you're just playin for fun, go for it

cheating online = bad.

sweet_butterfly
I play the game if I can't go any farther (stuck) I'll either buy the book or get the cheats (gameshark) it's easier with the heavy guns thumbsup.gif
I've played resident evil (all) and silent hill think those are my favorites tongue.gif
count_d
what about faqs like for morrowind.
its impossible to beat 100% without it.
well not impossible but still.
Euphoric Deception
I would suggest cheating all you want after you completely beat the game. I've learned my mistake from cheating in a video game, first you have a lot of fun cheating, then you get bored, try to get back to the game, and it got boring too because you've experienced your characters limits already. (or whatever).

I guess it depends on if you're a gamer or not. tongue.gif
Skuzzlebutt
I cant believe how many people hack now a days... I play Call of Duty on-line and I cant goto 1 server wothout it being infested with hackers..... it is so obvious too... I know all about bots and the chams and wall hacks...dosent anyone play fair anymore and like a challenge??? It is too easy to use a cham hack and see where your enemy is...so where is the skill and fun in that????? Come on hackers get real...get a life!!!!!!!!!! no.gif
StalingradK
Yeah I think the $Banke$ Clan all hacks too, I mean using 3 shots with an Thompson on Auto and killing your enemy everytime is just bull... But then again I am godly with a Kar98 original.gif I seriously can kill anyone with a headshot usually on the first attempt to kill them and I don't hack, hacks are for losers

I agree..... well all clans hack...my friend is in a clan...he told me if he didnt hack and his clan they would lose every match... I know what you mean with the weapon...getting killed by 1 shot from a pistol or M40 at 1000 meters is bulls@#t!!!

I was on a server today, stayed behind a wall and kept leaning to my right and taking shots... I could hear the bullets from the hacks flying by me...but they couldnt get me behind the wall...dumbasses!!!! I was 17-2 at the end..HAHA!!! Stupid hacks...you might have been able to see me with your cham hack...but couldnt shoot through ther wall!!!!! HAHA too bad!!!!!! grin2.gif
